Cyn opsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 1, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Would you believe? …  An Oscar winner on Sunday night and now Alan Arkin is going to be the Chief of Control in a movie adaptation of the TV spy spoof Get Smart.  The Warner Bros. movie will star Steve Carell as Maxwell Smart (aka Agent 86), and he will also serve as an Executive Producer on the project, which will be directed by Peter Segal.  Arkin and Carell, who appeared in Little Miss Sunshine together, as the Chief and Smart is a stroke of casting genius for the movie version of Get Smart.  However, I still have to be convinced about casting Anne Hathaway as Agent 99.  That said, hard as it was to cast the Chief and Max, it is going to be hard to cast someone other than Bernie Kopell as Siegfried, but I bet Dick Gautier could still play Hymie again.  Get Smart is up there as one of the funniest shows ever – how can you go wrong with a show created and written by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry?

Nickelodeon and Minnesota’s Mall of America have entered into a multi-year deal under which Nick will take over the mall’s seven-acre amusement park.  The terms of the deal were not released.  Slated to open in spring 2008, the Nickelodeon theme park, which does not have an official name as of yet, will feature Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. properties and characters, rides, interactive activities, games, costumed characters, and themed eateries that will offer healthy food options, as well as a 4,000 square-foot Nick retail store.  As for new rides, a roller coaster (an upside down one) based on the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender is currently in development.  Nickelodeon takes over the park that had, until January 2006, been the home of Camp Snoopy, a Peanuts themed park that opened with MOA 15-years-ago.  Moving forward the park and existing attractions and rides will remain open while the new park is designed and constructed.  All of this comes as MOA continues to plan a 5.6 million-square-foot expansion, practically doubling its current size.  According to the Associated Press the expansion will carry a price tag of $1.9 billion and MOA will be requesting $234 million in state and local subsidies.

Sony Pictures Consumer Products has announced its new line-up of licensees to support Columbia Pictures’ upcoming animated feature film, Surf’s Up, scheduled for release in the US on June 8, 2007.  Directed by Ash Brannon (Toy Story 2) and Chris Buck (Tarzan), Surf’s Up revolves around the world of competitive penguin surfing and Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LaBeouf), a Rockhopper penguin and up-and-coming surfer, as he enters his first pro competition.  Also lending their voices to characters in the movie are Jeff Bridges, Zooey Deschanel, James Woods, Jon Heder, Diedrich Bader and Mario Cantone.  US licensees include:
