Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 19, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Ellen DeGeneres takes on a mother of a role  as she signs on to play Mother Nature in a new comedy produced by Walden Media.  Based on an original concept, DeGeneres’ Mother Nature returns to earth for the first time since the planet’s creation.  The movie is being penned by Jenny Bicks.  The movie is on the fast track with the goal of production taking place this summer in LA during DeGeneres’ hiatus from her talk show.



Disney XD will host Disney XD For Real: Aaron Stone Edition, an Aaron Stone marathon including an on-air and online trivia component, Friday, March 27 from 7p.  Six Disney XD avatars will present behind-the-scenes footage and trivia about the series’ special effects, the cast’s martial arts training and gamer jargon.  Viewers can also log onto to view an encore presentation of event (from 8p) as well as take a quiz for a chance to earn online rewards. Additionally, fans can also create a 3D avatar of themselves. By playing games and completing special challenges, fans will be able to collect exclusive items to transform their avatars.

PBS Kids Go! expands its video player capabilities to include new in-video gaming on In video games designed to foster learning comprehension among the site’s targeted 6-8 demo have been added to shows such as Arthur, Fetch! With Ruff Ruffman and Wordgirl.  The Electric Company and other series will feature the new gaming option soon.

Big Fish Games launches its new virtual world, Faunasphere, into beta mode, according to  Developed by Thinglefin, which Big Fish acquired in 2007, and aimed at all ages, Faunasphere gamers adopt and nurture animal characters.  While an official launch date for the world has not been announced, the game will be free to play and will also offer paid membership levels and micro-payments.

Noted English actor James Bolam is set to reprise his role in the second season (26 episodes) of the preschool series Grandpa In My Pocket from Adastra, which was recently re-commissioned by CBeebies

Decode Enterprises is headed to Cannes where it will offer a slate of programming, including new properties, at MIPTV:

  • How to be Indie (26×30)  a new tween targeted live-action created and produced by Heroic Film Company for YTV (Canada)
  • Side Show Christmas (1×60) – an animated holiday special with a modern twist, produced by Cheshire Smile and Studio B Productions for Teletoon (Canada).
  • In the preschool arena, new offerings include Mighty Jungle (46×11), the puppet series from Halifax Films, and Poppet’s Town (26×30, 52×11) a series co-produced by Neptuno, Decode Entertainment and OLC, and Grandpa in My Pocket, produced by Adastra Creative for CBeebies (UK).
  • Decode will also showcase new episodes of Franny’s Feet and Bo on the Go!

Starz Media will offer a range of content at MIPTV including kid/family-targeted original and acquired film titles and TV series such as:

  • The Dog Who Saved Christmas a new movie that revolves around Zeus, a new not-so-dependable family dog (a yellow Lab), who becomes a hero when he goes up against two burglars when the family is away.  The movie stars Dean Cain, Elisa Donovan, Gary Valentine, Mindy Sterling and Adrienne Barbeau.
  • The Legend of Secret Pass  a CGI animated movie about a boy (voiced by Frankie Muniz) who lives with his grandfather high in the mountains and the trial he must go through.  The voice cast for the movie also features Joe Pantoliano, Graham Greene, Christy Carlson Romany, Cheryl Hines, Ron Perlman, David Cross, and Michael Chicklis among many others.
  • Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!  Currently in its second season the series airs on Nick Jr. in the US.


Indie French producer Moi j’aime la television (MJTV) establishes an in-house licensing division and has names Alexandre Mayaud as consultant.  Mayaud’s initial focus will be the brand extension of MJTV’s kid-targeted series Genie in the House.  Currently in post-production on season three (for a total of 78 episodes), MJTV co-produces Genie in the House with Helion Pictures for Nickelodeon UK and Canal J (France).  Mayaud currently runs his own consultancy Alternative Branding.

HarperCollins acquires the worldwide tie-in publishing rights for the CBeebies TV (UK) series Big & Small.  The preschool-targeted series debuted on CBeebies in October 2008.  Launching in fall 2009, the Big & Small publishing program will include storybooks, sing-a-long books, coloring, activity and sticker books.


IGN Entertainment appoints Chris Ellis as SVP and MD/International.  In this newly created role, Ellis will be responsible for all non-US operations across IGN Entertainment including, Rotten Tomatoes, AskMen and other IGN sites.  Prior to this, Ellis developed commercial operations for MySpace across Europe.  He will report to Roy Bahat, GM/IGN Entertainment.

Echo Bridge Entertainment names Melissa Caron to the new position of VP/International Sales, Europe.  Caron, who takes on her new role at MIPTV, will manage programming sales (including Degrassi, The Next Generation) across all platforms throughout Europe with a focus on Spain, France, French-speaking Belgium and Portugal.  Caron has been with BBC Worldwide for the last 15-years, most recently as Director/Developed Territories, EMEIA.  She also served as an associate producer for the movie Earth, which will be released in the US this year, and was developed in conjunction with the Planet Earth TV series.

Toy Industry Association, Inc. (TIA) appoints Michael T. Perkins as Technical Outreach Director for TIA’s new Toy Safety Certification Program (TSCP).  Perkins will implement an outreach, education and training plan that will introduce factory auditors, toy testers, and companies and retailers of all sizes to the TSCP.  A 30-year veteran of the toy/hobby/craft industries, most recently, Perkins served as VP/Operations, Cadaco.
