Cynopsis: Kids!
3/15/07
Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 15, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
It has been a difficult week for the BBC with unrelated problems with its long-running kids series, Blue Peter and its educational broadband service BBC jam.
- Following a review of an on-air contest held in November 2006, the BBC and the Blue Peter producers have apologized, and the show’s hosts did so directly to viewers on air, for faking the outcome of that contest. Here’s what happened. The program was running a live phone-in contest, viewers called-in to enter, being charged for each call, a portion of each call went to charity; the BBC making no profit. Though the calls were apparently received correctly by the phone company, due to a “technical failure” the production wasn’t receiving the calls properly. The winner chosen therefore was not from a call-in, but rather a kids in the studio who was asked to call in had won. As a follow-up the BBC has randomly selected a winner from the original contest entrants, which was done under the supervision of an independent party. Additionally, a review of the rules and regulations for conducting live competitions on CBBC TV and editorial control in live studios is underway, and moving forward staff will be educated on these rules and issues.
- And if that wasn’t enough, after receiving complaints from the commercial industry to the European Commission that BBC jam was hurting business, the BBC will suspend the service as of March 20. The year old educational broadband service is targeted to Kids/teens 5-16 and features free curriculum-based activities, video games, audio and animation content to help kids to learn, do their homework and the like. The service also had a goal of encouraging parents to get more involved in their kid’s education.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Italian actor/director Sergio Castellitto has joined the cast of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian; he will play King Miraz.
Since it was published some 13-years-ago Lois Lowry’s wonderful young-adult novel, The Giver, has been in ongoing movie development. Now Warner Bros. has picked up the movie rights to The Giver, according to Variety. Red Wagon’s partners Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher will produce the Giver. If you have never read The Giver you got to it is about a boy (12) who chosen to record the history of his futuristic, utopian society where emotion is not acceptable. Most recently, the movie rights had been optioned by Fox and Walden Media.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Teletoon will add Chaotic, the animated series from 4Kids Entertainment, to its lineup this weekend. Chaotic makes its Canadian debut first with a sneak peek Friday, March 16 at 5:30p, and on March 18 the show will settle into its regular time on Sundays at 8:30a. A trading card game based on the game featured in the series will be released in both the US and Canada, beginning with starter decks that will be available from May 16.
Toronto’s Astral Media has launched a new Astral Television Networks unit to grow and centralize its licensing, merchandising, online advertising and promotional sponsorships activities for The Movie Network, Viewers Choice and Family Channel English-language TV networks. The new Astral Media Integrated Solutions has already signed a licensing and merchandising agreement for Zoey 101, which airs on Family Channel, with retailer La Senza Girl. As for sponsorships, the division will look into opportunities for The Movie Network’s Movie Style interstitial fashion/beauty series, Family Channel’s Spring Break Out Mall Tour, and more.
TuTv‘s Telehit, a Latino youth-targeted entertainment/music channel, has added Canal E to its programming lineup. The new social content forum show was created by the network to spotlight current issues that affect young Latinos in Latin America, the US and Europe. Gabriela Warkentin, a communications scholar, and Waratxe, a young activist, host the forum, touching on subjects such as Spanglish, global warming, and more. Its format will include roundtable discussions, college students’ own video clips, and an up-and-coming talent-hosted segment titled “Cineminutos” (Movie Minutes). Canal E airs Saturdays at 1p.
Nickelodeon’s 20th Annual Kids Choice Awards will feature musical performance by Gwen Stefani and Akon. Hosted this year by Justin Timberlake, the show will air live Saturday, March 31 at 8p (tape delay PT) from UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion. The line-up of celebrities slated to appear on the annual honors includes, Beyonce, Jessica Alba, Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Queen Latifah, Mike Myers, Jamie Lynn Spears, Hilary Duff, George Lopez, Jon Heder, Chris Evans, Ice Cube, Drake Bell, Emma Roberts, Jesse McCartney, Nelly, Ciara, Zac Efron, Shia LaBeouf, Hayden Panetierre, Masi Oka, Ty Pennington, Tyler James Williams, Nat Wolff, Alex Wolff, Devon Werkheiser, Lil’ JJ, Chris Brown and Ryan Sheckler among others.
NCircle Entertainment has entered into a new exclusive three-year DVD and digital format distribution deal with Thomas Nelson, a provider of Christian content. Under the terms of the agreement, NCircle will hold the US and Canadian rights to the current 8 and future titles to Thomas Nelson’s Hermie & Friends, an animated educational series. Hermie & Friends features the voices of Time Conway, Don Knotts, Richard Kind and Vicki Lawrence.
MARKETING/LICENSING
There Will Soon Be 7 … no, not an Agatha Christie title, rather Scholastic’s marketing plan to support the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final book in J.K. Rowling’s Potter series. The multi-pronged There Will Soon Be 7 effort gets underway on April 17, 2007 and includes lots of 7’s (true HP fans will be happy to discuss all the 7’s associated with the release of this book). Can’t make it to a store party or forgot to preorder? Fear not, in its first US printing Scholastic will print 12 million copies of HP 7. Okay back here on earth, just in case you’ve been in the shower, napping or cleaning your cave, Deathly Hallows is set for release at 12:01a on July 21 (the 7th month, and 21 is divisible by 7). There Will Soon Be 7 marketing plans include:
- 7 Questions of Harry Potter – Every other week from April 17 to July 7, 2007, one question will be posted on Scholastic.com and appear in ads; key questions that are discussed, dissected and debated by HP fans.
- Knight Bus National Tour takes to the road June 2, which is, yes you guessed it, exactly seven weeks out from the publication date. Based on the vehicle in the HP books, the Knight Bus will start in NYC and will visit 40 libraries across 10 major markets in the US. Fans will be invited to visit the bus and record their thoughts on the HP series, some of which will be viewable online.
- Retail promotions – let’s just say there will be lots of them, including collectible bookmarks, in-store countdown signage, and on the big night there will be tattoos (I’ll go out on a limb here and say they’ll be the temporary versions).
- Scholastic’s online effort ( www.scholastic.com/harrypotter) will feature desktop alerts, downloadable printouts of posters and bookmarks, and updated Wizard Challenge questions as well as, polls, fan-generated seven word book reviews, Knight Bus tour tracker, and a book release party locator.
