Cynopsis: DIGITAL

06/04/09

Good morning, it’s Thursday, June 4, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Rupert Murdoch wanted his number 2 back and what Rupert wants, Rupert usually gets. News Corp. announced that DirecTV CEO (and former News Corp. executive) Chase Carey will return to the company as President and COO assuming Peter Chernin’s role, effective July 1. (Carey took over at DirecTV when it was part of News Corp. in 2003.)  He will also assume the title of Deputy Chairman and will oversee the News Corp. empire from New York instead of LA. Mr. Carey’s previous roles include co-COO of News Corp., co-COO of Fox Entertainment and CEO of Fox Television. His tenure with News Corp. dates back to 1988.

The proliferation of video friendly smartphones like the iPhone is helping someone. Mobile and online TV content aggregator MobiTV reached a milestone, soaring past 7 million subscribers in the U.S., adding some 2 million in the past 6 months. The subscription-based service is now available on more than 350 handsets across 20 carrier networks, including Sprint, AT&T and Alltel in the U.S.

ESPN
is relaunching Cricinfo, the online cricket site it acquired 2 years ago as ESPNCricinfo, improving navigation, enhancing the look and feel and increasing its video coverage. ESPN says cricket fandom (and traffic) is on the rise in the U.S.; the site has seen traffic increases of nearly 19% a year since 2006 and a 31% increase over the past year.

Real Content Group
announced the formation of a partnership with AllHipHop.com, to create AllHipHop Mobile in an mobile content play targeting the urban demographic. AllHipHop Mobile will serve as an outlet for music labels and artists to sell and showcase music, videos, photos, games and applications.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Speaking of milestones, Ashton Kutcher a.k.a. aplusk) who flew past the 1 million Twitter follower mark achieved in April, already surpassed two million followers. Who knows – Ashton may end up laughing all the way to the bank. At the Future of Media forum in New York, Twitter Chairman and co-founder Jack Dorsey claimed that several developers are working with the twitter API to create ways to enable Twitterers to charge for following them.

Live streaming platform Livestation teamed with Iranian news network Press TV to stream the live Presidential debate between incumbent Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his challenger in the forthcoming election, the last Prime Minister of Iran, Mir-Hossein Mousavi. (It was streamed on the Livestation website and is archived for download on Livestation.com.)

Call for Content: Trawling for the next laughing baby phenomenon, toddler-themed BabyFirstTV is asking parents to upload videos of their diapered dandy dancing for chance to be featured on the network.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

AdMob is preparing for the launch of the new iPhone 3.0 OS by releasing a new set of new ad formats incorporating social networking, search and rich media display functionality. Social networking units will integrate with Twitter, Facebook, Digg, MySpace, Flickr and Linkedin. AdMob is also combining search and display in a separate new format that will allow advertisers to add search boxes to banner ads enabling users to type queries directly within the ads. The company is currently working with developers leading up to the release of the new 3.0 OS software development kit (SDK) on June 5.

Facebook has added a new feature to its Facebook Ads solution allowing advertisers to bake interactivity into ads for pages and events without having to leave the page. Users can directly engage with businesses by clicking on the “Become a Fan” link or by RSVPing within the ad. The feature is designed to create a viral effect, as users will be able to see which of their friends are also fans or attendees of the event in question.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

A showdown is brewing over who gets to share in the government’s $7 billion in broadband stimulus money and broadband mapping techniques are at the center of the controversy, reports the WSJ. Consumer groups worry that large telecom providers are skewing the results of maps drawn up by mapping firm Connected Nation to help steer stimulus money toward big corporate sponsors.

In the latest chapter of their long running battle, a federal court in Texas ordered Dish Network to pay Tivo an additional $103 million in damages and interest for infringing on a Tivo patent with the release of a DVR intended to workaround the Tivo patent. Dish Networks need not worry just yet about losing their DVRs though – a federal appeals court stayed a ruling late yesterday meaning there will be yet another appeal.

Corporate slogans aside, a pair of consumer groups have called foul on President Obama’s pending appointment of Google‘s top global public policy official to the position of Deputy Chief Technology Officer in the White House. Consumer Watchdog and the Center for Digital Technology are both saying it would violate the intent of President Obama’s ethics rules meant to jam up the “revolving door” between lobbyists and the executive branch.

Move Networks announced it plans to support Intel‘s Linux-based next-generation “Moorestown” mobile internet device platform. The Move Media Player plug-in will allow consumers to access the network television programming on Intel-based devices.

Delve Networks will serve as the exclusive video platform for Tilzy.tv’s first-annual “Onfronts” digital entertainment showcase for major brands and advertisers to be held in New York on June 9th.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

In another attempt to persuade Hollywood that P2P users aren’t evil, Vuze released a new study with Frank N. Magid Associates illustrating that file sharers happen to be the studios biggest (legitimate) customers. The Vuze/Magid survey shows that the Vuze audiences attend 34% more movies in theaters, purchase 34% more DVDs and rent 24% more movies for a fee than the average internet audience in a given year. And they’re more tech-savvy and just as deep-pocketed (if not more so) than Joe Citizen:

  • 17% of the Vuze audience earns more than $100,000 per year (= national sample)
  • 65% own an HDTV (vs. 60%)
  • 53% have a home theater sound system connected to their TV (vs. 39%)
  • 41% have a smart phone (vs. 28%)
  • Connected to 55% more people on social networks (300 vs 193)
  • More likely to share opinions about new technologies (52% vs. 41%)

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

LG Electronics
began shipping two new Blu-ray players, the BD370 and BD390, that include Wi-Fi capabilities able to access content from Netflix, YouTube and Roxio CinemaNow.

The BlackBerry App World is beginning to have an impact for app makers. Evernote reports that the version of its popular audio/visual/text note taking app for the BlackBerry is already its single most requested version.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Google North American Director of Agency Relations Erin Clift is leaving to join AOL this month to work under new CEO Tim Armstrong, reports Ad Age. Erin’s new title will be SVP/Global Sales Development.

Caroline Little, CEO of North America for Guardian News & Media, has assumed the role of CEO at ContentNext Media, effective immediately. She is replacing current chief executive Nathan Richardson, who is taking an executive job with the e-commerce fashion company Gilt Groupe.

ABC News hired five new digital reporters to cover the Obama Administration and the economy. Clayton Sandell will be based in Denver, covering breaking news across the region as well as focusing on stories involving the environment, climate change and alternative energy. Tahman Bradley will be based in Detroit, covering Michigan and neighboring states as well as the auto industry. Karen Travers rejoins ABC News’ White House Team as a digital reporter and Matthew Jaffe is covering the Treasury Department, financial issues and the overall economy. The reporters will contribute on-and off-air reporting to all ABC News’ broadcasts and platforms.

Former NetApp publicist Eric Channing Brown has been appointed SVP/Global Communications at Yahoo. He will join the company in early July and report to Yahoo!’s chief marketing officer, Elisa Steele.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Online television recommendation engine BeeTV has raised $8 million in second round financing led by Italian VC fund Innogest. BeeTV does for TV viewers what Amazon does for readers, ingesting likes and dislikes by tracking viewing habits then curating personally contoured line-ups of programming. BeeTV’s proprietary, contextual matching algorithm not only tracks favorite genres – it also attempts to anticipate moods by calling into account dayparts, context, demographics and behavior. (Founder and CEO Yoram Granit conducts a demo of the interface on the BeeTV site – call it a Tivo with intuition.) Best of all the company is positioning the white label technology (sold to cable, satellite or IPTV providers) to work across multiple platforms, including broadcast TV, subscription TV, VOD, SVOD, PPV, and PVR/Catch-up. The system anticipates what you want to see, when you want to see it and pushes the relevant content to that subscriber via TV, PC or mobile. Such intelligence is one of the missing pieces when it comes to monetizing digital content because it will provide relevance and context to multiplatform content consumption.
