Cynopsis: Kids!
06/28/12

Good morning. It’s Thursday, June 28, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

KidsCo, an international kid’s channel, orders a new short form series (currently untitled) from Australian production company Matchbox Pictures, which will debut in early 2013 across territories where KidsCo is available. The short-form series was developed in collaboration with Australian actress/comedian/writer, Julie Eckersley, and the creators of the untitled series, Troy and Zara Swindells-Grose. Additionally, KidsCo has acquired the rights to Matchbox Pictures’ popular series My Place (season one and two, total of 26×22) from the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF). My Place is set to air in the second half of 2012 on KidsCo across Eastern Europe and Asia. Targeted to K7-11, My Place is a drama that tells the story of kids who live in one place over the course of 130 years. Earlier this year NBCUniversal International announced its acquisition of a controlling stake (51%) in KidsCo and the company also has an equity stake in Matchbox Pictures.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Sony Pictures Animation names Genndy Tartakovsky to direct its CGI 3D feature film adaptation of Popeye, per Variety. Arad Productions‘ Avi and Ari Arad will produce the new Popeye movie with Sony Pictures Animation. Tartakovsky is best known for his work on his own animated series including Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack, as well as animated series such as Powerpuff Girls and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Tartakovsky makes his feature film directing debut with Sony’s Hotel Transylvania, which releases September 29, 2012. Popeye was created by E.C. Segar, and made his initial appearance in King Features’ popular Thimble Theater comic strip in 1929. Popeye cartoons were produced by Fleischer Studios and later by Famous Studios. Director Robert Altman then brought Popeye to the big screen in a live-action feature film that starred Robin Williams in 1980.

LICENSING

Activision Publishing and Disney Interactive are teaming up to produce and distribute Wreck-It Ralph, a new video game for Wii, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS. Based on the upcoming Wreck-It Ralph movie from Disney Animation Studios, which opens November 2, 2012, the game is designed as a classic arcade-style side scroller title. The game will debut this fall to coincide with the movie. Directed by Rich Moore (The Simpsons, Futurama) and featuring the voices of John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch, the movie revolves around Ralph, a bad guy in an arcade game who sets out to prove that he can be a hero. However, a clumsy Ralph accidentally “wrecks” everything and unleashes an evil threat on his video game neighbors. The game picks up where the movie leaves off as Ralph partners with Fix-It Felix and sets out to save their friends and home from a huge Cy-Bug invasion.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products EMEA (WBCP EMEA) announces that EMTEC, a European mobile storage solutions and computer peripherals manufacturer, will launch a second collection of Looney Tunes USB keys. The new collection features four new character designs to EMTEC’s Looney Tunes flash drive line, including Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, Yosemite Sam and Marvin the Martian. The USB keys have a capacity of 8GB, a high read speed of up to 15MB/s and a write speed of 5MB/s.
