GroupM released its media and marketing forecasting study “This Year, Next Year” with the prediction global advertising spending in measured media could decline by -5.5% to $417 billion this year, though a slight recovery is expected in 2010. The study, which covers 70 countries, expects nations Brazil, Russia, India and China to lead the ad spending recovery while the G7 nations, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US, will fall behind. In the US alone, the report says ad spending could fall -4.3% in 2009 followed by a further slump to -6.5% next year. GroupM Futures Director Adam Smith in London and GroupM Chief Investment Office Rino Scanzoni in New York jointly released this report, with data from parent company WPP and its global resources in the areas of advertising, public relations, market research and specialist communications.

Correction: Kent Weed of A. Smith & Co. is an executive producer on the FOX series Hell’s Kitchen which opens its sixth season July 21 with a two-hour episode at 8p. We erroneously listed him as Kent Week.

ABC handed a six-episode order to RDF USA (Wife Swap, Secret Millionaire) and RelativityReal (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition) for the series Find My Family. The series, based on the Dutch format Lost Without a Trace, follows people who are eager to find a long-lost relative or friend. CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Despite concerns about piracy and harming the lucrative pay TV business model, the cable industry jumped into the broadband video race with two feet yesterday. Time Warner and Comcast announced a partnership to make original TBS and TNT programming available online to Comcast customers for no extra charge under the MSO’s “On Demand Online” brand. Comcast will begin a nationwide trial to test authentication technology involving about 5,000 households next month, hoping other major cable networks will participate. The shows will be initially accessible on Comcast.net, Fancast.com and will soon also be available on TNT.tv and TBS.com. Time Warner also said it is in talks with other MSOs to join the TV Everywhere model.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

This day in History:  1951 – In New York, the first regular commercial color TV transmissions were presented on CBS using the FCC-approved CBS Color System. The public did not own color TV’s at the time, and in fact were not bought by consumers in large numbers until the late 1960’s.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:   These two little musical ditties – In Love with Atilla the Hun and Guns of Navarone — were written by Bill Persky and Sam Denoff, who were also writers on The Dick Van Dyke Show. The two musical pieces first aired on the DVD show in the episode titled Bupkiss. They were also both featured in another sitcom written by Persky and Denoff in the late 1960’s. In that situation, the male character “wrote these two piano jingles” for his girlfriend. What was the name of the second sitcom? THAT GIRL Kudos to: George Pellegrino/West Chester PA; Douglas Hochstadt-ABC/NY; Michael Goodman-Radio One Atlanta/Atlanta; Monica Caraffa-RDR Promotions; Jim Roche-Weigel Broadcasting/Chicago; John Kukla-KDFW-KDFI/Dallas; Dale Warshaw-KMSB/KTTU/Tucson; Joanne Stern-WGN/Chicago; Susan Nessanbaum Goldberg-M and S Entertainment/LA; Greg Stewart-Evolution Media/Burbank; David Scott Jones-Marleigh Entertainment/LA; Suzanne Leichter-eModeration; Casey Angelova-Nu Image/Bulgaria

Today’s Trivia Question submitted by Steve Lance/PS Insights:  Barry played the title role in the TV series “Bat Masterson.” Masterson lived to a ripe old age and became a fight promoter in Brooklyn, NY. What famous Broadway musical character is based on the real William Barclay “Bat” Masterson?  (Email
