Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 8, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
See the date? July 8. Know what that means? Local People Meters begin measuring the Los Angeles DMA today. During an adjustment period, Nielsen will continue to use the Meter/Diary system until August 4, taking the market through the July sweep, effectively that market’s last sweep. The next market to get the LPMs is Chicago on August 5, which will also provide dual measurements through September 22. And on September 30, San Francisco will begin with LPMs, also providing meter/diary services through December 29. In an effort to enhance representation of minorities and people of color in the LA market, Nielsen has increased its LPM sample by 50% over that of the meter/diary system, with 50% more African Americans and Latino households.
The seemingly on again, off again, Amish reality series on UPN is definitely on, and will be on on beginning July 28 with two back to back episodes at 8p and 9p, according to Variety. Amish in the City drew controversy early on when it was first announced at TCA last winter, talk of potential exploitation, etc. The show focuses on a coming of age ritual called rumspringa, where young people can choose to venture away from their Amish community and while away come to a lifelong decision to either live the rest of their lives within the Amish community, or go mainstream. In this series, five Amish teens and six mainstream teens are put in a la-di-da Hollywood mansion, with cameras recording their reactions to each other, as well as to their new surroundings and lifestyle. This show was not part of UPN’s upfront presentation in May, and in fact when asked about it, both Leslie Moonves and Dawn Ostroff stuck with no comment.
CBS was wall to wall premieres on Tuesday night with the 90m launches of Big Brother 5 and The Amazing Race, winning the night in both total viewers and in the key A18-49 demo according to Nielsen Media Research. Big Brother 5 drew a summer satisfying 3.7/12, and The Amazing Race a 4.3/11. NBC had one original hour Tuesday night at 9pm with Last Comic Standing which drew a 4.0/11, basically tying CBS during that 9-10p hour with Big Brother ending and Amazing Race beginning. ABC’s NYPD 24/7 at 10p drew a 2.4/6, ranking third for the hour behind CBS and NBC. Summerland on WB was the only other original hour of bcst programming and at 9pm delivered a 1.3/4 A18-49 rating, though its strengths continue to be in the younger demos: teens 2.5/9; W18-34 2.1/6 and female teens found a very strong audience with a 4.8/16.
This season’s primetime Emmy Awards, scheduled to air on ABC September 19, will once again look to Garry Shandling for hosting duties. ABC used Shandling the last time it aired the awards in 2000. Nominations for the 56th annual t-da are scheduled for next week, July 15 at 8:39am ET.
SoapNet has picked up two off-net series, both from Aaron Spelling an both distributed by Paramount: Beverly Hills 90210 which will airs weekdays beginning in 2005 (10 seasons worth of episodes); and the seven seasons of Melrose Place which kicks off this September at 6pm.
