Cynopsis: Kids!

07/30/09

Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 30, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Disney XD has begun production in Hollywood on its live-action/music-filled comedy I’m In The Band (formerly known as Viper Slap).  The series revolves around Tripp, a teen boy living out his dream, as he becomes a member his favorite classic rock band.  Tripp is determined to help the band, comprised of a bunch of misfits, get it together for a major comeback, while in turn they find their own way of helping him navigate the teen experience.  Created by Michael Kaplan (Frasier, Girlfriends) and Ron Rappaport, the series executive producers are Michael Kaplan (Frasier, Girlfriends) and Richard Gurman (Married … with Children, Still Standing), the series will star Logan Miller, Steve Valentine, Greg Baker and Stephen Full.

Universal and Illumination Entertainment (Horton Hears a Who) are partnering to adapt Dr. Seuss (AKA Theodor Geisel) environmental-centric book The Lorax (1971) as a 3D CG animated feature film, per Variety.  Slated for a March 2, 2012 release (which would have been Geisel’s 108th birthday), the movie will be co-directed by Chris Renaud and Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio (the duo wrote Horton Hears a Who), with the latter two penning the script.  Producing The Lorax movie is Illumination head Chris Meledandri and its John Cohen and Janet Healy, with the author’s wife Audrey Geisel serving as executive producer.  DePatie-Freleng Enterprises produced The Lorax as an animated TV special, written by Geisel, which aired on CBS in 1972, and featured the voices of Eddie Albert as the narrator and noted voiceover actor Bob Holt as The Lorax and The Once-ler.  Licensing and merchandising on this project will be interesting as the story also offers an indictment of consumerism.

Bryce Dallas Howard (Terminator Salvation) will take over the role of Victoria (a vampire) in Summit Entertainment‘s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third movie in the Twilight series.  Rachelle Lefevre has played Victoria in the first two movies, Twilight and the upcoming The Twilight Saga: New Moon, but due to scheduling conflicts with another commitment she is unavailable for Eclipse, which is slated to begin filming in Vancouver in August.  The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will release in North American on Wednesday, June 30, 2010.

Sony Pictures Animation and IMAX Corporation officially unveil plans to release Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs in Imax 3D simultaneously with the movie’s release on September 18, 2009.  Written for the screen and directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs is based on the popular kid’s book of the same name written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by Ron Barrett.

This week marks Harlequin Enterprises launch of Harlequin TEEN, a new fiction imprint targeted to young adults, primarily girls 13-18.  The first three titles from the new imprint will rollout in successive months: My Soul to Take (August) by Rachel Vincent (My Soul to Lose)  is a about a teen who discovers that she is a banshee; Intertwined by Gena Showalter (September) – features a teen who learns that he has four souls living inside him; Elphame’s Choice (October) by P.C. Cast (c0-author House of Night vampire series)  revolves around a young half human/half centaur who sets out to make her way in the world.  With plans for a full publishing slate in 2010, Harlequin TEEN expects to publish 12-14 titles each year, many of which will feature paranormal, fantasy and/or science fiction element.  Additionally, readers are invited to log onto www.harlequinteen.com to learn more about the first three titles as well as download Rachel Vincent’s free eBook prequel, My Soul to Lose.

Studio100 Media signs a buy-out agreement with Waldemar Bonsels Foundation for additional rights to the classic property Maya the Bee.  Studio100 Media, which already holds all exploitation rights (e.g. TV, Video, VOD and merchandising) to the existing animated TV series (104 episodes, 1975) and the animated feature film (1977), how has the film, development and exploitation rights for an unlimited number of new series, new films, remakes, stage show and theme park rights to the character Maya the Bee and the underlying books written by Waldemar Bonsels.  Under the deal The Bonsels Foundation only retains the publishing rights to the original books.  Bonsels’ Maya the Bee was published in 1912.

The first products are currently slated to be available in spring 2010.  Further plans also call for MV Sport and Leisure to develop a soft/nursery plush range for the second stage of the Fluffy Gardens rollout plan.
