Cynopsis: DIGITAL

07/30/09

Good morning, it’s Thursday, July 30, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

After years of flirting and false starts, Microsoft hammered out a 10-year search and advertising partnership with Yahoo that will take effect beginning in early 2010, pending regulatory approval. The agreement will utilize Yahoo’s sales force to sell premium search ad space and place Redmond’s well-received Bing search technology at the center of the entire Yahoo network. Microsoft will not shell out a large upfront payment like once discussed, but the company will offer revenue guarantees throughout the term of the deal and return most of the search revenue generated from Yahoo’s sites. Yahoo investors weren’t crazy about the news (shares fell by 8%,) but industry analysts viewed the partnership as the best hope at combating Google’s dominant position in search. The two have their work cut out for them as, combined, they accounted for less than half of Google’s 65% market share in June, according to ComScore.

NBC Local Integrated Media
launched the commercial versions of its 10 “Locals Only” city websites designed to be local news, entertainment and informational portals within NBC’s O&O markets. NBC says traffic to sites such as nbcchicago.com, which invites you to relieve Mark Buehrle’s perfect game in this slideshow, has climbed from 5 million to 20 million uniques during the beta period. Recent innovations include “mood ratings” and the social “SoMyCity” section.

CBSSports.com is “embedding” a different correspondent to cover each NFL team this season. Each reporter to file multiple “RapidReports” daily from team facilities and stadiums providing the latest on workouts, injuries, cuts and dramas.

Oxygen.com
is cooking up a web series to accompany its new series The Naughty Kitchen With Chef Blythe Beck, premiering in the fall. Blythe is the chef of upscale American cuisine restaurant Central 214 in Dallas.

Call for content: Comcast’s G4 starts production for its “American Ninja Warrior,” another Japanese obstacle course series in August and is currently looking for competitors. Submit videos showcasing your “ninja skills” at G4TV.com/AmericanNinja for a chance to audition in Los Angeles and travel to Japan to try and tackle the famed Sasuke course.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Podcasting ad technology firm VoloMedia Inc. says it received its first patent award for its “method for providing episodic media,” covering podcasting or any other digital distribution of media in episodic form. Podcasting has been around for awhile but VoloMedia CEO Murgesh Navar filed for the patent back in 2003, before iTunes added the format and filed for its own patent application. The company, which hopes to use the patent to spur collaboration with publishers, has already developed an analytics platform integrating episodic media with Google Analytics.

Paris-based interactive music start-up MXP4 has put together a Michael Jackson widget to showcase its layered digital music format. Seeking to advance the ubiquitous MP3 format, MXP4 allows listeners to create their own remixes, view videos, photos, breaking news; and make direct purchases from the artist.

Twitter unveiled a new home page to try and attract non-initiates. Twitter’s bird mascot now flutters around the logo and a big new search bar that promises to discover “what people are saying about _______.”

Digital media producer Deca is celebrating the 100th episode of its confessional motherhood-themed podcast Momservation. Guests on the show have included Dooce blogger Heather Armstrong and Daphne Brogdon of coolmom.com fame.

Apple reached a 3-year deal with China Unicom to finally launch the iPhone in the Chinese market, reports Shangahi Security News. The telecom provider, which competes with China Mobile in the wireless arena, expects to sell between 1 and 2 million units annually, according to the report.

Swedish gaming firm Global Gaming Factory‘s deal to acquire P2P content sharing site The Pirate Bay is sinking as GGF struggles to come up with $7.8 million in cash for the acquisition, reports TorrentFreak. (The blog’s source of information is former Grokster CEO Wayne Rosso, who has quit his role as negotiator for the deal.) The site, which is still operational despite losing a legal battle against copyright holders in April, is now the target of a new lawsuit filed by 13 studios that seek an injunction to shut down the site.

The race is on to offer full HD-quality online streaming. Sonic Solutions announced that it will use some of the same next generation technology used to encode Blu-ray films to stream movies in 1080p resolution. CineVision Adaptive HD will be deployed to bring HD content to the Roxio CinemaNow service and will be made available as an option in the white label Sonic’s CineVision Master Encoding system. Microsoft’s Xbox platform is one of the platforms leading the HD streaming charge, announcing it will offer 1080p HD streaming on every possible title beginning this fall.

Approximately 98.9% of U.S. homes are now able to receive digital television signals according to Nielsen, a gain of 229,000 homes in the last two weeks and 1.3 million homes since the week of the June 12 DTV transition. As of July 26, only 1.2 million homes were unable to receive digital signals

It will be interesting to see what effect Yahoo’s new homepage and the Bing integration will have on Yahoo’s engagement results, an important metric when setting ad rates. Efforts by MSN and AOL to improve engagement appear to be working as the number of average page views increased by 15 and 10 views per user from June ’08 to June ’09 respectively, according to web analytics firm Compete. Facebook, which averaged 19 page views/user, was the fastest growing site in terms of unique visitors, growing by 158% to 62 million uniques during the past year.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Twitter has proven to be infectious and addictive but one has to agree that it’s tremendously limiting in terms of visual flair. A new technology called “blerping” from the minds at RocketOn exits beta this morning with a colorful alternative. Blerp.com allows users to hold conversations about what they’re seeing online and actually take their “metadiscussions” to third party sites. If you see a video on YouTube, a photo on Flickr or virtually any widgetized piece of content you can leave your two cents in a comic book-like thought bubble that friends in your network can share. (Posts can also come in the from of pictures or videos.) Built on top of RocketOn’s patent pending Hyperlayers Platform, the interface requires no downloads and allows you to browse among current discussions by popularity or topic. Publishers can use Blerp as a tool to generate buzz by cutting and pasting a simple bit of code on their site, providing full Blerp functionality. There are many smart features that improve upon simple tweeting. A sidebar allows you to view and manage extended discussions. One-button integrations with Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and Digg allow you to share your posts and should help Blerp gain traction. Another nice feature is the “Super Note”: most blerps are limited to 250 characters but the Super Note option allows you to extend this when pithy remarks just won’t do.
