Discovery Channel embarks on an experiment of survival for its newest series titled The Colony, premiering July 21 at 10p. In this new 10-episode series, 10 volunteers with different backgrounds will live isolated for two months in an abandoned warehouse as if the world as we know it has been destroyed. Inside this 50,000 sq. ft. warehouse, located in downtown L.A., these 10 people will have no electricity, no running water and no communication with the rest of the world and during this two month period will be charged with building a functioning society. Original Productions, a unit of FremantleMedia produces The Colony for Discovery Channel. In August, Universal HD introduces a new block of programming featuring three series that were canceled before the end of their original network runs including some previously unseen episodes. Universal HD Rediscovered TV airs Fridays starting at 9p and includes That’s Life (2000) from CBS; Sex, Love, & Secrets (2005) from UPN; and Cuts (2005) also from UPN. Sleuth also has picked up the action series Seven Days starting next month which originally aired on UPN from 1998-2001. Seven Days is about an ex-CIA agent with a photographic memory who turns back the clock seven days to prevent catastrophic events with the help of a time machine. Seven Days will air Sundays in August from 7p-3a. Veteran actor Karl Malden, 97, died of natural causes yesterday at his home in Brentwood. Karl, whose television and film career spanned six decades was best known for his starring role in the ABC TV series The Streets of San Francisco and his Oscar-winning supporting actor role in Elia Kazan’s A Streetcar Named Desire from 1952. Karl was nominated for an Emmy Award during each of the five seasons of The Streets of San Francisco, yet his win came for the 1984 miniseries Fatal Vision on NBC. Well-respected throughout the industry, Karl served on the board of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and was the Academy president from 1989-1991. He also was active within the Screen Actors Guild, serving on their board in the 1960s through the early 1970s and was honored with SAG’s lifetime achievement award in 2003. Karl will also be remembered for two other attributes: his bulbous nose, the result of multiple football injuries in high school, and for his authoritative and soothing voice used in numerous TV commercials. Karl had roles in many notable films including All My Sons, Ruby Gentry, I Confess, On the Waterfront and Gypsy among others. The prolific actor also was home on the stage where his career began and later when his career was established did revivals of Desire Under the Elms and The Desperate Hours. Karl is survived by his wife and former actress, Mona Greenberg. The couple was married in 1938 and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last December. Karl also has two daughters, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Nielsen reports progress continues to be made with switching all US households to DTV. Since the actual transition date of June 12, more than 800,000 US homes have made the switch with half that number converting last week. This now leaves 1.5% of US homes or 1.7 million total homes remaining completely unready. ~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~
American Latino Syndication, a wholly-owned division of LATV Networks said its nationally syndicated shows American Latino TV and LatiNaton have both received a firm go, picking up enough affiliate renewals to secure eighth and sixth seasons respectively. Both series will premiere the week of September 28, 2009. ~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
SCI FI Channel is in development on a new version of Alien Nation, the feature film from 1988 that resulted in a subsequent spinoff series on FOX, per Variety. Tim Minear will write and Fox 21, the alternative production unit of 20th Century Fox TV will produce. Alien Nation is about a veteran cop and his alien detective partner working together in a world where aliens are living on Earth and trying to assimilate in society. Additionally, SCI FI is readying for its major rebrand next Tuesday when SCI FI officially becomes Syfy on-air and online at Syfy.com. Coinciding with the rebrand, SCI FI (or Syfy) will launch the new series Warehouse 13 with a two-hour premiere Tuesday at 9p. National Geographic Channels International is co-producing two new series with Lonely Planet Television based in Australia. The first is a 13-part series called Lonely Planet: Roads Less Travelled premiering this November on Nat Geo Adventure where Lonely Planet travel writers and photographers will explore areas off the beaten track. The second series, Graham’s World follows British filmmaker Graham Hughes as he travels by himself to every country without using airplanes. Graham’s World will have eight episode run on Nat Geo Adventure debuting next year. CMT is teaming with reality producer John Irwin and his company Irwin Entertainment (VH1’s Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew and Sober House) for a hillbilly-styled series called All Jacked Up, reports THR. During eight 30m episodes, the series with host C. Thomas Howell travels the US looking for crazy people and stunts such as eating contests, demolition derbies, jet-powered outhouses and more. All Jacked Up is scheduled to premiere August 22 at 830p. ABC picked up the 13-episode adventure/drama Gravity from Fox TV Studios, cites THR. The series, starring Ron Livingston, is produced internationally with Vancouver-based Omni Film Productions and will also air on Canada’s CTV, Germany’s ProSieben and the BBC. The storyline of Gravity is set in the near future about eight astronauts from five countries who are involved in an unknown assignment traveling the solar system. ABC will air the series this summer. James Parriott serves as creator/executive producer along with executive producer Michael Edelstein. Omni Film Productions’ Brian Hamilton and Michael Chechik also serve as executive producers. ~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~
