CBBC unveiled two new commissions for kid-targeted series from BBC North, a sitcom and a factual series to be produced in Manchester, yesterday at the UK’s annual Showcomotion Children’s conference.
- First up is Jinx (13×13), a sitcom based on the Lulu Baker book series by Fiona Dunbar about a modern-day teen Cinderella, her magical cookbook and the guardian of the book, Cookie, a mischievous imp. Set to begin production this month, Jinx is being produced by Kindle Entertainment.
- The second project is the factual series This Kid Could Change the World (9×30). The show will feature kids from across the country and put their potentially world altering ideas to the test. Through a series of tasks two expert innovators and a mysterious benefactor ‘The Big Cheese’ will determine which ideas have the potential to succeed or fail in the real world. The series finale will include a live studio audience of kids that will decide which idea moves forward. The series is set to air in 2010 and will be produced by Shine North.
- Additionally, new seasons of the CBBC’s popular shows Prank Patrol and Beat the Boss will be produced in Manchester. Produced by Baker Media, the third season of Prank Patrol is comprised of 10×28 episodes, which will deliver later this year. Season five of Beat the Boss includes 5×28 episodes produced by Moray London.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
With Warner Bros. release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince set for July 15, news about casting on the next movies, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (the two-part movie based on the seventh HP book) is swirling. News from The Leaky Cauldron, by way of The Independent, is that actor Bill Nighy (Pirates of the Caribbean, Underworld) is a member of the Deathly Hallows cast. Nighy says, “I don’t think I’m allowed to say it but I’m going to be in the next Harry Potter film … I won’t say which character, but he’s a goodie.” As for those pondering what character Nighy might portray, The Leaky Cauldron is guessing he’ll play Rufus Scrimgeour. Part one of Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is slated for release on November 19, 2010, followed on July 15, 2011 by part two.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Toei Animation Europe S.A.S and TF1 Vision, a French VOD platform, launch the animated properties for older kids/teen and up, Captain Harlock and Ken, the Great Bear Fist in VOD, today in France. The two series will be available on PC thought www.tf1vision.fr and in IPTV platforms through TF1 Vision stores (US$2.10/per episode).
Nickelodeon‘s AddictingGames portal will launch several games for the iPhone this month that will enable developers to tap into the portal’s loyal players and act as cross-promotional tools for several MTV Networks brands including Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and MTV. Developers who join the AddictingGames iNetwork can integrate community features on their apps such as high scores, level builders and Facebook Connect integration in exchange for a revenue share of their titles. The initial gaming apps will include “iParking It,” based on the “Parking Lot” game series on AddictingGames.com; “50 States,” a geography duel; and the strategy game “World Wars.”
LimeWire partners with CD Baby, a digital distributor of independent music, to sell their digital catalogue in the LimeWire Store. CD Baby represents 240,000+ indie artists including those making music targeted to kids and families. This deal brings LimeWire’s total number of licensed tracks to over 3.5 million.
This fall, Fisher-Price will introduce two new playset lines, Precious Places Swan Palace and Imaginext Dragon World Fortress, for K 3+. These playsets and accessories are designed to foster creative classic and imaginative play patterns.
Beyonce and her designer mom Tina Knowles are set to launch a new junior apparel and accessories line Sasha Fierce for Dereon, per WWD. The line, which takes its name from Beyonce’s alter ego from her third solo album I Am … Sasha Fierce (2008) and is inspired by the outfits on the current concert tour for that album, will debut for back-to-school and features sportswear, outerwear, handbags, footwear, eyewear, lingerie and jewelry all priced between $25-$75. The Sasha Fierce line will be available at Macy’s and Dillard’s department stores as well as special stores such as Jimmy Jazz and Against All Odds.
MTV Networks International (MTVNI) appoints Roberto Bagatti as VP/Creative, MTVNI and Creative Director/World Design Studio in Milan. Based in Milan, Bagatti reports to Antonio Campo Dall’Orto, EVP/Music Brands for MTVNI. Most recently Bagatti and his team led the creative development and execution of MTV’s international re-brand that launches this week. Prior to this, Bagatti served as Creative Director/MTV Networks South Europe. Bagatti has been with MTV since 1999 when he joined MTV Italia as a Sr. Designer in the London based on-air group, later becoming Creative Director for the Italian MTV channels which include MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and QOOB and La7 (a Telecom Italia Media terrestrial channel).
Haim Saban’s Saban Capital Group (SCG), a private investment firm specializing in the media/entertainment/communications, names Elie Dekel as Managing Director. Dekel, most recently head of Licensing and Merchandising for 20th Century Fox, will be based in LA and report to SCG President and COO Adam Chesnoff. He will focus on expanding the SCG’s licensing, merchandising and intellectual property opportunities in the US and internationally. Previously, Dekel was an Agent at the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), specializing in content creation and marketing, brand integration and licensing, and prior to that was President of Saban Consumer Products/Fox Family Worldwide.
The International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA) elects three new members to its 15-person Board of Directors. Joining the LIMA board for terms running July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2012 are:

- Sabine Eckhardt, MD/MM MerchandisingMedia
- Glenn Hendricks, VP/Business Development, Licensing & Merchandising, SloaneVision Unlimited
