~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC ordered six episodes of the sports-themed franchise Superstars from Juma Entertainment and Blue Equity’s Blue Entertainment. The revamped format has eight celebrities paired with eight professional athletes competing in various sports categories such as swimming, biking, running and kayaking. Teams will be eliminated each week until one remains. Originally developed by Barry Frank and Dick Button during ABC’s Wide World of Sports, Superstars has resurfaced in several forms over the years since 1973 and was most recently seen here in the States in 2002.

Kelsey Grammer will headline a new 30m comedy, this time a pilot ordered by ABC produced by Good Humor TV and Warner Bros. Television, reports Variety. This multi-camera comedy has Grammer playing a corporate tycoon who after losing his job tries to reconnect with his family. Tucker Cawley (Everybody Loves Raymond) is writing the pilot while Grammer, Cawley and Good Humor’s Tom Werner and Mike Clements will all executive produce.

PBS announced at the Television Critics Association Winter press tour in Los Angeles it has three new series on the docket:

  • The Tenth Inning – new documentary film from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick produced as a follow up to the nine-part Baseball series which aired in 1994. PBS will re-broadcast Baseball and The Tenth Inning in the spring of 2010. The Tenth Inning is produced by Florentine Films and WETA Washington, D.C.
  • Circus – series from Show of Force, the team behind the PBS series Carrier, goes behind the scenes of the people and spectacle of the modern-day circus. Scheduled to debut fall 2010.

Cisco also wants to build the software to make this happen. Eos is a hosted, white-label software platform that allows media & entertainment companies to build online communities around their content. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  In a regular review of its financial condition, combined end of the year review and looking forward into 2009, American Greetings Corp. revealed that its agreement to sell the Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears properties and its rights to the Sushi Pack property to Cookie Jar Entertainment Inc., is in jeopardy.  Initially announced in July 2008, the pact with Cookie Jar, a $195 million cash deal, was to have closed by September 30, 2008, but says that didn’t happen due to the unstable economy.  Therefore, American Greetings is exercising its right to solicit offers from third parties to acquire the properties until March 31, 2009.  During this period, Cookie Jar has the right to match any new offer “up to a pre-established threshold.”  A spokesperson for the company said, “Cookie Jar has nothing new to report at this time and has no additional comments.”  Cookie Jar’s original agreement with American Greetings came on the heels of Cookie Jar’s acquisition of DIC Entertainment.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.
