Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning, it’s Thursday, January 8, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing .
Cisco Systems unveiled its vision of a “connected life” at CES yesterday with a series of home networking products designed to help consumers get their various devices to speak to each another. The Cisco Media Hub will act as a digital archive for storage of photos, music and videos, distributing content to any PC or TV in the home. Cisco also wants to build the software to make this happen. Eos is a hosted, white-label software platform that allows media & entertainment companies to build online communities around their content. Eos integrates social networking, content management and site administration features into a single operating environment, theoretically providing the tools to allow content owners to deliver a more immersive consumer experience. Warner Music Group has signed on to deploy Eos to a group of sites devoted to specific artists.
3-D technology continues to find new ways to win the hearts and minds of America. College football fans can watch tonight’s BCS Championship Game between Florida and Oklahoma at one of 80 Cinedigm cinema screens. The event, the first national live sporting event delivered to audiences in 3D at multiple locations, will be shot by a 3ality camera crew using Sony cameras with Fox Sports providing play-by-play and color commentating. Tickets are going for between $18-$22 and they’re going fast. Check out Cinedigm’s CineLive site for theater locations.
In more connected living room news, Samsung announced it is working on a new web-based content service scheduled for release this spring powered by a new “Widget Engine” created by Yahoo. The widgets will allow users to keep up with their accounts on Flickr, Yahoo News or Yahoo Finance as well as view content from YouTube, eBay, Showtime Networks and others.
Yahoo‘s widget engine will also power a new service called NetCast Entertainment Access on connected LG HDTVs. LG has also signed content deals with Netflix and YouTube.
Netflix announced that its Watch Instantly streaming video service will also be integrated with the price sensitive Vizio line of HDTVs, without the need of a separate set-top.
Showtime launched a cleanly designed new sign-up microsite featuring interactive elements, clips and full episode samplings of original shows. The site also integrates with Showtime’s new pages on Facebook, YouTube and Flickr to give passerby’s an idea the fun they are missing.
A trio of Revision3‘s tech-focused shows – Tekzilla, hak5 and Hack College – will broadcast live from CES over the next few days. Exuberance goes a long way in these productions and for vloggers like Veronica Belmont, the show floor is Nirvana itself.
Meanwhile CBS is pulling the plug on Wallstrip, the finance-themed video blog it acquired for a reported $4 million in 2007 reports PEHub. The show, which has been on hiatus since Dec. 12, will be redeveloped into a similarly-themed show on CBS sister property BNet.
Online entertainment producer Gen2Media has built a new portal to showcase independent music on the Xbox Live platform. e360live.com is creating exclusive original content in multiple genres for Xbox Live users, including behind-the-scenes footage with performances from up-and-coming artists. The e360live site provides easy tools enabling bands to upload their own songs, promote their work and sell their own mp3s, music video downloads or hardcopy CDs and DVDs.
Facebook/MySpace Widgetmaker Buddy Media appears to be generating real money creating branded social media applications or “app-vertisement” campaigns for major brands. Despite dramatic pullbacks in ad budgets, the company says its revenue grew 138% from Q3 2008 to Q4 2008. Buddy Media also notes that 15 of its 50 branded widgets clients were Fortune 500 advertisers including Bud Light, Reebok, HBO and Chevy.
Mobile ad marketplace AdMob launched a new feature allowing advertisers to monitor conversion rates in Apple’s App Store – in other words, count the clicks that lead to the download of an iPhone application. The tool gives advertisers of new apps a way to measure effectiveness of their marketing campaigns. Initial testing have shown ave. conversion rate of 10% for free apps and higher than 1% for paid apps.

Microsoft beat out Google to become the default search provider for all Verizon Wireless phones, per Reuters.
Here we go again. A unnamed group of buyers is putting their ducks in a row to make another buyout offer for Yahoo each with financial backing from Microsoft, reports TechCrunch. Under the terms of the deal, the group would make a takeover bid for Yahoo at a modest premium of around 20% to its current price of $13/share, which pegs the company’s value at just over $20 billion.
The Open Mobile Video Coalition is holding a series of press conferences and demos this week at CES to stoke interest in the mobile broadcasting standard, designed to bring broadcast-quality TV simulcasts and interactive applications to mobile and portable devices. The standard will undergo testing between now and early summer with extensive interoperability tests and trials planned for various markets.
A project demonstrating the viability of an HD Radio Electronic Program Guide (EPG) ecosystem for AM and FM U.S. radio broadcasting has received approval and funding to proceed to a second phase, culminating in an on-air EPG field trial later this year. The project is the work of a consortium led by BIA Advisory Services of Chantilly, VA and Broadcast Signal Lab of Boston, MA, with the cooperation of Unique Interactive, a UK-based company, and is funded by the NAB’s Flexible Advanced Services for Television and Radio On All Devices (NAB FASTROAD) technology advocacy program.
Tribune is teaming with online ticket vendor TicketNetwork to enable its newspaper, television and radio websites to sell tickets to live events in their local areas.
Citing statistics from panel-based measurement firm Hitwise, which ranks similar publishers in terms of like and kind market share, PBS claimed the honor as the most visited broadcast network website in 2008. PBS.org ranked as the top broadcast site for 19 weeks compared to 12 weeks each for CBS.com and NBC.com. PBS.org and PBSKids.org reported record traffic years in 2008. PBSKids.org benefitted from a new video player, which streamed nearly one million clips/week and generated more than 13 million total streams since its launch last fall, according to CDN thePlatform.
Tivo enhanced its search functionality to take advantage of widescreen HDTVs. Formerly known as “Swivel Search,” the new Tivo Search tool now displays show results with high definition visual name cards and allows users to select individual episodes or entire season passes directly from the search menu.
Univision Online has rebranded itself to Univision Interactive Media and named Kevin Conroy as its new President. Formerly EVP, products for AOL who worked most recently on building iPhone apps for the company, Kevin will oversee all things digital at the Spanish broadcasting giant including Univision.com and Univision Movil.
Revision3 has named former G4TV Executive Producer Ryan Vance as VP/Programming and Production. Vance will be based in Revision3’s San Francisco headquarters and spearhead production and programming efforts across Revision3’s network of shows. He reports to CEO Jim Louderback.
Quepasa Corporation, operator of Quepasa.com, hired Brian Garrett to serve as VP/Business Development and Strategy and Paulo Maia as the General Manager of Quepasa Brazil, which is slated to launch in late March. Prior to joining Quepasa, Brian was co-founder and Managing Director of venture fund Crosscut Ventures and Paulo served as CEO of ClickFilmes, a video-on-demand distributor of interactive content.
Embattled New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson attended a joint press conference yesterday with multiplatform ReelzChannel CEO Stan Hubbard to announce that the company will relocate its headquarters early this year from Minneapolis and St. Paul to Albuquerque, New Mexico, an up-and-coming location for feature film productions.
One of more elegant multiplatform personal media solutions out there for the iPhone and iPod touch is i.TV. If you watch a lot of TV (or go to a lot of movies) this app is one of the best arguments for getting an iPhone. It provides a visually elegant location-based run down of everything that is on TV or playing at your local theaters, including accessible bios of stars and directors. A bright red tag alerts you to new episodes or premiers. Community members can rate, review and recommend shows for the uninitiated. iTV also integrates with your Tivo and Netflix accounts, making it simple to schedule recordings or to manage your queue. The new updated version also streams select full TV episodes (although this drains the battery pretty quickly,) enables movie ticket purchasing and provides entertainment news and show recaps. All of these tasks can be completed with different apps but it’s nice to have them bundled in one place.
