Cynopsis: Kids!

01/29/09

Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 29, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Studio B Productions and Slap Happy Cartoons ink a development deal for the K6-11 targeted 2D animated series B.O.O.M. Boys (52×11).  Created by Slap Happy Cartoons, B.O.O.M. Boys is a comedy about three tween bionic brothers who build wild inventions while escaping the evil military agency that developed them.  Slap Happy founders and B.O.O.M. Boys creators Josh Mepham, Greg Sullivan, and Kathy Rocchio and Vito Viscomi all previously toiled for Studio B as directors, writers, and producers.  Studio B is a production subsidiary of DHX Media Ltd.

Author Neil Gaiman, who awarded the John Newbery Medal by the American Library Association for his new book The Graveyard Book earlier this week, has revealed to the world on the Today Show that the book will be adapted for the big screen by screenwriter/director Neil Jordan.  Meanwhile, if that wasn’t enough for Gaiman, the stop-motion 3D movie version of his book Coraline opens nationwide next week February 6.  Penned by Gaiman, The Graveyard Book is illustrated by Dave McKean and published by HarperCollins Children’s Books.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Coming Home: Military Families Cope With Change (1x3o), a new primetime special produced by Sesame Workshop, in association with David Letterman’s Worldwide Pants Incorporated and Lookalike Productions, will premiere on PBS on April 1, 2009 at 8p (check local listings) in conjunction with April as the Month of the Military Child.  Featuring Queen Latifah, John Mayer and Elmo, the special focuses on stories of service people returning home from war with various injuries (both visible and invisible), and how they and their families struggle to find their way back to a “normal” family life.  Downloadable videos and bilingual (English/Spanish) support materials for the special are available via The Talk, Listen, Connect initiative at www.sesamestreet.org/tlc, with information also available on www.pbsparents.org.

Boomerang welcomes D.C. Comics‘ series Teen Titans to its Boomeraction programming block beginning Monday, February 2 at 10:30p.  Teen Titans joins the Monday-Friday Boomeraction block, which also includes DC Comics’ animated series Justice League Unlimited (11p) and The Batman (11:30p).  Teen Titans originally launched on Cartoon Network in 2003.

Kids coming together to foster change in their neighborhoods, schools and among their friends are celebrated in the Black History Month, 2009, special Nick News with Linda Ellerbee We Shall Not Be Moved, premiering Sunday, February 8 at 9p on Nickelodeon.

The MoonScoop Group’s Taffy Entertainment inks deals for two of its newest animated TV series with broadcasters across Spain.  Cartoon Network Spain picks up all three seasons of Titeuf (250×7), which is based on the comic book series of the same name, while TV Catalunya (65×7) also acquires broadcast rights to the new preschool series Ava Riko Teo, which is based on the works of French author/artist Mila Boutan.

Connection III Entertainment announced at NATPE that its series Made in Hollywood and sister series Made in Hollywood: Teen Edition have both been sold to the CBS Television Stations (CTS) group for the 2009/10 season.  The upcoming fourth season of Made in Hollywood: Teen Edition, an FCC Friendly, Educational/Informational (E/I) series aimed at tweens/teens 13-16, has been acquired by CBS O&O stations including LA, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, Detroit, Tampa, Seattle, Miami, Sacramento, Pittsburgh and Norfolk for the series’ 4th season in 2009-10.

Also from NATPE … Indie TV production and broadcast syndication company, Steve Rotfeld Productions signs renewals for three of its weekly FCC-friendly, children’s E/I series for fall 2009. Wild About Animals and Awesome Adventures are both cleared in 90% of the U.S. including the FOX O&O Station Group; Whaddyado is cleared in 85% of the US including the CBS Television Stations group for its CW and MyNetworkTV affiliates.
