Cynopsis: Kids!
01/14/10
Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 14, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Nintendo of America and Netflix ink a deal to allow Netflix members to instantly stream movies/TV episodes on their TVs via their Nintendo Wii consoles beginning this spring in the US. This deal has been rumored since the fall and follows Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s Playstation 3, both of which have had similar streaming deals with Netflix (in addition to their own movie service stores) since fall 2008 and fall 2009 respectively. The Nintendo Wii console does not play Blu-ray discs or DVDs. To stream content from Netflix, Wii owners will need a Netflix instant-streaming disc for their console, which will be available at no additional cost to Netflix subscribers ( www.netflix.com/Wii ).
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Ivan Reitman will indeed return to direct Ghostbusters 3, per MTV. Reitman, who directed the first two Ghostbusters movies in 1984 and 1989, added that screenwriting duo Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (they penned Year One) are at work on a second draft of the script. No, he gave nothing on the way of what actually happens in the new story and he wouldn’t confirm any plot related rumors, but did add, “There’s some very cool things in the new draft,” and that he hopes to begin shooting the movie in the next year. According to recent comments made by creator/producer/star Harold Ramis, the new Ghostbusters movie could be ready for a 2011 release.
MORE KIDS STUFF
PBS made its presentation yesterday at the Television Critics Association press tour, which included news about the launch of new kid-targeted science education-centric game, Lifeboat To Mars, on PBSKidsGo.org ( www.pbskidsgo.org/lifeboat). Designed by Red Hill Studios and PBS Kids Go! in collaboration with educational researchers and funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the game is set in the year 2041 and challenges kids to rebuild a virtual ecosystem in outer space, whereby they learn standards-based biology concepts, and save the lifeboat mission. Lifeboat To Mars features 40+ game levels, which eventually leading kids to the chance to mod their own version of the game that they can then share with others.
Additionally, PBS credits the December 2009 launch of the PBS Kids video player ( www.pbskidsgo.org/video) helped drive kids to watch 87.5+ million video streams across PBSKids.org and PBSKidsGo.org last month, the highest total ever for the sites.
Boomerang hosts a Scooby-Doo marathon (7.5 hour) featuring ten movies from Hanna-Barber’s The New Scooby-Doo Movies, the second animated series 1972-74, from 12noon on Monday, January 18. The New Scooby-Doo Movies, which included some hour-long episodes, features an array of celebrities from the day (in their animated form of course) including Sonny and Cher, The Harlem Globetrotters and Phyllis Diller, fictional characters like Jeannie, as well as Hanna-Barbera and other animated characters such as Josie and the Pussycats and Batman and Robin.
The second season of The Electric Company premieres on January 25, 2010 on PBS Kids Go! (check local listings). The new season Sesame Workshop’s The Electric Company features a host of celebrity guests such as the Dwight Howard (NBA, Orlando Magic/Center), John Leguizamo, LL Cool J, Sherrie Shepard, Kyle Massey, Monique Coleman and Samantha Bee, among others.
Decode Enterprises enters into a deal for a package of about 200×30 of programming in Italy with preschool channel JimJam. Beginning this month, JimJam’s Italian feed lineup will feature new shows including all three seasons of Bo on the Go and Poko, as well as all seasons of Mighty Jungle, all of which are produced by DHK subsidiary Halifax Film. Other shows included under the pact are Adastra Creative’s Grandpa in My Pocket and the first season of Martha Speaks, a co-production between DHX’s Studio B Productions and WGBH Boston.
