Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 11, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The Jim Henson Company has acquired the rights to The Skrumps, the unique vinyl characters created by toy designer John Chandler and his company Splashdown Toys and featured as a line of collectible figures and illustrated storybooks.  Henson’s plans for The Skrumps include launching an animated adaptation of the property across multiple platforms, merchandising and publishing.  Henson has developed the characters with puppeteers using the Henson Digital Performance Studio, which CG characters to be performed by puppeteers in real-time.  This week also marks the exclusive launch of The Skrumps on Yahoo! Kids, where for a limited time folks can learn about the characters, send e-cards, download coloring pages and see the world premiere of their rock video, directed by Brian Henson.  The Skrumps project will be executive produced by Brian Henson, Lisa Henson, John Chandler and Craig Bartlett; Bartlett will also serve as a writer on the project.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon’s new live-action comedy series The Naked Brothers Band launches on TEENick with a 90-minute movie, Saturday, January 27 at 8p.  The show comes from creator/executive producer/writer/director Polly Draper and revolves around twin brothers, Draper’s real-life musician/songwriters sons Nat and Alex Wolff, and their successful rock band.  The show takes up residence in its regular time period beginning Saturday, February 3, 8:30-9p.  Also featured on the show, as the twins’ musically-challenged dad, is Nat and Alex’s real-life dad and Draper’s husband jazz musician/composer Michael Wolff, who doubles behind the scenes as the music supervisor/co-executive producer on the show.  Albie Hecht is executive producer in association with Nickelodeon Television.  Naked Brothers Band – The Movie, which features a host of celebrity cameos including Uma Thurman, Tony Shalhoub and the cast of ThirtySomething, will be released on DVD in spring 2007 and will include an exclusive CD sampler with music from the movie.

The lives of twenty 7-12 year-olds are documented in first-person/user-generated digital videos on My Life As A Child, The Learning Channel’s new six-episode series bowing Monday, February 26, at 7p. Each episode offers a look into the world of American kids and the various issues that they face, from the some of the age-old standards such as fighting with parents, teasing/bullying, struggling with school work and playing sports, to the more modern day experiences like living in different types of blended family, growing up with gay parents and families where parents have chosen to educate their kids at home rather than send them to public schools.  The 20 kids in the series were selected from a field of 400 + kids who submitted videos about their lives.  Online at TLC.com, the kids featured in the TV series will talk about their experiences, and offer tips and insights to kids on how to make their very own videos.  My Life As A Child is produced for TLC by BBC Productions.

This spring Animal Planet will cover the actual arrival of spring in the US with a special six-week event, and watch as an orphaned baby otter is cared for by humans and returned to the wild.

  • Spring Watch USA bows Saturday, April 14, 2007, at 8p. Each 1-hour episode of the six-week series will be filmed just prior to broadcast every week in order to record the spring as it unfolds in near real time.  Hosted by Jeff Corwin and Vanessa Garnick, the series follows the stories of the animals that herald the coming of spring, through cameras in nests, caves and so on, over six weeks.  The also includes reports from correspondents including Philippe Cousteau and David Mizejewski.  The network with its partner The National Wildlife Federation will host an online/digital community and outreach platform that observes and logs data (e.g. interactive map, user generated video blogs tacking spring, a bird watching guide and message board with experts) over the course the program. Spring Watch USA is produced by Painless Productions for Animal Planet.
  • Saving Grace follows Philippa Forrester and wildlife cameraman husband Charlie Hamilton James, who live in Bristol, England, as they care for an abandoned baby otter, Grace, and work to rehabilitate and help her return her family in the wild.  Saving Grace premieres with a 30-minute special on Friday, March 2, 2007.  Beginning Monday, March 5, AnimalPlanet.com and AnimalPlanetBeyond.com debut two 5-minute webisodes following Grace’s story.  Every weekday thereafter in March, AnimalPlanet.com will feature additional five-minute webisodes for a total of 20 online segments.  A second 30-minute special, completing Grace’s recovery and return to the wild, will bow on the network Friday, March 30.  Saving Grace is produced by Halcyon Media.

Decode Entertainment has inked a deal with Canada’s YTV for Gizmo, a new animated series.  Currently in production, Gizmo (26 22-minute eps or 52 11-minute eps) is a sci-fi comedy that follows the adventures of a dysfunctional crew of alien robots that wind up in the backyard of human twins when their ship crashes.  The series was developed by Singapore’s Scrawl Studios and the Media Development Authority of Singapore in co-production with Decode, YTV and Agogo Entertainment Ltd., a Hong Kong-based animation company.  Decode holds the worldwide distribution rights for Gizmo, which is slated for delivery in fall 2007.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Beth Goss has been appointed EVP/Ad Sales, Marketing and Enterprises, Cartoon Network.  She will be based in NY and will report to David Levy, President/Turner Entertainment Ad Sales and President/Turner Sports.  Reporting to Goss under the new structure are John O’Hara, SVP and GSM, Phyllis Ehrlich, SVP/Ad Sales Promotions and Marketing, and John Friend, SVP/Cartoon Network Enterprises.  Goss joins Turner from Universal Pictures where she spent the last seven years in a range of executive marketing and licensing roles, most recently as EVP, Consumer Products Group.  She is also credited with creating the Universal Mobile entertainment unit.  Previously she toiled for Polygram Films, Polygram Filmed Entertainment and DDB Needham.
