Cynopsis: Kids!

2/08/07

Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 8, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

CondeNet, the digital arm of CondeNast, has launched Flip.com a new free online social network targeted to teen girls ( www.flip.com) .  Designed to provide teen girls a place to express themselves creatively and meet-up with one another online, Flip.com features a series of interactive tools including what they call Flipbooks, which are customizable, multimedia scrapbooks that allow users to upload their own photos, music, and videos as well as accessorize with online stickers, wallpaper, animations and the like.  Additionally, Flip users can draw, write, add a sound track, rotate and size elements, add pages and select page transitions.  Aside from user created content, CondeNet has posted four channels that focus on key teen girl topics: My Life; Entertainment; Style; and The World.  At launch the initial advertisers for Flip include Clean & Clear, Nike, Nordstrom, PacSun, and Vera Wang Princess.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie will be rendered in clay for a new series.  Sesame Workshop has teamed with Germany’s NDR and Kika, and UK Five’s preschool block Milkshake, to produce two seasons of a claymation series called The Adventures of Bert and Ernie.  Each season includes 26 x 5-minute episodes during which Bert and Ernie will use their imaginations to travel into situations and stories.  Season one will be available in March 2008, with season two following a year later in March 2009. Italy’s Misseri Studio, will animate the stories, which qualify as European content.  Broadcasters ABC (Australia), Cartoon Network India, DR-TV (Denmark), Disney Asia, Disney Spain, HOP (Israel), NPS/Zeppelin (Netherlands), NRK (Norway), and SVT (Sweden) have already inked pre-sale deals for the series.

Nickelodeon unveiled its first international development slate, which includes five projects the company will co-develop in partnership with international producers and co-creators:

  • Oasis – Non-verbal animated series of seven, one-minute shorts that revolves around the antics of five squash and stretch animal characters searching for their dream oasis in the desert.  Created by Korea’s Tuba Entertainment and co-produced by Nickelodeon, France’s TF1 and TeamTo. Also in the works is a long-form series bible and pilot script.
  • Hiro – Japanese-inspired series of five, one-minute shorts about a mischievous snowboarder that hurriedly makes his way to the bottom of the hill without getting caught by the Ranger.  Hiro is created by Italy’s Alessandro Ferrari.
  • Noodles! – A colorful animated project that features Asian-inspired imagery, about a spirited young girl and her friends a giant panda, potbellied pig, flightless dragon and wannabe ninja monkey.  From Nickelodeon in partnership with TV Loonland, Noodles is co-created by Séverine Gauhtier, Thomas Labourot and Christian Lerolle.
  • Bacon and Bunk – What happens when two Billy goats must share a sardine can shaped (and sized) apartment in a flophouse?  Created by Luke Brookshier and Debbie Cone and co-developed with Nickelodeon, YTV and TFI.
  • Super Charlie and Super Lauren – Animated project revolves around a brother and sister as they fight with one another and sometimes the rest of the world.  Based on a short animated film by the UK-based Brothers McLeod, who are further developing this project.
  • Additionally, work continues on three projects announced last year that are being developed with international partners, DOMO-kun, Akihabara@deep and Fortunatto.

Studio B Productions has entered into a development deal with YTV for the animated series Look What My Sister Dragged In.  Targeted to K6-11, Studio B will produce 52 x 11′ episodes of the series, which follows the adventures of Coop, a nice kid who’s life is thrown off kilter when his sister brings home a little hairless Kat, a weird creature of mysterious origin.  The problem?  Kat is out to destroy Coop.  Rob Boutillier created the series.
