Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 5, 2009, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premiere:
History: Gangland at 9p

Yesterday the House approved a bill to move the DTV transition date firmly to June 12, 2009. The final tally was 264 in favor – 158 against. The bill also allows the approximately two million households with expired DTV-to-analog converter box coupons to reapply for them. The DTV delay bill had the support of major broadcast networks including ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX as well as Verizon, AT&T and numerous public safety organizations.

ABC acquired the Media Rights Capital comedy Surviving Suburbia, headlined by Bob Saget, and will place it on Mondays following Dancing with the Stars beginning April 6 at 930p. With 13 episodes already produced, Surviving Suburbia was originally planned to be part of The CW’s Sunday night block. The sitcom replaces Samantha Who? which moves to Thursdays.

Tribune Broadcasting will merge its 24-hour cable news station, CLTV with WGN-TV, moving CLTV’s entire business and television operations to WGN-TV’s facility this summer. The two news operations will work together in one newsroom, using one pool of reporters and photographers, bringing news content to both stations. CLTV will continue to deliver a variety of specialty programs including Garrard McClendon Live, Metromix, Sports Page, Homes Plus and Living Healthy Chicago.

Time Warner Cable is eliminating 1,250 employees across the U.S. in a major restructuring move according to TWC COO Landel Hobbs. This new restructuring step follows one last year in TWC’s field operations resulting in 500 jobs cuts throughout the country. These latest layoffs represent less than 3% of TWC’s total workforce, yet are expected to save the company approximately $90 million.

In related news, Time Warner cited a $16 billion loss due to a large write-down revealed last month based on the decreasing value of America Online, magazine division Time Inc., as well as Time Warner Cable which will be spun off to shareholders. Time Warner did have some good news as the company’s cable networks including HBO, TNT, TBS and CNN all posted a +9% revenue increase in fourth quarter 2009.

BBC America announced the launch of three sci-fi drama series later this year:

  • Being Human – three twentysomethings lead double lives as a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost. Six one-hour episodes are a co-production of Touchpaper Television and BBC America for the BBC and distributed by RDF Rights, part of the RDF Media Group.
  • Survivors – acquired by BBC America, about the aftermath following a deadly virus wiping out 99% of the human race. One 90m episode/five 60m episodes; a BBC production distributed by BBC Worldwide.
  • Primeval returns with zoologist Nick Cutter who discovers prehistoric creatures existing today. Ten 60m episodes from Impossible Pictures for ITV and distributed by BBC Worldwide.

Gospel Music Channel will debut the new original series Four: Southern Gospel’s Best on February 27 at 10p. The weekly show highlights Southern Gospel Quartets with performances from The Dove Brothers Quartet, The Hoppers, The Kingdom Heirs and Brian Free & Assurance. The series airs Wednesdays at 10p.

Changes come to the Primetime Emmy Awards as the Board of Governors of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences voted to increase the number of nominees from five to six in the following categories: Outstanding Comedy and Drama Series programs, Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress in a Comedy or Drama Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress in a Comedy and Drama Series. Additionally, the Television Academy Governors voted to eliminate the two-phase nominating process in the series and performance categories. That means the voting for the Drama and Comedy Series programs will be determined by the whole Television Academy membership; nominees in the Drama and Comedy Series performer categories will be voted on by the Performer Peer Group.

Based on recently released Nielsen Live+7 data, SCI FI Channel’s premiere of Battlestar Galactica on January 16, delivered 1.8 million A18-49 viewers, 1.9 million A25-54 viewers and 2.8 million total viewers. This final season of Battlestar Galactica airs Fridays at 10p on SCI FI.

VH1 reported its 90m premiere of I Love Money 2 on Monday night at 9p posted a 1.3 rating among A18-49 and 2.3 million total viewers. On the same night at 1030p, For the Love of Ray J opened and held steady with a 1.3 A18-49 rating and increased it’s lead-in among Total Viewers to 2.4 million.

Viewers will have casting input for Bravo’s new competition series The Fashion Show by voting for the final professional designer to join the competition. From now until February 13, visit to vote on the two remaining finalists, Andrew from Los Angeles or Elise from Chicago. The Fashion Show launches later this year and is produced by 3 Ball Productions.

Greg’s career started at Telerep followed by station management in various markets including Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Sacramento, New Haven, New York and Dayton. CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Job cuts and poorer-than expected earning continue to mount in the tech and digital media spaces. Panasonic was the latest electronics manufacturer forced to downwardly revise its full-year earnings outlook, now projecting a net loss of 380 billion yen or $4.2 billion for the year ending March 31. The world’s leading maker of plasma televisions will cut 15,000 jobs. Time Warner reported a $16 billion Q4 loss due to a more than $24 billion in write-downs at its cable, publishing and AOL divisions, despite an 8.7% increase in revenue. The company said it will lay off 1,250 additional workers over the next few weeks. Push has come to shove in terms of making a decision regarding the future of AOL, revenue at which dropped to $968 million from $1.25 billion – despite higher page views and greater usage. During the company’s earnings call, CEO Jeff Bewkes claimed that Google is demanding that it either spin off AOL as separate entity or buy Google’s 5% stake in the company at fair market value. Google was forced to write down its $1 billion investment in AOL by nearly $750 million.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.
