12/08/05 Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 8, 2005, and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing. NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT With the success of the Real D Cinema 3-D version of Chicken Little, Disney has committed to release its new animated feature Meet the Robinsons in Real D Cinema in December 2006. Real D is the technology used to present features in 3-D at movie theaters, and is currently available in 89 theaters in the US, Canada and Mexico. Real D has also announced plans to install its technology in two movie screens in Japan in time for the December 23rd Japanese release of Chicken Little. In Real D Cinema equipped screens, Chicken Little had earned $7m through Thanksgiving weekend. Earlier this year, Columbia Pictures solidified plans to release its movie Monster House in Real D Cinema, set to release July 21, 2006. Kids in Cambodia will be able to watch Sesame Street, or as they will know it Sabai Sabai Sesame (Happy Happy Sesame), when the series begins airing there on Phnom Pehn’s Apsara TV-11 as of December 13. The specially adapted Cambodian version of the series will air in Khmer, the predominant language of Cambodia, two times a week and will feature animation, mini documentaries and of course Muppet character segments. Sabai Sabai Sesame is produced by Educational Television Cambodia (ETC), a project of World Education, with the support of major funding from the US Embassy in Phnom Penh. Fortitude Entertainment Group and India-based animation house Maya Entertainment (financed by Intel) have come together to form a joint venture named Fortitude Maya. The new partners will work to develop computer animators to create TV and features. As part of the deal, Fortitude will be able to tap into 150 of Maya’s animators. One of the first projects will be an animated Noah’s Aardvark feature, scripted by Michael Mauer. Fortitude will be the financial backer for the $40-million film. Several daytime pre-school productions are also in the works. Maya Entertainment is based in Mumbai and was runs forty schools for animators. Disney has tapped Jay Wolpert to pen the computer animated feature film adaptation of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s novel, Peter and the Starcatchers (Hyperion), according to the Hollywood Reporter. The book focuses on an orphaned boy named Peter, who finds his way as a stow-away on to a merchant ship in order to escape being forced into a life of servitude. On board Peter finds a trunk filled with starstuff. MORE KIDS STUFF Del Rey Manga, an imprint of Random House Publishing Group, has acquired Gundam Seed Destiny from Kodansha Ltd., a Japanese trade book and magazine publisher, with original art by Masatsugu Iwase and story by Hajime Yatate and Yoshiyuki Tomino. New to the Gundam franchise, Gundam Seed Destiny is a spin-off from Del Rey’s 5-volume Gundam Seed series. Targeted to teens 13+, the first volume of Gundam Seed Destiny will be published in July 2006. Washington D.C.’s National Children’s Museum is looking for a sponsor(s) for its Kid’s Extravalooza 2006 free concert event, tentatively scheduled for June 2006. The family centric concert draws kids and their families from the DC metropolitan area and has previously featured performances by Smash Mouth and Kelly Clarkson. You may be scratching your head and thinking you have never been to The National Children’s Museum, and possibly never heard of it. Well, if you haven’t … you will. In August 2004 the Capital Children’s Museum in Washington DC closed in order to begin developing and planning for a new museum, The National Children’s Museum, which is slated to open in June 2008. MARKETING/LICENSING Indiagames, a mobile content publisher, developer and distributor, has inked an exclusive licensing agreement with Electronic Arts to deliver mobile games to consumers via multiple carriers in India. Indiagames is majority-owned by Tom Online, a wireless internet company in China. Its other investors include Macromedia Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc. The first EA games to be released by Indiagames will include Need for Speed Underground 2, Need for Speed Most Wanted, NBA Live 06, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06, EA Sports FIFA 06, FIFA Street 2, Madden NFL 06, SimCity and The Sims 2. Next year Discovery Kids and Subway will launch a new marketing and advertising promotional program that will run January 2-July 9, 2006. Comprised of three themed promotional windows, the program ties into Subway’s marketing initiative to encourage kids to be active and eat well. This first promotion is built around Discovery Kids’ live action series Endurance. Kids will get Discovery Kids branded items (wrist bands, cell phone tags, stickers) in Subway Kids’ Pak Meals at participating Subway stores. Additionally, they can go online and play Got the Endurance?, and enter a sweepstakes accessible via http://subwaykids.com . The other two promotional windows will also be tied to the Discovery Kids brand and will encompass in-store, on-air and online elements, all aimed at helping kids make active and healthy lifestyle choices. Subway will support the promotions with TV spots on Discovery Kids channel and Discovery Kids Saturday mornings on NBC. Jakks Pacific, Inc. has signed a deal with Silver Lining Productions, Ltd., for the properties Olivia and Timothy Goes to School. This brings two additional preschool properties to Jakks Pacific’s new Plug & Play, Tell-A-Story product line. Jakks Pacific plans to launch the Olivia and Timothy Tell-A-Story systems for spring 2006. The Olivia products are based on the Olivia books from author/illustrator Ian Falconer, while Timothy Goes to School is based on the book by author/illustrator Rosemary Wells. STONE SOUP Sony Computer Entertainment has acquired game developer Guerrilla Games as part of its initiative to expand its development capability as part of Worldwide Studios. Based in the Netherlands, Guerrilla is the developer of the PS2 game Killzone (ESRB rating Mature), and is currently working on a new version of the game for the forthcoming PS3 as well as a version for the PSP. Guerrilla singed an exclusive development deal with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe in March 2004. Alloy, Inc’s Board of Directors has approved the spin-off its wholly-owned subsidiary, Delia*s, Inc., which currently operates Alloy’s merchandising business. Delia*s is a direct marketing and retail store that includes the Delia*s, Alloy, and CCS brands and sells apparel/accessories/footwear/room furnishings/action sports equipment directly to teens through catalogs, websites and retail stores. Alloy is a marketing and retail company targeted primarily to teens. Premise Inc. and Powerline6 Design have joined together to launch a one-stop-shop that provides integrated youth culture brand development, product design and marketing services. Premise will lead business development, including marketing strategy and execution, while Powerline6 Design will manage creative services, including product branding, design and development. Under the strategic partnership Powerline6 Design owner and professor of design at Art Center College of Design, William “Chip” Howes, Jr. will serve as Creative Director/Premise. Gregg Witt will retain his position as Managing Partner/Premise. Premise also operates the Athlete Alliance Network, which provides access to professional and amateur action sports athletes/personalities who can test and endorse products. Powerline6 Design runs a retail style lab, where concepts are developed and test marketed for clients’ products. EXECUTIVE MOVES BKN International AG, distributor and marketer of animated TV series, has put together the creative team to produce its new tween targeted animated series Dork Hunters from Outer Space, currently slated for delivery in fall 2006. The creative producing team includes: Rob Hughes (Family Guy, SpongeBob, Hey Arnold etc) will serve as Supervising Director; Kurt Dumas (American Dad, Family Guy Hey Arnold) joins as Director of Storyboards; Gary McCarver (King of the Hill, Cat Dog) as Director of Timing; and the series Story Editor is Mark Palmer (Wild Thornberry’s, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, Xiaolin Showdown & Kim Possible). BKN is producing this series with ST Animation, a Singapore-based animation studio. Cartoon Network Enterprises continues to expand its global consumer products team with the addition of Rick Blanco as Director/Hardlines Design; Deena Boykin, as Sr. Director/Retail Development; and Daria Cronin as Director/Softlines. As Director/Hardlines Design, Blanco will be based in Burbank and report to Cynthia Rapp, VP/Creative Director, CNE. He will work with Rapp on creative product development. Blanco joins CNE from Mattel, Inc. where he was most recently Sr. Creative Manager/Mattel Brands Consumer Products. Boykin and Cronin will be based in NY will both report to Christina Miller, VP/US Consumer Products. In their new roles Boykin and Cronin will work with Miller on the commercial development of Cartoon Network brands into consumer product franchises. Miller joined CNE in September from HIT Entertainment. Most recently Boykin was Sr. Director/Retail Development, Nickelodeon Consumer Products. Prior to joining CNE, Cronin was Director/Soft Goods Hit Entertainment. Wade Davis has been appointed SVP/Mergers & Acquisitions for new Viacom, following the separation of the company into two publicly traded companies. Davis reports to Michael J. Dolan, EVP/CFO, Viacom. He is responsible for identifying potential mergers and acquisitions, managing new Viacom’s interactions with the banking and investment communities on strategic transactions, and leading the execution of any deals. Prior to joining Viacom, Davis spent 10+ yrs as an investment banker in the technology and media sectors. Davis was formerly a Managing Director/Co-Head, Investment Banking and Head of Mergers & Acquisitions, ThinkEquity Partners.
