Cynopsis: Kids!

12/17/09

Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 17, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Roy E. Disney, the son and nephew of The Walt Disney Company co-founders Roy O. Disney and Walt Disney, respectively, passed away yesterday after a yearlong battle with stomach cancer.  He was 79.  Roy E. Disney joined the Disney Company in 1953 and worked there 56+ years, eventually serving as Vice Chairman of its board of directors and chairman of Disney Animation from 1984-2003.  Most recently he held the title of director emeritus and consultant.  As the head of Disney Animation, Mr. Disney is credited with guiding the studio into a new golden age of animation with feature films such as The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), and The Lion King (1994).  Roy E. Disney was a strong defender of the company and its direction, rallying shareholders not once but twice in a rebellion against the company and its board when he and others believed that Disney had lost its bearings.  The first revolt was in 1984 when he fought to have Ron Miller (Walt’s son-in-law) removed, and again in 2003-5 when he battled to have Michael Eisner ousted.  Disney helped to bring Eisner into the company following Miller’s exit.  Eisner led the company together with Frank Wells until 1994 when Wells died.  In 1978, Disney and his long-time friend and also a fellow Disney board member Stanley Gold founded Shamrock Holdings, a wholly owned family investment company.  An award winning producer, Mr. Disney was also an avid competitive sailor and a philanthropist.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Japan’s Studio Ghibli is adapting author Mary Norton’s 1952 classic kid’s book, The Borrowers, as an animated feature film, per Variety.  Directed by animator Hiromasa Yonebayashi under the supervision of the great Hayao Miyazaki, who is also one of the heads of the studio, the movie is titled Karigurashi no Arrietty (Arrietty Borrows Everything).  The movie is set for a summer 2010 release with Toho serving as distributor.  Studio Ghibli is known for its animated features including Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and My Neighbor Totoro among others.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The second season of Sesame Workshop‘s series The Electric Company (12×30) is set to premiere January 25, 2010 on PBS Kids Go (check local listings).  Targeted to K6-9, the new season of The Electric Company, which airs five days a week, will begin with a special three-episode recurring role by Kyle Massey (Cory in the House), playing Keith’s cousin PJ.  Following the debut week, new episodes will bow each Friday.  The new season will also feature celebrity appearances by NBA player Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic/center), John Leguizamo, LL Cool J, and Sherrie Shephard among others.  Season two of The Electric Company is made possible by the support of American Greetings and Beaches Resorts.  The series is part of PBS Kids Raising Readers national literacy initiative, which focuses on using public media to improve reading skills of K2-8, particularly for kids from low-income families.

Program Partners launches the teen-targeted TV series Edgemont in syndication in 85+% of US households beginning January 18, 2010.  The half-hour, live-action drama/educational series from Omni Film was originally produced for public broadcaster, CBC (Canada).  Edgemont follows the social/emotional/ethical ups and downs of a group of suburban high school students.  The series is supported with online study materials, based on episodes of the show, for use by parents and educators.  Edgemont cast includes Kristen Kreuk (Smallville), Jessica Lucas (the new Melrose Place), Grace Park (Battlestar Galactica) and Dominic Zamprogna (General Hospital).  Distributed by PPI Releasing, a new Program Partners affiliated company, Edgemont will premiere in the US on Tribune, Newport, Acme, Lockwood, Granite and the CW+ stations.  Creative Television Marketing will serve as the ad sales representative for both the 30: and 10: advertising inventory.  Most broadcasters are expected to use this series to meet E/I programming requirements.

Astral Media’s Playhouse Disney (Canada) hosts Snow Day Saturday this Saturday, December 19 from 6a.  The preschool programming event features the premiere of Ha Ha Holidays from season two of Imagination Movers (7:30a), as well as new episodes of Special Agent Oso and Strawberry Shortcake, and many snow and holiday-themed episodes of its other regular series.  Imagination Movers airs regularly Sundays at 7:30a.

Skywriter Media and Entertainment Group enter into a deal with E1 Entertainment that will see kid-aimed animated series The Raccoons, Season One available on iTunes Canada beginning this week.  The Raccoons, which follows the adventures of Bert Raccoon and his pals from the Evergreen Forest, the series is produced by Evergreen Raccoons Marketing, and is distributed by Skywriter Media and Entertainment Group.

Beyond Distribution inks deals across Asia for kid-targeted programming: Kid Detectives (52×14 or 26×30), which provides viewers with hands-on forensic skills to solve mystery, is acquired by OKTO (Singapore); the mess science-centric game series Lab Rats Challenge (65×30) is picked up by Turner Entertainment Networks Asia.

Smart Kids Group debuts Live at the Hive, a new social networking community targeted to kids/tweens and their parents.  The bee hive-themed community features Bert the Bee and other characters that lead users through Live at the Hive, which includes a range of areas  or in this case neighborhood hives like The Healthy Hive, The Travel Hive, and The Safety Hive among others.  Safety is a key component of this social network.  So, it will include various features such as monthly reports to parents that show where their kids have visited and who they have been interacting with on the site.

MARKETING/LICENSING

American Greetings Properties (AGP) introduces the Care Bears to Japan with the new addition, Sweet Sakura Bear.  Designed to reflect Japanese values and symbols, Sweet Sakura Bear is a shy and modest bear that features a heart-shaped cherry blossom (or sakura) on her belly.  Sweet Sakura Bear will be available exclusively in Japan in 2010.  AGP’s Care Bears partners in Japan include licensing agents Mindworks and Medialink throughout the rest of Asia.

Scholastic Storybook Treasures commemorates Black History Month and Martin Luther King, Jr. with the release of the new DVD, March On! The Day My Brother Martin Changed the World … and More Stories About African American History, on January 12, 2010.  The DVD features Dr. Christine King Ferris’ account of the day that her brother delivered his I Have a Dream Speech in during the March on Washington in 1963.  The release also includes three other stories based on King’s life, each adapted from the kid’s books: Martin’s Big Words (adapted from the book by Doreen Rapport, illustrated by Michael Collier); Rosa (written/narrated by Nikki Giovanni, illustrations by Michael Sporn); Henry’s Freedom Box: A True Story from the Underground Railroad (based on the book by Ellen Levine, illustrated by Kadir Nelson).  The DVD also includes narration by actors Lynn Whitfield, Michael Clark Duncan among others.

And a quick housekeeping note — after this Friday, Cynopsis will be off for the holiday, returning January 4, 2010.  With that said, we will continue to post information on the home page of our website www.cynopsis.com, where we have just begun posting links to the releases we did not include within the emailed edition.  That will continue thru our break.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:   This classic toy was originally designed to grab a share of the toy car market. When originally brought to market in 1968, there were just 16 models, with 11 of those designed by Harry Bentley Bradley.  What was this wonderful toy line named?   HOT WHEELS  Kudos to: Brad Stern/Floral Park; Tony Ferranti-Hasbro/Warwick; Howard Rosenstein-Meredith Video Solutions/NY; LeNea Ricks-KIDK/Idaho Falls; Squirrel Rippley-Dark Horse Media/Tucson; Chip Beaman-Soundelux Design Music Group/Hollywood; Richard Quan-Imaginary Time/San Francisco; Pat Brady-CESD/LA; Katharine Heintz PhD-Santa Clara University/PST

Today’s Trivia Question – last classic toy question of 2009:    This boardgame was originally developed in 1860 by Milton Bradley, and originally titled The Checkered Game of Life.  It was the first boardgame Bradley ever developed.  Back then, he was able to sell 45,000 copies.  The game was played with a six-sided top instead of dice, and the boardgame itself looked very similar to a checkboard.  The now “classic” game was reintroduced 100 years later in 1960, and came with an endorsement from Art Linkletter. The board itself was completely redesigned by Reuben Klamer. The game is updated every few years to mirror the times, and numerous versions have been created including Pirates of the Caribbean version, SpongeBob SquarePants version and even a Family Guy version.  What is this game?   (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
