Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 11, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Fans of Nickelodeon‘s animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender have been awaiting news on casting for M. Night Shyamalan‘s live-action movie adaptation of the show … and today is that day. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Shyamalan cast at least some of the characters for the movie, which is titled The Last Airbender. At an open casting call in Texas Shyamalan founds his Aang (the 12-yr-old star of the show) in karate star Noah Ringer, at. Additionally, the director has reportedly offered Jackson Rathbone (Twilight) the part of Sokka, and Nicola Peltz (Deck the Halls) the role of Katara (Sokka’s sister), with singer Jesse McCartney in negotiations to play the evil Zuko. Paramount will release The Last Airbender on July 2, 2010.
A new director for the next Twilight movies? Though unconfirmed, word is that Summit Entertainment has an offer out to writer/director/producer Chris Weitz (Golden Compass, among others) to helm the second Twilight movie, New Moon, and maybe even the third movie, Eclipse, according to DeadlineHollywood.com. It Summit Entertainment announced last week that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke would not return to direct New Moon due to scheduling issues. The movie is currently slated for release in November 2009.
Simon, Alvin and Theodore return to the big screen with Betty Thomas directing them in Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel, the follow-up to the Fox 2000 and Regency CGI animated feature Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007), per THR. The movie is set for a Christmas Day 2009 release.
Evan Rachel Wood has been cast as Mary Jane, Peter Parker’s girl friend in Julie Taymor‘s Broadway show, Spider-Man: The Musical, per an interview with IESB.net. Based on Marvel’s Spider-Man and featuring music and lyrics by U2’s Bono and The Edge, the musical is set to go into rehearsals in June 2009 and make its way to Broadway in the first part of 2010. And who will take on the role of Spidey/Peter? Still no definitive word, though when asked during the interview about the rumor that it might be Jim Sturgess, who co-starred with her in the Taymor directed movie Across the Universe, Wood said that they are, “still trying to convince him.”
MORE KIDS STUFF
The N premieres its new documentary, Degrassi In Ecuador, on Friday, December 19 at 9p. The half-hour special features members of the cast of Degrassi: The Next Generation as they travel to Ecuador where, along with the non-profit Free the Children, they work to restore a local school and employ a water filtration system for a farming community in need there.
Kids’ CBC (Canada) picks up season two of the preschool series Busytown Mysteries (Hurray For Huckle!) from Cookie Jar Entertainment. Based on the books by Richard Scarry, Kids’ CBC will debut the second season of the show in 2009.
The trailer for Dragonball Evolution, Fox‘s live-action version of the Dragon Ball anime and manga series, is now available online on a range of sites including movies.ign.com, YouTube, and many others. Fox will release Dragonball Evolution on April 8, 2009 (no rating yet for the movie).
Tween/teen-targeted virtual world Habbo launched a new kind of currency for its virtual hotel. In addition to using “credits” to purchase clothes, furniture and the like, the site’s 10 million users can now use “pixels” to buy or rent other items at a discount. The site also introduced some new special effects to spruce up virtual rooms and avatars.
Todobebe, Inc., is launching its website www.embarazo.com (embarazo means “pregnancy” in English), which will offer pregnancy information and original content in Spanish.
Oasis International heads to Asian Television Forum this week where it will offer several of E1’s entertainment content for distribution, including some family-targeted content:
- Stuntdawgs (13×30) – featuring stuntman Peter Kent (he was Arnold Schwarzenegger’s stunt double), the series looks at the world of movie stunts.
- Finn on the Fly (100 minutes) – a family comedy about friendship, loyalty and instincts.
- Animal Exploration With Jarod Miller (46×30) – up close and personal with the animal kingdom.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Kidrobot, creator and retailer of limited edition art toys, apparel and accessories will open its first ever store-gallery overseas at Selfridges Oxford Street, London. From January 22 to February 21, 2009, the Selfridges Concept Store, located in The Wonder Room, will be transformed into the everything Kidrobot, including through window displays, a collection of limited edition merchandise, exclusive new releases, and a launch party for Kidrobot’s Ye Olde English Dunny Series.

Even Santa has taken to web videos. Parents and kids can now reach Santa on WiredSanta.com, a new interactive video streaming site where kids can post letters directly to Kris Kringle on the web. Vancouver-based Out To See Entertainment is producing a new video each day from Santa’s workshop, acknowledging some of the kids who write in and encouraging adults to contribute to the venture. Partial proceeds go to inner city literacy outreach program People of Many.
