Cynopsis: Kids!

12/10/09

Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 10, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Unable to fulfill its debts TV-Loonland AG files in Germany for insolvency.  In doing so the insolvency court has put the company under preliminary administration with an attorney appointed as the administrator.  In a statement TV-Loonland, which has been in financial straits for the last year or more, points to its shareholders as the reason for the filing, “Due to the fact that the company’s shareholders repeatedly refused approval of share consolidation on November 19, 2008 and November 26, 2009, TV-Loonland was not able to raise cash through an equity injection.  Therefore the company cannot clear all debts on the respective due dates.”  Additionally, TV-Loonland announced the appointment of Michael Briem as its new CEO.  Briem, who steps down from the company’s supervisory board in order to become CEO, fills the role left vacant by Simon Flamank, who exited the company in October.  Some of TV-Loonland’s most popular current kid-targeted projects include Little Princess, The Owl and Pat & Stan.

Knightscove Media Corp. completes its acquisition of 51% of Studio 4 Networks’ US VOD Kidmazing Network.  Kidmazing features preschool and kid-targeted programming on pay TV operators Cox, Charter, Dish, AT&T, and Shaw, among others, and is available in about 10 million VOD households in the US and Canada.  Kidmazing is expected to increase its distribution to 15+ million in the first quarter, growing to approximately 25-30 million over the next 18 months. Additionally, Kidmazing and the soon to be launched Knight TV will offer full VOD packages of preschool, kids and tween programming over the coming months. A linear TV launch is slated for the latter half of 2010.  Knightscove purchased Kidmazing for CDN $270,000 in cash and the issuance of 850,000 subordinate voting shares, and plans to acquire the remaining 49% over the next two years, as is its option, for either US$1 million or subject to Canada’s TSXV approval, US$ 1 million in stock.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Mandalay Pictures picks up the feature film rights to author Elizabeth Eulberg’s forthcoming teen/young adult book The Lonely Hearts Club, which will be published by Point/Scholastic on December 29, per Variety.  Eulberg is Director/Global Publicity for publisher Little Brown and has worked closely with Twilight author Stephenie Meyer on the PR effort for her book series.  The story reportedly revolves around a heartbroken high school teen that decides that high school boys are total losers and in doing so founds the Lonely Hearts Club and refuses to date further during high school.  Mayhem ensues when lots of girls at her school join the club.  Peter Guber and Cathy Schulman will produce for Mandalay.

More casting news for Warner Bros.‘ live-action/CG-animated feature Yogi Bear as actor/comedian Andy Daly (Semi Pro, Life as We Know It) takes on the role of Mayor Brown, according to Variety.  The movie, which already stars Anna Faris, Dan Aykroyd, Justin Timberlake and Tom Cavanaugh, is currently in production in New Zealand. Eric Brevig (Journey to the Center of the Earth) is directing Yogi Bear from a script by Brad Copeland.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The millions of abandoned/homeless pets, overcrowded animal shelters and what kids/families can do are the focus of the new Nick News With Linda Ellerbee: Kids to the Rescue! Helping Homeless Animals, which will premiere Sunday, December 27, at 8p on Nickelodeon.  The special includes stories from regular kids as well as celebrities such as Lance Bass, Sophia Bush, Tony Hawk, Bonnie Hunt, Kimora Lee Simmons, Kellan Lutz, Maria Menounos and Tiffani Thiessen.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third movie in Summit Entertainment‘s adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight books, will be released in Imax theatres simultaneously wit the movie’s nationwide release on June 30, 2010. The first Twilight movie to be released in Imax theatres, Imax Corporation and Summit Entertainment will digitally re-master Eclipse to enhance both the image and sound quality.  Directed by David Slade (30 Days of Night, Hard Candy), Eclipse once again stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

To help answer the un-ending question, Where’s Waldo?, Classic Media and interactive entertainment company Ludia launch the Where’s Waldo? The Fantastic Journey game iPhone/iPod touch app today.  Designed for all ages, players are invited to … guess what?  Look for Waldo and his friends on the virtual global search that also includes tons of hidden items to find in twelve different worlds.  But, if you thought it was going to be easy-ish you hadn’t counted on the surprise challenges that might thwart your efforts like: Wacky Pain that splatters paint to fill the screen; or Frosty  that freezes the search window by encasing it in ice; or how about the Upside Down feature, which flips the search upside down.

MTV Networks International announces new Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) deals:

  • Down in Spain, in time for this holiday, interactive partner THQ will release the new SpongeBob SquarePants game title (12,000 units), SpongeBob and Friends: Globs of Doom for Nintendo DS, Wii and Playstation 2

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:   Launched in 1964 by Hasbro, the toy came with multiple accessories, playsets and a complex background story, all lending to the authenticity of the character.  This toy was “the good guy” while the “bad guy” was known as the Cobra Command.  What was (and is) the generic name for this line of toys?  GI JOE!  Not a doll … action figure!  Kudos to: Dave Bourla-D&BD Prods/NY; Danielle Larson-Hasbro/Pawtucket; Meredith Rusu-HarperCollins Publishers/NY; Sara Zeglin-Nat Geo Digital Kids/Washington; Lenea Ricks-KIDK/Idaho Falls; Squirrel Rippley-Dark Horse Media/Tucson; Kelly Lawer/Hillsboro; Kevin Weist-mevio/San Francisco; Randy Barrios-CBS/LA; Jason Atkinson-Radio Disney Network/Burbank; Loic Rayssiguier-Game One/France

Today’s Trivia Question:   This Parker Brothers board game was patented in 1935 by Charles Darrow, tho the game itself can be traced back to 1904 when it was created by a Quaker woman to teach the single tax theory.     The mascot is Rich Uncle Pennybags; he was renamed in 1999.  Interestingly, the game was distributed by fake charities set up by the British Secret Service to World War II prisoners of war  – the distributed games held in them items useful in escaping – maps, money, etc.  What is this game?   (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
