Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 6, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
4Kids Entertainment has retained Montgomery & Co. to assist the Board of Directors in its evaluation of strategic alternatives, which could include asset sales, strategic partnerships, as well as a potential sale via merger of the company. Explaining the move, 4Kids Chairman and CEO said the reason for retaining a financial advisor is a direct result of “… recent developments in our business and in the current macroeconomic environment …”
Sorpresa, the Hispanic kid/family-targeted TV network, has been acquired by distributor Olympusat from previous owners Firestone/Juniper Content Corporation. The terms of the deal were not announced. Sorpresa will become one of 11 channels in Olympusat’s Hispanic Pack of Spanish-language services. Available in 1+ million subscriber households, Sorpresa is currently distributed by Comcast, Cablevision, Charter Communications, Cox Communications, Time Warner Cable, participating National Cable TV Cooperative systems and in Puerto Rico on Liberty Cable Systems, and OneLink.
KidZui, which develops kid-targeted content for the web, launches ZuiTube .com, a free online video service that offers kid-friendly content. Initially ZuiTube.com is offering a library of 60,000 parent and teacher approved videos, with new content added daily, as well as allowing kids to upload their own video creations. ZuiTube is powered by YouTube, but is not affiliated with YouTube or Google. KidZui also operates the KidZui browser, which provides access to 2+ million kid-appropriate games, websites and videos.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Twilight welcomes 14-year-old Jodelle Ferland (Silent Hill, CBS’ Pictures of Hollis Woods) as a member of the third movie in the series, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, per Variety. Ferland will play a newly turned vampire. Eclipse is slated to open June 30, 2010.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Sesame Street launches its 40th season on TV on PBS this November 10 (check local listings). With a new show open and close, the new season features a nature-centric curriculum, My World is Green and Growing, including learning about the benefits of planting their own garden, as well as a new “block” format hosted by Word on the Street Muppet, Murray, from real locations around the world. Also new to the series will be the use of CGI animation in Abby’s Flying Fairy School, a segment staring series regular Abby Cadabby. Of course there will be celebrity guests appearances as well as parodies of adult properties, this season except a take on Mad Men (minus the smoking and drinking no doubt). Additionally, in honor of the anniversary year November 1o will also see the release of a tw0-disc compilation DVD, Sesame Street: 40 Years of Sunny Days and the illustrated coffee-table book A Celebration: 40 Years of Life on the Street.
Disney XD orders a second season of Zeke and Luther. Production on the new episodes will begin this September in Southern California. Produced by Turtle Rock Productions, Zeke and Luther premiered this summer on Disney XD in the US (June) and Latin America (July), and is slated to debut soon on Disney XD channels in France, Italy, the UK, Germany, Spain, Poland, Scandinavia and Japan.
HIT Entertainment and ‘Toons for Toddlers, a provider of in theater programming for K2-5 and families, will host the Canadian premiere of Thomas & Friends: Hero of the Rails (60 minutes), the first CG animated Thomas movie, in 19 screenings on August 29 and 30. Thomas & Friends: Hero of the Rails will be available on DVD on September 8, 2009.
Egmont USA is set to publish Allen Zadoff‘s debut young adult novel Food Girls, and Other Things I Can’t Have. Based on his own experience, Zadoff’s book revolves around Andrew, an oversized high school sophomore (he weighs in at 306 pounds) who is just trying to fit in to life, family and school. When the football recruits Andrew for the team, life changes and he is faced with all sorts of decisions that will help define who he is and wants to be. Food, Girls, and Other Things I Can’t Have is Zadoff’s first novel under his two-part deal with Egmont USA. Zadoff previously wrote about his weight, body and emotional issues in his memoir, Hungry: Lessons Learned on the Journey from Fat to Thin (Da Capo Press, 2007).

Chorion and licensing agent Click ink new promotional deals for Mr. Men and Little Miss in South East Asia and the Great China region. Chorion’s The Mr. Men Show animated series currently airs on TV12 (Singapore), Disney (Taiwan) and True Visions (Thailand) with Cartoon Network launching the series in the rest of South East Asia (excluding China) at the end of 2009.
- In the Philippines a new line of kid’s and teen apparel will launch in Shoemart Department Store‘s 35 stores beginning this September. Under a separate deal with Neat Inc., Shoemart is currently Banana Peel Mr. Men and Little Miss branded flip-flops.
- 7-Eleven stores in Singapore are offering a series of 10 collectable Mr. Men and Little Miss cell phone danglers. Fans who collect the set of ten have the chance to win Mr. Strong and Little Miss Naughty plush toys.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Hugh Marks steps down as CEO, Southern Star Group. Marks toiled for Southern Star for the last seven years. Taking over as CEO of Southern Star, effective immediately, is Rory Callaghan who most recently was MD of the company. Southern Star, which was acquired earlier this year by Endemol, is currently in production on 12 kid’s and drama series. Marks, who will continue to assist Southern Star in an advisory capacity, is also establishing a new consultancy business, Media Venture Partners, which will offer advice to producers and distributors on funding developing content.
