Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08/06/09
Good morning, it’s Thursday, August 5, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Another huge entertainment news story was broken on Twitter late Tuesday as Paula Abdul announced to her followers, “with sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return to IDOL.” (The LA Times reports that Fox was willing to up her salary to as much as $5 million/year for 3 years, after re-signing host Ryan Seacrest to a 3 year, $45 million deal last month.) Then around 12:30 pm PT yesterday, former Cheers star Kirstie Alley tweeted that she would be replacing Paula on Idol. “The Network is going to kill me but THERE IT IS FOLKS!!,” she wrote.

Meanwhile ESPN is trying to keep its talent on the reservation, releasing new guidelines that spell out what kind of tweets are appropriate for ESPN staffers, writers and analysts. Social networking blog Mashable published the 12 edicts, which include getting permission before you network about sports, prohibition of sports-related blogs and a ban on discussing internal polices or proprietary information.
Mountain Dew is commissioning an ambitious interactive web thriller called “Circle of 8,” produced by Paramount Digital Entertainment and Milchan/Van Eyssen, involving the brand in the storytelling experience throughout the project. The narrative/UGC hybrid will premiere on MySpace in Oct., before being distributed across multiple sites and devices.
National Geographic launched its own travel adventure site this week. Instead of an e-commerce portal, natgeoadventure.tv is more of an ad supported UGC and social networking play, providing a place for worldwide travelers to upload videos and stills of their adventures.
Global Gaming Factory, the company that purchased P2P streaming site The Pirate Bay, is considering a plan to list the company as a public entity in the U.S. in 2010.
Real time social & digital media tracking service Trendrr has launched a two-way developer API platform, opening up its backend to allow third party developers to build tools utilizing Trendrr data.
Much like Funny or Die did with its Comedy Tour starring Will Ferrell, Revision3 is taking to the road with Diggnation, broadcasting two live episodes this month in Las Vegas (which taped yesterday and airs Aug. 12) and Tempe, AZ (taping Aug. 19 for Aug. 26 release.) Staying cool should provide a natural transition through which to plug Diggnation’s brewer sponsors. Katalyst Film founder Aston Kutcher will join Alex and Kevin on stage in Vegas.
Check out SoulStorageCompany.com . It’s a mock company site purporting to store human souls. The company is the subject of a new Samuel Goldwyn Films release bowing in NY in LA on Friday in which Paul Giamatti plays a downtrodden actor who looks to swap out his soul.
Microsoft agreed to hire at least 400 Yahoo employees as part of its new search partnership, according to a regulatory filing that filled in some more details about the deal:
- Microsoft will pay Yahoo $50 million/year in transition costs for the next three years
- During the first 5 years of the 10-year deal, Yahoo will keep 88% of the search revenue generated from the Bing engine on its sites
- After 5 years, Microsoft has the option to terminate Yahoo’s sales exclusivity for premium search advertisers, which would increase Yahoo’s share to 93% for the next 5 years
- If Microsoft chooses not to exercise this option, Yahoo’s share rate will increase to 90%
YouTube announced it will begin introducing AdSense-like features to its interface, including “Promoted Videos” from paying advertisers next to recommended selections on a contextual basis. The site will take a share of revenue generated by the promotional videos with the producer’s page on which they appear. YouTube estimates that views of monetized partner videos have tripled over the past year and that it is now monetizing hundreds of millions of videos per week.
Layoffs at MySpace dragged down earnings at News Corp. as the company reported $680 in impairment charges during its most recent quarter ending June 30 – primarily related to Fox Interactive Media. The company reported full fiscal year adjusted operating income of $3.6 billion, a $1.7 billion decline from the record $5.3 billion of adjusted operating income reported a year ago, with current year revenues of $30 billion – down 8% from the $33 billion reported in
fiscal 2008.
Tivo is recommitting itself to the web video format, completing podcast integrations deals with a variety of new programmers including CBS, Fox, Oprah and G4. The interface allows users to view single episodes or subscribe to full seasons, as with linear shows. Tivo is also now accepting RSS feed inputs, which means that users can subscribe to any web show available via RSS. Go to tivo.com/rssvideo for a full breakdown on how to publish via RSS (the video must be in H.264 format.)
Google confirmed plans to issue $106.5 million in stock to acquire On2 Technologies as the search giant looks to enhance its video operations. On2 provides video compression solutions for Adobe Flash, Voice-over-IP, mobile video and digital media devices; the company’s clients include Move Networks and Brightcove.
The same day Google also announced its has closed a deal with online ad and business management software maker WideOrbit, selling select assets from its online radio buying service including Google Radio Automation, Maestro and SS32 automation products. Google entered the radio advertising business back in 2006 with the purchase of DMarc Broadcasting and its automated ad serving system.
Microprocessor designer MIPS Technologies has a novel idea – instead of trying to design a new digital media interface from scratch for the television, adopt one that already has a following. MIPS announced it is making the source code for Google’s Android mobile operating system publically available, meaning that digital TV and set-top box manufacturers can begin to adapt their hardware to the platform.
Premium broadband ads could soon be seen as more valuable than traditional television spots as online videos tend to capture a more attentive audience that can be more easily targeted, according to internal CBS research presented at by Chief Research Officer David Poltrack at TCA this week sourced by paidcontent.org. The audience for premium web content is growing, up 36% from June ’08 to June ’08, and long form streaming’s share of overall video viewing has increased from 19% to 27% during the same period. The network has broken down viewers into 4 categories: Old School (analog TV only), Web Centric (broadband), TV Centric (digital TV) and Fully Connected (both digital TV and broadband), and the latter has grown in leaps in bounds in recent months across all demographics.
Online TV and movie streaming has heated up to its highest levels yet during the summer according to Ipsos MediaCT‘s most recent Motion study. In the past 30 days, 26% of online Americans have watched a full-length TV show online while 14% have streamed a full movie and those numbers jump to 51%/31% respectively among 18-24 year olds. Increased usage of premium portals like Hulu aren’t replacing traditional TV yet, however, as connected Americans still spend 15 hours per week watching TV (vs. less than 2 hours on their PC.) Some 64% of this group still say they would rather watch TV shows on their big sets than rent, purchase or stream them via a PC or portable device.
The European mobile broadband market showed continued growth fueled by declining prices and improving performance while the North American market also showed steady growth, according to a new Berg Insight report. The researcher estimates the total global number of shipped mobile broadband devices in 2008 to be 37.2 million, with Europe and North America accounting for 18.2 million units and 3.7 million units respectively.
Sony may have learned its lesson about prohibitively high pricing with the PS3. The company announced plans to release two new cheaper e-book readers later this month: The $199 Reader Pocket edition and the $299 Reader Touch Edition. (The two models replace versions that cost $269 and $399.) Sony is also cutting the prices of its e-book best-sellers on its online outlet from $12 to $10.
- The Reader Pocket Edition will feature a 5-inch 800×600 pixel gray scale display.
- The Reader Touch features touch screen navigation (with a stylus or your finger,) comes with expandable memory slots and allows you to take notes that can be printed out.
In case you’re wondering, neither will come Wi-Fi capabilities, which means you must hook them to a PC to download books.
Remember Toshiba’s HD DVD format? Apparently the Chinese do. Toshiba has licensed the technology, known as China Blue High Definition (CBHD) in China (sounds like a narcotic,) and the format is outselling Blu-ray 2-1 in the world’s most populous nation. CBHD discs cost just a quarter of what Blu-ray discs costs, according to Times Online. Its penetration is beginning to impress movie studios. Warner Bros has said that 100 titles will appear on the format by the end of this year and about 30 are now available.
Panasonic‘s line of Viera Cast broadband enabled Blu-ray players will receive an automatic software update this week giving them access to Amazon‘s Video on Demand rental and download-to-own service. Viera Cast players also receive content from YouTube, Picasa and Bloomberg News.
Former MySpace Biz Dev executive Brandon Lucas has joined BET Networks as VP and GM of BET Mobile. Brandon will be based in Los Angeles and report directly to Denmark West, President of BET Digital Media.
Tremor Media COO Andrew Reis and Chief Strategy Officer Jesse Chenard, both founder members of the video ad network, have left the company in a management shakeup, per Mediapost. Tremor CFO Mark Pinney will assume an expanded operational role as part of the reorganization.
As the shakeout of independent online video publishers ensues, one is finding success by providing viewers with a place to browse premium content. Advertisers may be skittish when it comes to attaching a pre-roll to a UGC clip, but present a clean, controlled haven and the fear factor goes away. The recently redesigned Metacafe is having success with premium entertainment hubs it launched in June around sponsors’ TV shows, movies, music and sports content. (Each subportal is accessible from tabs at the top of the page.) The presentation is similar to its user-generated interface, but users are encouraged to stay for a while with the offer of multiple genre and category selections. Metacafe then went a step further to create branded microsites around specific projects, such as one to help launch the new SyFy series Warehouse 13. Introducing commercial video to independent haunts can be risky in terms of alienating the faithful, but so far Metacafe’s mix of viral and commercial is working. The site’s audience grew by 10% in June to 11 million U.S. uniques, while quarterly brand advertising revenue increased by 25%, according to Jack Rotherham, SVP of strategic sales and partnerships.
