Good Morning, it’s Thursday, August 30, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The News Corp./NBC Universal video portal finally has a name and a URL. The venture’s new CEO Jason Kilar writes they picked the moniker Hulu because it is “short, easy to spell, easy to pronounce and it rhymes with itself.” (Hulu means “feather/plumage” or “choice and precious” in Hawaiian, so perhaps it’s also a sly reference to the NBC peacock.) The site displays a bookmark page for now, but it is accepting applications for an invite to participate in a private beta beginning in October. The venture recently closed on $100 million in equity financing, so expectations are high in the Web 2.0 world.
Apple announced deals with ABC Studios, Disney Channel, MTV Networks International and Paramount Comedy to distribute full-length shows on the iTunes Store in the U.K. Apple’s first studio content deals out of the U.S. will come at a bit of a premium for British consumers, with individual episodes priced at 1.89 Pounds ($3.79). Full seasons of Lost, That’s So Raven, Pimp My Ride, Dora The Explorer and South Park are among the 28 shows initially available. The announcement comes as Apple is preparing to launch a new line-up of advanced video iPods including a full-screen, letterbox model.
MSNBC.com and CondeNet struck a deal to share online content from a variety of the publisher’s brands. MSNBC.com will feature material from Style.com, Men.Style.com, Epicurious.com and Concierge.com, as well as selections from a variety of print publications such as Glamour, Vogue and Vanity Fair.
AOL Latino announces the top 3 finalists of Fashionista today, the online reality design contest sponsored by Mercury Milan. As part of the finale, AOL Latino will debut three webisodes on Friday showcasing the finalists as they design outfits for a runway show. The winner will then be announced Friday at aollatino.com. Meanwhile AOL Music Live! premieres an exclusive live concert with platinum artist Daughtry, also on Friday night.
WWE and Ziddio announced with winner of their “Are You WWE’s Biggest Fan?” contest. Grand prize-winner Mike Timpson, who submitted a video demonstrating how WWE has influenced his life, took home $25,000 and commemorative championship belt.
Amazing Race winner Alex Boylan, former Survivor finalist Burton Roberts and Emmy Award nominated editor/director Zsolt Luka formed Around the World Productions to produce a series of interactive multiplatform reality shows. Social networking platform FanRocket will power the site aroundtheworldforfree.com, which will stream short daily and 8-12 minute weekly episodes shot from exotic locales around the world. Fans can chime in to suggest travel destinations for Alex to visit via email, message boards and text message. Interactive global maps, user generated photos, polls and blogs will round out the experience.
National Lampoon launched its own video channel on Yahoo! Video, featuring clips from classic comedies, webisodes of made-for-internet shows from nationallampoon.com.
YouTube signed an agreement with the MCPS-PRS Alliance of 50,000 UK-based music writers, composers and publishers to license 10 million tracks of music for a flat fee, reports The Financial Times. After YouTube hands over the funds the alliance will decide how to distribute it among its members based on online usage. This is the first such deal struck by YouTube outside of the U.S.
The FTC gave the go ahead for the News Corp./Wall Street Journal merger, granting early termination of the 30-day waiting period usually required to assess a deal. Pending approval by shareholders, News Corp. expects to complete the transaction in the 4th quarter.
New York-based ImaginAsian Entertainment, Korea-based Sidus Corp. and CJ Group affiliate M-net Media signed a new multiplatform content deal that will give ImagineAsian U.S. distribution rights to popular Korean dramas, music and variety shows including Thrilling Blind Date, Jaeyong’s Chaste 19 and M Countdown. M-net Media will serve as content aggregator for CJ Group’s catalog of shows in the U.S.
TiVo reported a widening net loss of $17.7 million for Q2, up from $6 million during the same period last year. However, revenues increased by 5.1% to $62 million on the strength of HD DVR sales and its partnership with Amazon that allows TiVo users to download Amazon movies directly to the unit. TiVo closed the quarter with 1.71 million subscribers.
The U.S. is lagging behind in terms of speed and affordability of broadband access, according to a report in the Washington Post. For instance Japan, once a laggard in the race, offers speeds 8-30 times faster than U.S. broadband services for half the price, in some cases. Competition among DSL providers has pushed the rates down to around $22 for a speeds that exceed what Comcast and Cox offer in the U.S.
Netflix doubled the amount of viewing via PCs during the past 6 weeks. As of August 22, Netflix users watched 10 million movies and TV episodes as more subscribers became aware of the feature rolled out slowly from January.

Google’s Chief Financial Officer George Reyes announced he will be retiring from the company later this year, one of the first high-level losses to the search giant’s executive ranks. George will stay on until a successor is found.
Warner Bros. Entertainment direct-to-consumer division Warner Premiere hired Lydia Antonini as Director, Digital Development. She will oversee digital content production strategy, budgeting and management, reporting to Diane Nelson, President, Warner Premiere.
821 Entertainment Group named Former Wachovia Holding Corp. Senior Executive Graham Chalfant as COO. Graham will also serve as President of digital media subsidiary 821 Interactive Group, which includes Crowfly Digital Entertainment. Additionally Tessa Atkins has been appointed Director of Marketing and Business Development while Denise Johnson joins as Manager of Special Projects.
Check this. VH1‘s Flavor of Love Casting Call website, which is signing up women for the new season of Flavor Flav’s reality show, is attracting some attention on the web. The site cracked Hitwise’s top 100 most viewed websites in the Entertainment category last week, even though it’s simply a minisite designed to accept photos and video auditions and allow users to vote on who they want to see on the show. There’s some real characters here, and the user interface is refreshingly simple.
