Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 27, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

This week marks the debut of Barbie‘s first music video, Do The Barbie, on YouTube, which supports the upcoming launch of Mattel‘s new Barbie Fashionistas doll line.  Designed to showcase the Barbie Fashionistas doll’s 12-point movement (bending elbows, twist wrists, move at the waist and roll her head), the new music video features The Barbie dance choreographed by JaQuel Knight (he did Beyonce’s Single Ladies) and three dolls from the line (Sassy, Cutie and Artsy) as well as a cameo by Ken. The Barbie Fashionistas dolls will be available at retail beginning in October.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Nickelodeon commissions two new live-action comedy series featuring original music that will be co-produced with Sony Music, per Variety.  Nick has picked up a new series entitled Victorious (20 episodes) from Dan Schneider (Zoey 101, iCarly, among others), and an untitled series (20 episodes) from the great Scott Fellows (Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide).  The shows are part of multi-year deal between Nick and Sony to develop projects with a strong music component.

  • The new Fellows show revolves around a boy band that wins and American Idol type competition show.  The series stars newcomers Kendall Schmidt, Carlos Pena, James Maslow and Logan Henderson.
  • Victorious stars Victoria Justice (Zoey 101, Spectacular!) as a new girl at a high school for performing arts. The series is slated to bow in early 2010.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Sesame Workshop‘s new version of The Electric Company will air weekdays on PBS Kids Go! beginning September 7 (check local listings).

The preschool channel JimJam expands in Asia to be available for the first time in Indonesia via the DTH pay-TV platform, AORA.  A joint venture between Hit Entertainment and Chello Zone, JimJam recently also launched on Air New Zealand, making the channel available in 50+ territories and in ten languages.

Nickelodeon Australia is prepping for the 7th annual Australian Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, which will air on Friday, November 13 at the Hisense Arena in Melbourne.  No word on who will host the show just yet.  Kids will be invited to vote for their favorites in multiple categories from September 20 through November 1 at www.nickelodeon.com.au as well as via the Foxtel and Austar interactive Red Button application.  Additionally, tickets for the show will be available from October 1 through Ticketek.

As part of the 10th anniversary of Lego Star Wars, Lego Systems is inviting fans to help search for R2-D2 in online animated comics, at www.starwars.lego.com, and will culminate in a 5-minute CGI animated mini movie, Lego Star Wars: The Quest for R2-D2, which premieres on Cartoon Network on Friday, August 28 at 9p.  The Quest for R2-D2 was produced by M2 Films.  Lego Star Wars was Lego’s first licensed property.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Chorion inks new apparel deals in the US for its properties Olivia and Mr. Men and Little Miss:

  • With product set to rollout from spring 2010, new licensing partners for Olivia include: H.I.S. International Group, in conjunction with Bentex Group will serve as the lead apparel licensee (girls sets and dresses); Berkshire Fashion (kid umbrellas, rain slickers, headwear and cold weather accessories); Accessory Innovations (totes, bags, backpacks and rolling luggage).  This group will join Spin Master’s upcoming new toy line and Junk Food’s new girls’ t-shirt line both for back-to-school.
  • For the Mr. Men and Little Miss property: MAG Brands (sportswear for adults, juniors, boys and girls); building on its earlier products, H.I.S. International Group, in conjunction with Bentex Group, Inc, will add girls sets and dresses to their line; Additionally Silver Goose adds new products (backpacks, totes, luggage, lunch kits, apparel and gift sets) to its range.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) inks a deal with Bang on the Door Limited to acquire the licensing and interactive rights for the UK design brand Bang on the Door for Eastern Europe, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.  FME plans to extend to grow the brand in these regions through various categories such as apparel, accessories, home decor, stationery, beauty, and gifts among others.  Targeted to both boys and girls, Bang on the Door is home to a range of different characters, including Groovy Chick, Football Crazy, Fairy Girl and Guitar Star as well the new FABri Animals line based on its classic animals.  Many of Bang on the Door’s 750+ characters have been featured on gifts, greeting cards, apparel and stationery among other products.

Hasbro is set to release a new line of Jurassic Park (1993) toys this fall.  Under a deal with Universal Partnerships & Licensing, the new Hasbro line features action figures (in various sizes) are based on the Universal film’s prehistoric characters and will be available exclusively at Toys “R” Us stores.

Precious Moments and Kideo, a creator of personalized video products, partner to create the first Precious Moments personalized DVD, Previous Moments: Our Angel Saves the Day (1×22), a story about a kid that helps bring together villages of Pilgrims and Native Americans.  So if you want your kid to be featured in the new Precious Moments: Our Angel Saves the Day DVD, get their photo ready, Kideo ( www.kideo.com ) will begin accepting orders September 1.  Kideo is brand of PixFusion.
