After battling for years with Dish Network over the same issue, Tivo announced it has filed new lawsuits against AT&T and Verizon over DVR patent infringement, including one covering the ability to pause and rewind live TV. The company also reported a smaller-than-expected Q2 loss yesterday as revenue fell by 12% to $57.4 million on fewer subscriptions, down to 3.05 million from 3.62 million a year earlier. Meanwhile, The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office dismissed TiVo’s petition to cease a re-examination of its patents, Dish and Echostar said in a statement.

In the wake of the closure of Menzies Digital’s ‘magazines on demand’ service in the UK, digital publishing firm Yudu Media will launch an online store for magazine e-editions next Tuesday. The Yudu Store will sell subscription packages and individual digital editions of titles to users, as well as offering access to digitized back catalogues of select titles.
Meredith Women’s Network relaunched its kitchen and bath design destination KitchenBathIdeas.com featuring new sideshows, articles and how-to videos.

Boxee, which has been downloaded over 600,000 times by early adopters and tech geeks, integrates media and enables one-click sharing of content via iPhone, PC, or broadband connected home theater set up with social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Fora.tv and UNICEF.org have also joined the platform, adding videos of lectures and public addresses within the Boxee App Box.
Rooftop Media is taking to the skies as a featured channel on digEcor‘s portable in-flight entertainment units found on Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, KLM and others.
Interactive video platform KlickableTV unveiled the latest version of its web-based publishing software including a new API, several player plug-ins compatible with Brightcove, JW Player, FlowPlayer, YouTube, and ThePlatform, and an integrated ad network. The KlickableTV ad network serves contextually relevant ads based on hotspot information provided by the publisher.

WPP Group, parent of GroupM, 24/7 Real Media, Mindshare and Mediaedge:cia, released its declining interim results for 2009, reporting that like-for-like revenues fell by 8.3%. WPP said to expect “even Steven” growth for 2010, despite next year’s crowded calendar including the Winter Olympics, World Expo, Asian Games and FIFA World Cup. However, the group said that digital and direct-marketing revenues garnered $1.7 billion in revenues during the first half of the year. Digital now comprises one quarter of WPP’s overall business.
Viacom’s Paramount studio has reached a temporary revenue sharing agreement with DVD rental kiosk business Redbox in which the start-up will share an unspecified percentage of its $1/night rental fee with the studio, per the LA Times. If the arrangement works out for Paramount, it has the option to extend the deal to 5 years – a deal valued at approximately $575 million, 25% more than a similar deal recently struck with Sony.
Live broadband video management firm The FeedRoom has partnered with video analytics and syndication provider TubeMogul to offer a new automated distribution service that will upload and track usage to dozens of video portals. Utilizing TubeMogul’s advanced analytics services, The FeedRoom hopes to increase the reach and impact of brand sponsored video campaigns.
Arqiva announced the completion of its acquisition of the platform assets of Project Kangaroo, the video-on-demand (VOD) platform developed by UKVOD LLP, a joint venture set up by BBC Worldwide, ITV and Channel 4. The hardware and software technology, and related intellectual property, provide the technical basis of a VOD platform designed for a content aggregation service. Arqiva plans to use the assets to launch a new VOD service to UK consumers in the coming months.
As a new mobile ad campaign notices, Twitter continues to be mostly an adult phenomenon but social networking in general is growing across all demos, according to new research on Social Technologies from Forrester. In 2009, more than four out of five online Americans are active in either creating, participating in, or reading some form of social content at least once a month. More detailed trends include:
- In the US, social technology “Creators” and “Collectors” grew slowly, while “Critics” didn’t grow at all; some lead the conversations, others consume silently
- The explosion in “Joiners” from 35% to 51% of online Americans reflects the hype and appeal of Facebook. Meanwhile, “Spectators” – those consuming social content – grew as a category to include 73% of online Americans

If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. Sirius XM Satellite Radio is rolling out a $120 docking system that transforms the iPhone into a satellite-connected radio device. The XM SkyDock, planned for release in the fall, will act as a car dock and charging station and pick up the actual signals from Sirius’ $13/month service.
Movie research and ratings site Flixster launched an upgrade to its free comprehensive iPhone app offering movie trailers, showtimes, DVD info and the ability to input personal ratings directly from the device then share them via Facebook. Flixter is trying to combine the functionality of many well-established apps to create a one-stop shop for movie fans. The biggest additions are integrations with your Netflix queue, Yelp, the iTunes Movie Store.
Nickelodeon’s AddictingGames casual game portal launched a selection of its most popular games on the iPhone. Available at the Apple iTunes store for .99 cents/ game are iPark It!, World Wars, and 50 States – the first of several games to be released as part of the ad supported AddictingGames iNetwork. Developers who sign up for the platform will gain access to community services such as high scores, level builders, Facebook Connect integration, player matching, and more in exchange for a revenue share of their titles.
New York-based Travel Ad Network CEO and Founder Cree Lawson has been kicked upstairs to become Chairman of the Board and Brian Silver has been promoted from President and COO to President and Chief Executive Officer.
The lawyers at RealNetworks must be scratching their heads over this deal. Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, Paramount and Lionsgate have endorsed a new site called FilmFresh.com that allows you to download new release movies (day-in-date of their DVD release) then save them onto a USB drive or burn them to keep on a DVD using the DivX format. There’s only 500 titles being offered initially but we’re talking huge releases here like Iron Man, Spider Man and the Harry Potter series. By virtue of its longevity in the marketplace, DivX has become fairly ubiquitous in the world of Consumer Electronics; dozens of DVD and Blu-ray players, HDTV’s, the PS3 and even some mobile devices are DivX compatible. Pricing is pretty dear considering the studio has no shipping, pressing or packaging costs to shoulder (ranging from $10-$16 for most movies.) But the fact that the studios took the leap with a true digital distribution method is encouraging. The official sanctioning of DVD burning-to-own (CinemaNow has been experimenting with the technology) comes down to trust in the DRM-protections of the format and DivX’s proprietary obviously passed muster.
