Cynopsis: Kids!
08/24/06
Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 24, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Several months back NBC Universal, Scholastic, Corus Entertainment and Classic Media/Big Idea along with TV distribution systems Ion Media Networks (f/k/a Paxson Communications), NBC and Telemundo, unfurled their plan to launch a new kid entertainment network focusing on literacy, positive values and problem solving and would feature bilingual programming. The multi-platform network now has a name, Qubo, with the TV programming block segment of the plan set to bow this September. Designed for Kids 4-8, the Qubo programming block will air in both English and Spanish, launching on multi-platform services including a new 24/7 digital kids TV channel that will run on ION’s TV station group, as well as through VOD service and a branded website. Programming line-up further below
FUNimation Entertainment has sealed an exclusive national sales rep agreement with Petry Media Corporation. Under the deal Petry International, a unit of Petry Media, will be responsible for FUNimation Channel ad sales and will also represent, on a non-exclusive basis, FUNimation’s online ad sales. Targeted to males 16-24, FUNimation Channel offers anime programming 24/7. Petry Media’s ad strategy will also include direct grassroots efforts and extended entertainment advertising.
Electronic Arts Inc. has acquired Germany’s Phenomic Game Development, game developer of strategy game franchises The Settlers and SpellForce. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Renamed EA Phenomic, the group will remain based in Germany and will continue to focus on developing real time strategy games for console systems, PC and online. Phenomic’s management team will continue in their current roles, including its Managing Director, Boris Kunkel, as well as Dirk Ringe and Volker Wertich, creator of the Settlers series and Creative Director of the studio respectively.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Fox Animation has optioned the rights to develop The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs, based on the kid’s book of the same name written and illustrated by William Joyce (Rolie Polie Olie, Bently and egg), according to Hollywood Reporter. Chris Wedge (Ice Age, Roots) will direct the movie from a screenplay by Joyce & Jim V. Hart, the two are also serving as executive producers on the project. Disney is adapting Joyce’s A Day with Wilbur Robinson for a CGI animated feature.
The Gotham Group, an animation talent agency, has inked deals with Lionsgate and IDT Entertainment, under which they will provide co-financing for 19 direct-to-DVD animated titles, per Variety. The deal valued at upwards of $50 million, will see Gotham producing 10 of the 19 titles for Lionsgate and nine for IDT that are to be produced over the next three years. The DVD’s will feature a combination of 2D and CGI animation, much of which will be produced in Korea by the animation studio Digital Tetra Inc. Gotham will provide half the production costs for each DVD title, from monies raised in a deal with Korea’s Sovic Venture Capital. Gotham will cull its roster animation talent for story ideas, as well as tapping into the libraries it reps, including Simon & Schuster’s young adult and children’s library, Dark Horse Comics and the William Steig and Maurice Sendak libraries.
