Election 2012: ABC News will provide full cross-platform coverage of the Republican National Convention in Tampa next week, Monday-Thursday and the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, September 4-6.  ABC News’ coverage will be led by Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos in addition to a team of political correspondents and contributors including senior political correspondent Jonathan Karl reporting from the convention floor; senior White House correspondent Jake Tapper covering President Obama’s campaign while World News weekend anchor David Muir covers Governor Romney’s campaign; and political analysis will be offered from Matthew Dowd, George Will, Cokie Roberts and Donna Brazile.  ABC News will also team with Univision News with Jorge Ramos contributing to ABC News in Tampa and Maria Elena Salinas contributing in Charlotte.  Live primetime coverage from the RNC, anchored by Sawyer and Stephanopoulos will begin at 10p on August 28-30 and live primetime coverage for the DNC on September 4-6.  ABC News’ RNC and DNC coverage will additionally extend to all of its daily newscasts, Good Morning America, World News with Diane Sawyer and Nightline. 

CBS Evening News Anchor and Managing Editor Scott Pelley, CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent and Face the Nation Anchor Bob Schieffer and CBS This Morning co-hosts Charlie Rose and Norah O’Donnell will lead CBS News’ coverage of the RNC and DNC.  CBS News will present three hours of live primetime coverage at the RNC August 28-30 at 10p and again for the DNC in Charlotte on September 4-6 at 10p.  CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker will report from the convention floor in Tampa; CBS News chief national correspondent Byron Pitts will report from the convention floor in Charlotte; CBS News political and chief legal correspondent Jan Crawford will be in Tampa with Governor Romney’s campaign while congressional correspondent Nancy Cordes will be in Charlotte with President Obama’s campaign.  Additionally, CBS News senior White House correspondent Bill Plante and CBS News political director John Dickerson will contribute to the coverage.  CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley will broadcast live from both conventions Monday-Thursday at 630p; Charlie Rose will co-host CBS This Morning live from both conventions Tuesday-Thursday at 7a with Gayle King as co-host in New York; and Face the National with Bob Schieffer will broadcast live from Tampa this Sunday and from Charlotte on September 2.

NBC News will offer viewers comprehensive coverage of both the RNC and DNC.  For the RNC, David Gregory will moderate Meet the Press from Tampa this Sunday; Matt Lauer will co-anchor split editions of Today from Tampa starting next Wednesday with Savannah Guthrie as co-anchor in New York; Brian Williams will anchor NBC Nightly News from the Tampa Bay Times Forum Monday-Thursday next week; Brian Williams will also anchor NBC News primetime coverage stating at 10p on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday while Tom Brokaw, who has covered every presidential election since 1968 will contribute across all platforms from Tampa.  Other contributors include NBC News political director Chuck Todd; correspondents Andrea Mitchell, Peter Alexander, Ron Mott, Kelly O’Donnell, John Yang and Luke Russert; senior political editor Mark Murray; and campaign embeds Garrett Haake, Alex Moe, Jamie Novogrod and Andrew Rafferty.  For the DNC, David Gregory will moderate Meet the Press from Washington, DC on September 2 and then travel to Charlotte for convention coverage; Savannah Guthrie will co-anchor split editions of Today from Charlotte beginning September 5 with Matt Lauer in co-anchoring in New York; Brian Williams will anchor NBC Nightly News from the Time Warner Cable Arena on Tuesday and Wednesday from the Bank of America Stadium on Thursday; Brian Williams will also anchor NBC News primetime coverage starting at 10p on September 4 and at 9p on Thursday with Tom Brokaw contributing across all platforms.  Also reporting from the DNC in Charlotte will be Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell; other correspondents Kristen Welker and Ron Allen; senior political editor Mark Murray; and campaign embeds Carrie Dann, Jamie Novogrod and Andrew Rafferty.

Telemundo News’ coverage will be led by Jose Diaz-Balart as he anchors live broadcasts of Noticiero Telemundo at 630p from each convention, four special editions of Noticiero Telemundo summarizing the day’s events at 1135p, August 29-30 and September 5-6 as well as reports during the network’s morning show Un nuevo dia at 7a and its daily news magazine Al Rojo Vivo con Maria Celeste at 5p.  Telemundo will offer further analysis and interviews with opinion leaders and experts from the conventions during its Sunday public affairs show Enfoque con Jose Diaz-Balart this Sunday and on September 2 at 12p.

Beginning Monday, Bloomberg News will broadcast live from the Bloomberg Link convention headquarters at the RNC and also at the DNC.  Bloomberg’s analysts and contributors at the conventions include Washington editor Al Hunt, Bloomberg Television political analyst Matthew Dowd, Bloomberg View columnist Margaret Carlson; White House correspondents Hans Nichols and Julianna Goldman in addition to chief Washington correspondent Peter Cook and Washington correspondent Meghan Hughes.  Street Smart anchor Trish Regan will also host Bloomberg Television’s primetime specials.  Bloomberg Television’s specific convention programming includes: at the RNC, Street Smart with Trish Regan will air live from Tampa next Monday-Thursday at 3p; primetime coverage called The Economy Election will air live from 9-10p Monday-Wednesday and on Thursday from 8-11p.  At the DNC, Street Smart with Trish Regan will air live from Charlotte from 3-5p Tuesday-Thursday; live primetime coverage under The Economy Election at 9p on September 4 and 5 and starting at 8p on September 6.

In other Election 2012 coverage, Logo will air two presidential election specials focused on issues affecting the LGBT community hosted by stand-up comedienne Wanda Sykes titled NewNowNext Vote with Wanda Sykes.  The first one-hour special will air a few days before the DNC on September 10 at 10p with a second live special on election-eve on November 5 (time TBA).  Both will air on Logo.

This fall, PBS opens a new sixth season of NOVA scienceNOW with new host David Pogue on October 10 at 10p (check local listings). Pogue, who is the technology reporter for The New York Times leads viewers through six themed episodes that highlight scientific breakthroughs and examines mankind’s place in the world.  Funding for NOVA scienceNOW is provided by the National Science Foundation, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the George D. Smith Fund, and public television viewers.

TV One launches a new docu-drama series that goes inside the lives of parole officers and the parolees they serve when Parole Diaries premieres September 12 at 9p.  The 13-episode series follows nine parole officers in Indianapolis and is produced by Towers Productions. 

Coinciding with the premiere of its new daytime programming, Hallmark Channel will introduce a new tagline and brand image on October 1.  The new tagline, The Heart of TV reflects Hallmark Channel’s values and emphasizes the network’s position as a destination for life-affirming, celebratory and quality programming that families can watch together.  Sneak peeks of the new tagline and branding via social media will launch September 17. 

Five new episodes of Doctor Who will debut on BBC America September 1 at 9p as part of the network’s Supernatural Saturday. 

A sixth edition of Rehab with Dr. Drew returns to VH1 starting September 16 at 8p.  Produced by Irwin Entertainment, the new season will again take viewers inside the rehabilitation process. 

The eighth season of Ghost Hunters on Syfy continues with all-new episodes on September 5 at 9p.  The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) team led by Jason Hawes travels to the South starting with Charleston, SC followed by other episodes visiting Louisiana’s Alexandria Zoo and the French Quarter in New Orleans. 

Spike TV renewed reality series Bar Rescue for a third season consisting of 20 episodes.  Presently in its second season, Bar Rescue has averaged 1.3 million viewers.  Eyeworks USA produces the series.

Another series was picked up for a third season as VH1 is continuing with Single Ladies.  For its second season, Single Ladies has been averaging 3.2 million total viewers.  Season three will premiere in 2013.

Tuesday’s third season debut of Syfy’s Face Off attracted 1.8 million total viewers, 1.0 million with A18-49 and 909,000 among A25-54. 

Thomas James Dougherty, 87, a respected and pioneering Washington DC communications attorney died on August 20 surrounded by his wife, Beverly, and his children.  A memorial service will be held where Mr. Dougherty lived with his wife at Murrells Inlet, SC this Saturday at 11a at the Belin Memorial United Methodist Church.  Family and friends will also gather in Washington, DC at a future date to celebrate his life.  Memorial donations may be made to the Belin Memorial UMC music fund or to The Wounded Warrior Project.

Broadcasting sales veteran, Benjamin John Newman, 57, of Winchester, MA passed away on August 19.  Described by a close friend as a “great guy” and “one of the good guys who will be missed by people all over the country…”.  Mr. Newman worked in broadcasting for many years building a large network of friends and colleagues with his kind and gentle style.  After several years in advertising in New York City, Mr. Newman worked for Westinghouse Company in broadcasting sales, and then later in 1992, he moved to Boston to Westinghouse-owned WBZ TV as a broadcasting sales manager and remained at WBZ (CBS affiliate) since then. Mr. Newman is survived by his wife Ellen Madigan Newman and his daughters, Riley Elizabeth, aged 3 and a half and twins Caitrin Mary and Teagan Alice, 17 months among other family members.  A graveside burial is scheduled for this Sunday at 1p at the Atlantic View Cemetery, Church Street, Manasquan, NJ and friends and family are invited to attend.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Benjamin J. Newman Memorial Fund, care of Richard E. Bauchspies Jr., Trustee, 283 Carriage Drive, Portsmouth, RI 02871.  Donations can also be made to the Manasquan Elks Handicap Beach Fund, 17 Stockton Lake Blvd., Manasquan, NJ 08736.

~PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

The brother/sister duo of Will and Robin Reiser were handed a put-pilot commitment from NBC for their half-hour comedy project titled The High Life.  The plot is about a misguided young woman who is newly sober and trying to juggle motherhood, work and marriage.  J.J. Philbin and Jake Kasdan are serving along with the Reisers as EPs and will co-write as well as Thruline Entertainment partner Willie Mercer.  Melvin Mar is also on board as a producer.  20th Century Fox TV is producing.

FOX gave a put-pilot deal to Kay Cannon, writer on New Girl for her half-hour workplace comedy project that is described as similar to The Mary Tyler Moore Show though set in the offices of an NFL Sunday-type show with a strong female lead as the centerpiece.  Cannon will write and serve as EP which is from Chernin Entertainment in association with 20th Century Fox TV.  Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope will also be EPs.

Lionsgate has optioned the book by Dave Morrow Take a Shot! The Remarkable Story of Perseverance, Friendship and A Really Crazy Adventure about Lacrosse and published by Hay House last week.  Lionsgate may adapt the book into a sports drama television series.  

WWE Superstar Edge (aka Adam Copeland) will be back on Syfy’s series Haven appearing in multiple episodes of the series’ third season including the premiere.  Edge will reprise his role as Dwight Hendrickson.  Haven is produced by Entertainment One (eOne) and Big Motion Pictures in association with Piller/Segan/Shepherd and airs on Syfy in the US, Showcase in Canada and internationally on Universal Networks International’s channels.  Season three of Haven premieres on Syfy September 21 at 10p.

Syfy is also developing the cult UK adventure sci-fi series Blake’s 7 working with Georgeville Television and producer Marc Rosen.  Martin Campbell will direct the script from Joe Pokaski.  Blake’s 7 originally premiered on the BBC in 1978 running for four seasons with 52 episodes.

Entertainment One (eOne) and Greenroom Entertainment commenced production in Vancouver on ten episodes of the drama series Rogue starring Thandie Newton and Marton Csokas.  The series will air in the US on satellite service DirecTV and on Astral’s The Movie Network (Eastern Canada) and Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central (Western Canada).

Sean Wilson, former Coronation Street actor-turned-cheese maker will star in a new series in the UK commissioned by Channel 5.  Produced by independent production company Transparent Television, the new primetime food series, Great Northern Cookbook will have four one-hour episodes.  The series will see Wilson venture to towns in the north of England as his culinary skills are challenged by local cooks.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis:  NBC topped the pack Tuesday with a 2.1/6 A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  America’s Got Talent on NBC led during 8p at 2.4/8 followed by Univision’s Por Ella Soy Eva at 1.5/5.  At 9p, NBC’s America’s Got Talent continued to draw the most demo viewers at 2.7/8 and FOX moved into second place with MasterChef at 2.4/7.  Univision hit #1 at 10p with Amor Bravio at 1.3/4 followed by encore airings of NBC’s new comedies Go On and Animal Practice at an average of 1.2/4.

GroupM North America named Ari Bluman in the new position as Chief Digital Investment Officer.  Ari joins GroupM from Real Media Group, a business unit of 24/7 Media where he was President since 2008.  In his new position he will head North American business development, ad operations, sales and client services.   GroupM and 24/7 are both part of WPP.  Ari will report to GroupM Chief Investment officer Rino Scanzoni.

Bravo Media elevated Aimee Viles to SVP/Emerging Media.  She will continue to head the Emerging Media department encompassing mobile apps, interactive TV, gaming and other emerging media efforts.  Aimee reports to Lisa Hsia, EVP/Digital for Bravo.
