Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 20, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
President Barack Obama will be featured guest on the new TV special Get Schooled: You Have the Right, the Viacom and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation half-hour special we told you about last week that focuses on educational challenges, life choices and experiences of three successful professionals. The President joins singer Kelly Clarkson and NBA player LeBron James, as they present the stories of speech writer Sarah Hurwitz, music director Jason Halbert and marketing executive Latesha Williams. Get Schooled: You Have the Right will premiere in a roadblock simulcast across all Viacom networks (including Nickelodeon, The N, Nicktoons Network, and NAN) on September 8 at 8p. The special will air commercial-free in partnership with AT&T, Capital One Financial Corp. and NYSE Euronext. Additionally, the program formally kicks off Get Schooled, a five-year national initiative, co-developed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Viacom, to create a platform for corporate and community leaders to deal with the challenges facing US public schools. You may also recall, September 8 is also the day that President Obama is scheduled to address US school kids about the importance of education and succeeding in school in his back-to-school message that will be carried live on www.whitehouse.gov at 1p.

PBS Kids programming notes:
- PBS Kids will premiere five new weather-centric episodes of the preschool animated series Sid The Science Kid the week of September 14-18, 2009 (check local listings). The five new episodes explore the science of weather and the seasons. Additionally, a pbskids.org/ sid will launch a new online game, focusing on weather and learning, simultaneous to the new episodes. The Sid the Science Kid TV series is co-produced by The Jim Henson Company and KCET/Los Angeles for PBS Kids, with the website produced by KCET New Media in partnership with FableVision.
- PBS Kids is hosting a marathon of the new preschool CGI animated series Dinosaur Train, with back-to-back episodes during the two-hour PBS Kids block on Labor Day, Monday, September 7 (check local listings). From The Jim Henson Company, Dinosaur Train will join the PBS Kids weekday lineup. Additionally there is also a corresponding Dinosaur Train interactive website at
Cookie Jar Entertainment‘s animated preschool series Caillou is moving to Treehouse (Canada) where it will debut on Monday September 7 at 7:30a. Caillou will air regularly on Treehouse Monday-Friday at 7:3a, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1p, and Saturdays at 7a and 10p and Sundays at 7a and 10:30p. A fifth season of Caillou is currently in production, a co-production with South Africa’s Clockwork Zoo, and is slated to bow on Treehouse in fall 2010.
PorchLight Entertainment enters into a long-term deal with E1 Entertainment Distribution. Under the pact E1 will distribute PorchLight’s upcoming December 2009 direct-to-video releases, A Martian Christmas and Jay Jay The Jet Plane: Jay Jay’s Christmas Surprise. E1 will also distribute PorchLight’s library of movies and kid-targeted programs including Adventures from The Book of Virtues, LeapFrog’s Tad of Christmas Cheer and 64 Zoo Lane.
Cartoon Network Digital launches Cartoon Network TKO: Titanic Kungfubot Offensive, a free real-time multiplayer action game that features giant robot versions of Cartoon Network TV characters. The game currently features six robots including Swampfire, Big Chill, Kevin Levin, Zak Saturday, Munya, and Van Rook, with plans to add a new robot to the game for seven weeks for a total of 13 fighters.
National Geographic Little Kids magazine launches a new online component at littlekids .nationalgeographic.com. Like the magazine, the website is targeted to preschoolers 3-6 and their parents/caretakers. The site features a range of games, crafts, recipes, experiments and videos, as well as resources to help parents talk to kids about various things including the first day of school.
This week marks Knowledge Adventure‘s launch of its Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game for members of its JumpStart.com virtual world. Targeted to K3-10, Jumpeez (kid members on the site) can see and interact with other members by way of chats and express themselves with pre-selected emoticons and animations. Since the initial beta launch of JumpStart.com in late 2008, Knowledge Adventure reports having doubled its traffic from December 2008 to August 2009.
Comic book publisher Ardden Entertainment unveils plans to create and launch a new comic book series, Casper and the Spectrals, which is based on Harvey Comics‘ characters Casper the Friendly Ghost, Wendy the Good Little Witch and Hot Stuff. Featuring updated graphics and new storylines, Casper and the Spectrals will debut this full in conjunction with the Casper the Friendly Ghost’s 60the anniversary as the title character in his own comics. Created by veteran comic book creator/writer J.M. DeMatteis and Ardden co-founder Brendan Deneen, Casper and the Spectrals is being written by Todd Dezago and illustrated by Pedro Delgado.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Discovery Communications inks a deal with Primary Colors to develop a line of Animal Planet branded stationery, craft and school supplies. The deal, brokered for Animal Planet by the Joester Loria Group, will see the line launch at retail in spring 2010. A portion of the proceeds from the products will benefit the principal partners of R.O.A.R (Reach Out. Act. Respond), Animal Planet’s national initiative with animal organizations, which provides animals with a voice.

In a one night only event, The Wizard of Oz in HD and totally re-mastered will be shown in movie theaters nationwide as part of the 70th anniversary of the movie’s release. NCM Fathom, Warner Home Video and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will offer movie fans the chance to see the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion and Dorothy, and her little dog too, make their way to the merry old land of Oz on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 7p. The Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary HD event will feature an introduction by Robert Osborne, film historian and host of TCM, who will also offer facts and stories about the movie, To Oz! The Making of a Classic, an audio outtake of “If I Only Had A Brain” with Ray Bolger and Judy Garland, and a behind the scenes look at how MGM artists created everything from the music, costumes and special effects for the movie. Warner Bros. Home Video will release The Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition the following week on September 29, 2009.
