Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 13, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Kidz Bop builds on its kid/tween-targeted brand with its newest audio release, Kidz Bop 16, and showcasing kid performers.  The album features a new ensemble of kid performers that serve as the new face of the brand, The Kidz Bop Kids, as well as the label’s first original artist, 12-year-old singer/songwriter Sinai Rose.  The five Kidz Bop Kids star on the album and will be showcased in music videos and Kidzbop .com.  In addition to appearing on the current album with her song LOL, Sinai Rose will also be featured on Kidz Bop Christmas and Kidz Bop 17 and her full-length debut album in 2010.  In its first week Kidz Bop 16 sold 38,000+ units and debuted on The Billboard Top 200 Album chart at number 8, the 10th Kidz Bop title to do so.  Additionally, Kidzbop.com experienced its strongest month ever this July, surpassing 3 million video streams and 1+ million visits.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

John H. Williams and his Vanguard Films acquired the movie rights to the graphic novels Circus Galacticus and The Oz Wars, in a deal inked at Comic-Con, per Variety.  Williams will produce both graphic novels, which are works in progress, as sci-fi movies aimed at a PG-13 audience. Vanguard’s Rob Moreland will also serve in a production role on the movies.

• A futuristic story, Circus Galacticus about a circus comprised of “mythic creatures, fantasy aerialists and heroic guerrilla fighters.” Created by screenwriter/author Michael Walker, the story is set in a world ruled by evil tyrants who rule Earth and deem the circus as the only allowable entertainment.
• Set in the Emerald City, The Oz Wars is an action movie revolving around a war started by the Witches in their fortress against resistance fighters helmed by a Wizard.  The Oz Wars was written by an “established screenwriter” under the pseudonym “Dorothy Gale.”

Summit Entertainment‘s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse gets another new cast member in Jack Huston (Eastwick), according to THR.  Huston will take on the role of Royce King II, a human being that lived during the Great Depression.  Directed by David Slade (30 Days of Night), Eclipse is the third movie in the Twilight series and scheduled for release on June 30, 2010.

MORE KIDS STUFF

This week marks Scholastic‘s release of the next title in its The 39 Clues series, Book 5: The Black Circle by bestselling author Patrick Carman.  The hardcover edition is being released simultaneously in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, and India, along with the audiobook edition produced by Scholastic Audio.  Additionally, Scholastic announces it has licensed The 39 Clues series for publication in 17 foreign languages, including Japanese, Italian, German, Chinese, French, Greek, and Hebrew.

Peter Himmelman’s Curious World, a new series of 10 webisodes for kids featuring musician/composer/performer Peter Himmelman, will launch on Sunday, October 4, 2009 at 11a on LandofNod .com, the website of the kid’s home furnishing/gift retailer, with new episodes debuting each Sunday morning through December 6.  Each episode offers a preschool appropriate theme of the day (e.g. friends, sharing, adventure etc) and related questions from kids, as well as interviews with kids and on the street interviews with real people at work (e.g. shop owner, dog walker).  Peter Himmelman’s Curious World is produced by Hoosick Falls Productions.  Additionally, Himmelman releases his new CD, My Trampoline, this month from Minivan Productions.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Nickelodeon and Dell team to release the new Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition, which will be available in the US at Dell.com and at Walmart stores and Walmart.com beginning this October.  Designed specifically for kids, the new computer features Nick’s trademark green slime artwork and also comes loaded with both entertainment and educational content.  The Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition features a user interface developed for Dell by Stardock Systems, and includes Nickelodeon-branded desktop wallpaper and icons, and a desktop animaticon linked to educational content from Numedeon, Inc.‘s Whyville.net, which features activities and games sponsored by NASA, Scholastic Publishing, The Center for Disease Control and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution among others.  The Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition weighs in at less than 3 pounds and features a 10.1-inch LCD display and built-in wireless, as for the price  that hasn’t been announced yet.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment (WDSHE) unveils plans to continue releasing its Blu-ray disc combo pack worldwide through December 2010.  The studio says its decision to keep offering the Blu-ray/DVD combo was based on a recent online survey that found 77+% that intend to use Blu-ray technology in the near future believe that the combo deal is a better value than just buying either one individually.  Well, okay.  The studio began offering the combo pack in fall 2008.  Upcoming family-targeted combo pack titles include Hannah Montana The Movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, UP and Santa Buddies.

National Geographic Kids magazine sets the Guinness World Record for the most items of clothing collected for recycling.  The clothing was collected as part of an effort to teach kids about recycling and to help reduce the amount of waste in landfills, and will be donated to Cotton Inc.‘s denim drive initiative, Cotton. From Blue To Green. As displayed in a an art installation at Union Station, Washington, D.C. (where it will stay until August 27), the official record stands at 33,088 items of denim clothing, which will be used to create insulation for 60+ homes.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Kidz Entertainment/EEMC appoints KJ Istok as its CEO.  Istok takes on the new position following the departure of Anna Lisa McBride as CEO last month.  Additionally, Slawek Eikert is named as the new country manager for Poland as Kidz/EEMC expands in key territories, specifically in Eastern Europe and Russia.
