Good morning, it’s Thursday, August 13, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Facebook began testing a leaner, meaner, speedier version of its social networking platform for casual users dubbed “Facebook Lite,” per TechCruch. (News of the service leaked late Tuesday night when Facebook invited more folks than in intended to beta test the service.) Similar to the Facebook’s popular mobile version, Lite would offer stripped down functionality including friend requests, wall writing, photo posts and video viewing. The service is also contoured for parts of the world (like Middle America) where broadband has been slow to develop.
Non-fiction programming giant Discovery Communications, a company that has been hesitant to stream long-form programming online thus far, is joining Comcast‘s OnDemand Online trial, according to B&C, citing executives familiar with the talks. Turner, Rainbow Media, A&E Networks and BBC America have also signed on to experiment with the online authentication system.
NBC Universal has joined the Facebook Connect revolution, adding the integration to NBC.com immediately with plans to add additional sites in the coming months including USANetwork.com, AccessHollywood.com, iVillage.com, Syfy.com, Oxygen.com, NBCSports.com and the NBCOlympics.com site in time for the Vancouver Winter Olympics in February. Facebook Connect allows fans to easily share content from the site with their Facebook friends without having to separately register.
King Features Syndicate‘s digital unit has added Advance Internet to its distribution list. The group’s Comics Kingdom and Puzzles Package content suites will now appear on 11 of Advances regional sites including NJ.com, MLive.com, al.com, cleveland.com, NOLA.com, OregonLive.com, syracuse.com, MassLive.com, PennLive.com, lehighvalleylive.com and SILive.com.
Everyone’s favorite media center software maker Boxee closed an another round of funding to the tune of $6 million, led by General Catalyst Partners with existing investors Union Square Ventures and Spark Capital also participating. Boxee hopes that General Catalyst will help the software provider build bridges with content owners like NBC Universal and News Corp., which withdrew Hulu from the Boxee web/TV interface earlier this year. Neil Sequeira from General Catalyst will also join the Boxee board.
Live streaming also continues to be an attractive niche among VC investors as Ustream.tv too raised an additional round of funding from existing investors including Doll Capital Management, reports Contentinople. The start-up has raised more than $15 million to date.

Interactive Program Guide supplier Rovi Corp. (formerly Macrovision) is teaming up with independent research firm TNS Media Research in effort to authenticate and standardize advanced set-top box measurement. Under the terms of the deal TNS, which also provides measurement solutions for DirecTV and Charter’s interactive services, will measure ad performance, iTV engagement and guide interaction across a potential ad footprint of 11 million homes. (There are some 25 million homes that are Rovi IPG ad enabled but many of them are Comcast subs, which serves its own ads.) The nascent iTV ad business is need of objective third party reporting if it’s truly going to monetize the platform,” said George Shababb, president of TNS MR North America about the deal.
How’s this for a David and Goliath match-up. A Texas judge has upheld a verdict in favor of Canadian software company i4i, slapping an injunction on Microsoft that prohibits the software giant from selling any Microsoft Word products capable of opening .XML, .DOCX or DOCM files (XML files) containing 141’s patented custom XML. Redmond was ordered to pay $290 million in damages, up from an initial $200 million.
RealNetworks, which has been waging an uphill battle of its own trying to popularize its burn-your-own movie RealDVD software, lost a hearing on the issue this week, per CNET. The judge ruled in favor of the MPAA issuing a preliminary injunction preventing Real from selling the software until a jury can decide the issue.

This sounds like a useful app when flying into sketchy airports. A company called Bag-Claim has released interactive luggage system that alerts you to when your bags are coming down the carousel. It works utilizing any Bluetooth v2.0 mini speaker device, which pings the Bag-Claim iPhone app when your bags come up. The app cost $5.
A&E launched the branded online game – Kill Criss Angel from The Visionaire Group, allowing fans and foes alike decide whether they want to help or kill Criss Angel as he attempts one of his stunts. Facebook Connect allows users to display results to their friends.

By now Hollywood movie or talent incubation sites are not new. MovieHatch.com has a slightly different twist, encouraging would be screenwriters to put together low budget trailers in order to pitch their products, resembling the trailers made for the finished products.
