Cynopsis Media presents:

The Primetime Emmy® Awards 2010

08.12.10

Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 12, 2010, and this is the final in a special five-part series on this year’s Primetime Emmy® Awards.  As with the previous four, this installment concentrates on one or two award categories with information about each of the nominees as listed ATAS and if provided, a description sent to us by the nominee and/or the nominee’s representatives.  This installment begins with an editorial about the category, written for Cynopsis by Daisy Whitney.  As always with any special edition, we hope you find the information relevant, interesting and informative, and encourage your feedback via our Discussion board on our Cynopsis website here.

In the category of ”  Outstanding Actor/Actress”

by Daisy Whitney

If ever there was a lock on an Emmy® acting award it would be Jane Lynch for Glee. The actress has been nominated for best supporting actress in a comedy and there’s nary an Emmy® prognosticator around who’ll be betting against her. She is a scene stealer and the reason many viewers tune into that popular show.

But, alas, the leading categories are a tad bit harder to predict and that’s what our job is this week!

For best actress in a drama, Julianna Margulies from The Good Wife looks to be the front runner following her SAG and Golden Globe wins. But she will be challenged by a stable of strong women including the reigning two-time winner Glenn Close for her role in Damages. Mariska Hargitay has also taken home the gold before, while Kyra Sedgwick will aim to eke out a win from her fifth nomination in as many years. But if anyone’s playing the spoiler to Margulies, it’ll likely be Connie Britton of Friday Night Lights. Her nomination was hailed by Emmy® watchers as an “about time!”

As for the best actor in a drama series, many feel the same way about Kyle Chandler’s long-awaited nod in Friday Night Lights. But he’s not likely to take home gold as he faces tough competition from two-time winner Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad as well as Matthew Fox in Lost, who may pull off a win due to the final season sentiment surrounding his show. However, Michael C. Hall was wowed this year in Dexter and that’s why Emmy® watchers are putting their bets on him as the front runner, though it’s a very close call in this category.

Best actor in a comedy is equally tough to peg but most experts don’t expect Alec Baldwin to walk away with a three-peat for 30 Rock even though he is the comical anchor of that acclaimed show. Big Bang Theory has a lot of fans in Hollywood, the critics’ corners and on living room couches so keep your eye on the show’s Jim Parsons to win the gold. But both men should beware that Tony Shalhoub may land a send-off trophy for Monk.

The best actress in a comedy category is stuffed full of past winners from Julia Louis-Dreyfus to Tina Fey to Toni Collette. But Edie Falco is a past winner too, having landed three Emmys® for her leading actress in a drama role in The Sopranos. She’s likely to make it a quartet this year.
