~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

FOX is playing off the uncertain economic times with a new reality competition series called Someone’s Gotta Go. The series, from Endemol USA, will go inside real American businesses giving employees the chance to decide which colleague will be laid off. Production on the project is underway with a possible premiere date of late summer or early fall. Many of the details on the show have not yet been disclosed though each episode will feature a different small business that has been forced to make staff reductions. Furthering the employee’s power to decide who will leave, the company’s books will be available including HR files, exposing what each employee makes and what their personnel files contain. Added to the mix will be a professional business coach/employment consultant who will also serve as the show host. In the end, employees will vote on who should be terminated, with that person receiving a small severance. Another interesting note is the show will be shot documentary-style much like NBC’s fictional The Office.

Leah Remini rejoins the world of sitcoms in the ABC comedy pilot Don’t Try This at Home, per THR. From ABC Studios, Don’t Try This at Home is about marriage and parenting from the perspective of three couples. Remini plays a newspaper editor who is raising three kids with her husband played by Matthew Lillard.

A&E Network ordered nine 60m episodes of the unscripted series Fugitive Chronicles from RDF USA and RAW TV. The series, currently in production, relates intriguing recent stories involving fugitive captures. The series will deploy dramatic reconstructions as well as interviews to fully tell each story. RDF USA’s Chris Coelen and Charles Tremayne serve as executive producers along with RAW TV’s Dimitri Doganis and Bart Layton and A&E’s Robert Sharenow, Scott Lonker and Jordana Hochman.

SCI FI Channel tapped Allison Scagliotti (Nickelodeon’s Drake & Josh) for its new original 60m dramedy series Warehouse 13. Scagliotti will join already named cast members Eddie McClintock, Joanne Kelly, Saul Rubinek and CCH Pounder. In the adventure series, Scagliotti will play Claudia Donovan, a young, hip techno-genius who breaches the Warehouse’s top-flight security system to find Artie (Rubinek). Warehouse 13 is produced by Universal Cable Productions and the two-hour pilot is slated to premiere on SCI FI July 7 at 9p.

National Geographic Channels International hired Parthenon Entertainment Group to produce the mini-series Mystery Files with 13 30m episodes. The series, shot in hi-def, will explore some of the world’s most dramatic and famous mysteries surrounding legendary characters such as King Arthur, Robin Hood, Cleopatra and more.

Casting Call: The CW’s America’s Next Top Model, produced by 10 by 10 Entertainment in association with Bankable Productions, is holding one final open casting call this Saturday in New York City for Cycle 13. Eligibility requirements include: females age 18 to 27 of diverse backgrounds, shapes, sizes and with a height of 5’7″ and under. To confirm the exact location in NYC and registration time, visit www.cwtv.com.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   What if the next Bill Gates grows up in rural Idaho? The FCC unanimously approved a measure yesterday to develop a “national broadband plan” whose aim is to insure that all Americans have access to affordable high-speed internet services. The Commission, which so far has only a share of $7.2 billion to spend as part of the President’s stimulus package, must deliver the plan to Congress by Feb. 17, 2010 and is seeking input from all corners during a 60-day comment period. Initial responses to the scheme from industry executives and Washington-area think tanks were positive. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Coolabi, a UK-based owner/developer/manager of mostly kid-centric properties, suspended trading of its stock yesterday and confirmed that it is in the early stages of discussions for a potential takeover.  Though Coolabi didn’t specify who it was in talks with, Broadcastnow reported late in the day that it believes that Coolabi is in talks with Chorion for a merger.  Coolabi’s library of licensed properties include Bagpuss, The Clangers Purple Robbie, Scarlett & Crimson, and Ivor the Engine among many others.  Chorion’s portfolio includes rights to a range of crime writers including Agatha Christie, Georges Simenon, Margery Allingham, and its kid’s group includes Mr. Men and properties by Enid Blyton among others.
