In its latest effort to drive a harder bargain with Microsoft, Yahoo agreed to carry a selection of AdSense search ads from Google in a two-week trial limited to 3% of all search queries made through the Yahoo portal. Redmond called balderdash almost immediately, pointing out that a definitive agreement between the two companies would give Google over 90% of the search market. Therefore, a larger integration would never pass muster with regulators. Yahoo gets points for creativity here nonetheless.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
The BBC is launching a version of its popular full-episode iPlayer that will stream programming through Nintendo’s Wii gaming console in the UK, the company announced at MIP TV. BBC says the iPlayer delivered 17.2 million streams & downloads in March and over 42 million views since launching late last year. For Nintendo, the deal is the latest in a series to bring more content to the Wii platform; next up are third party web-based “WiiWare” games and applications scheduled to launch next month.
 
BravoTV.com is stepping up an extensive web 2.0 campaign to promote the dance competition series Step It Up & Dance. The site will stream weekly dance-alongs featuring the show’s contestants and choreographers. A video widget, showcasing exclusive video shorts which test users’ expertise on a range of dance steps, will help drive traffic back to Bravo.TV.com.
 
Nat Geo has launched a new practical site to help viewers calculate the impact they will likely have on the Earth, based on their consumption habits. NGCHumanFootprint.com, built to promote an NGC special airing on Sunday night at 9 pm ET/PT, features a cool flash-based interface that queries users on tendencies such as how many miles they drive each day, then compares the totals to US, UK and Japan averages.
 
Following on the heels of its SXSW coverage, IFC is giving the full multiplatform treatment to the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival, offering daily on air and online reporting, archival festival footage, daily video coverage via IFC.com’s Lunchbox show and other exclusives.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
With that nasty court battle behind them, IAC/InterActive Corp. can get back to the business of launching websites. RushmoreDrive is the first in a series of new sites planned, an African American-targeted search, news, job and social networking portal filtering content as it relates to black users.
 
Celeb blogger/trash talker Perez Hilton landed his own twice-daily radio show, launching on May 5 in major markets including New York, LA and Chicago. It is the first program from “C” Student Entertainment, founded by former Premiere Radio Networks CEO Steve Lehman and former Head of Programming at MTV Andy Schuon.
 
Mahalo Daily host Veronica Belmont is leaving one of the longer running web shows to become co-host of a tech show called Tekzilla on Revision3, a show she often guest stars on. Nothing against founding host Patrick Norton, but Veronica should help jazz thing up considerably.
 
Last.fm claims its full-track music streaming service has boosted CD and download sales on partner site Amazon.com by 119% since launching in January.
 
Call for Content: ThinkMTV, Seventeen Magazine and Declare Yourself are looking for 90-second viral videos demonstrating to young people how easy and painless it is to vote. The best entry will get a trip for two to LA and VIP passes to Declare Yourself’s celebrity-packed “Young Hollywood” party in September.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Adobe rolled out its new Adobe Media Player packaged with content from MTV Networks, CBS, Scripps, PBS, CondeNet, Wizzard Media and Universal Music Group. Offering users the option to subscribe to season passes of ad supported shows for free, Adobe is positioning the player as a hybrid of Tivo and iTunes, along with targeting and customization options for advertisers and extensive measurement tracking for programmers.
 
Disney
announced that from now on all computer animated features from Disney and Pixar will be released in the digital 3-D format, beginning with Disney’s Bolt slated for a Nov. 26, 2008 release. The news follows DreamWorks Animation’s commitment to the format for its computer-generated titles. Currently there are only about 1,000 3-D screens in the U.S., but exhibition chains are working fast to increase their 3-D screen counts.
 
Mobile entertainment provider Limbo signed a year-long deal to supply Virgin Mobile USA with exclusive interactive programming including games, contests and other promotions.

Video search engine Blinkx signed online ad deals with HIT Entertainment, Channel 5 Broadcasting in London and Cheiftive, tied to contextual ads embedded on video searchable and viewable on Blinkx.com.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Univision and Nielsen have found a new way to count and measure ROI in Hispanic households. Nielsen and Univision will fuse data culled from Nielsen Homescan research with purchase information to give marketers a better idea of how effective ads are in motivating Hispanics to purchase products marketed directly to them. Univision is also bringing the results of new Simmons media habits study to the upfront, highlighting increased Spanish-language media consumption among young, bilingual Hispanics. Key finding include:

  • 78 percent watch Univision because it has their favorite shows
  • 71 percent say that ads in Spanish demonstrate respect for their language
  • 56 percent say that ads in Spanish make them feel recognized
  • 73 percent watch commercials on Spanish-language TV compared to 33 percent who watch commercials on English-language TV; 41 percent of non-Hispanic 16-24 year olds who watch English-language television watch the commercials

 
The U.S. improved its standings in terms of broadband infrastructure, climbing from 7th to 4th in the latest Global Information Technology report conducted on behalf of The World Economic Forum, despite lagging considerably in broadband speeds and penetration rates. Cisco Systems sponsored the report.
 
About 5.3 million U.S. Households have requested 10 million $40 coupons so far for digital converter boxes, according to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~
 

Mark Gail is heading up a new digital sales team at BBC America as SVP/BBC America and BBC Digital Sales. It is the first team to sell directly to BBC.com from the U.S. Mark will have help from Brian Matthews, VP/Ad Sales, East Coast, who joined from NBC Digital; Mark Richardson, VP/Ad Sales, Midwest, formerly of The Weather Channel; and Charles Douglass, VP/Ad Sales, West Coast, who left CNN Networks.
 
Mai Kim Flournoy will join the Oxygen Network as VP/Strategic Multiplatform Program Planning, beginning April 21, 2008.  Mai most recently served as VP/Program Planning for VH1.   She will oversee strategic, long range planning for Oxygen across all platforms, reporting to Jason Klarman, GM, Oxygen.
 
THQ Wireless named Sony Computer Entertainment and Glu Mobile veteran Beth Doherty as VP/Sales, North America. The company also re-organized its product development and production teams by upping Brad Pitser, previously Executive Producer for THQW, to Head of Global Production. Beth and Brad will be based in THQ’s new San Diego global headquarters.
 
Sam Stahl has become the new Director of Ad Sales for blip.tv, following stints with Connected Ventures and VNU Business Media. He will work out of blip’s New York office, reporting to COO Dina Kaplan.

A pair of 22-year-old actors are trying to get a reality/game show called You as Hugh off the ground as a tribute to their lifelong hero, Hugh Hefner. Via shingles on MySpace and YouTube, Joe and Dave are asking like-minded guys to send video testimonials about why they are worthy to be the next Hef. In their latest video they wish the 82-year old playboy a Happy Birthday and deploy some fuzzy math to appease his critics – adding the ages of his 3 current Girls Next Door to come up with an age that is actually older than Hef. I’m not sure if Hef liked this as much as the gift he reportedly received from soon-to-be E! colleague Pamela Anderson, but Hef is one of You as Hugh‘s 7,380 friends.
