Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 20, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Disney XD is set to premiere a new original 2D animated series Kick Buttowski – Suburban Daredevil (20×30, f/k/a Kid Knievel), on Saturday, February 13 at 8:30a.  The new comedy series debuts in-between two new episodes of Phineas and Ferb at 8a and 9a, and followed by another new episode of Kick Buttowski – Suburban Daredevil at 9:30a.  Created by Sandro Corsaro and produced by Disney Television Animation, Kick Buttowski – Suburban Daredevil follows the adventures of Kick (aka Clarence), a kid who is determined to become the world’s greatest daredevil.  The series will air regularly on Saturday mornings at 8:30a, with episodes available after their TV debut on DisneyXD.com ( www.disneyxd.com ).  Leading up to the premiere DisneyXD.com will launch a Kick Buttowski  Suburban Daredevil show page featuring games, activities and videos, including the game Loco Launch-o where users help Kick perform a jump.  From February 13, kids can create and submit their own Kick Buttowski catch phrase with customized backgrounds, props, sound effects and graphics, some of which may appear on air.  Additionally, full episode previews will be available for free on iTunes beginning Friday, January 29 and via Disney VOD from Friday, February 5.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Sega Toys will launch the Zhu Zhu Pets in Japan this spring 2010 and plans to release a manga serial featuring the electronic hamsters in a kid’s magazine later this year, while working on an animated Zhu Zhu Pets series for 2011, per Nikkei via Anime News Network.  The Zhu Zhu Pets were created by US-based Cepia and were one of the most popular toys during holiday 2009.  Sega inked a license deal to sell and represent the Zhu Zhu Pets across all Asia, placing a special emphasis on China and the Southeast Asian countries.

MORE KIDS STUFF

In other Disney XD news, the network will host a Phineas and Ferb spy-themed marathon on Super Bowl Sunday, February 7, 8a-5p.  They episodes will showcase Perry the Platypus; the family pet who doubles as secret Agent P.  Created by and executive produced by Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh, the animated comedy series is directed by Povenmire and Zac Moncrief.

Israel’s Dori Media Group inks a deal for its teen-targeted vampire series, Split (45×30), with Boomerang channel in Latin America, which is part of Turner Broadcasting System Latin America.  Created for Israeli cable platform HOT’s VOD, Split revolves around 15-year-old Ella, who has always felt she was different from the other kids.  When Ella finally discovers why she is different, she also faces the age-old vampire and human conflict as she is forced to choose between her love for Omer, her human friend, and Leo the vampire.  Launched seven months ago, Split has been acquired by 32 countries and is also now airing on Israel’s The Children’s Channel.  A second season of Slit, produced by Dori Media Darset, will debut in Q2 2010.

Another kid-targeted social network launches.  SpaceFace ( www.spaceface.com ) is a new space-centric virtual world aimed at kids/tweens 4-14.  SpaceFace features games, private messaging (SpaceChat), and a way to earn and collect points (SpaceGold), which can be used in its shopping area (SpaceMall).  The also has 24/7 content monitors.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Licensing agency Gator Group completes a new deal for Cosmic DebrisEmily the Strange with Italy’s Pier SpA for a new line of teen and women-targeted apparel based on the property.  The line will include a range of streetwear and accessories that will launch in Europe in fall 2010.  Emily the Strange was created in 1993 by artist Rob Reger, President/Cosmic Debris.

Iconix Brand Group renews its exclusive partnership with Britney Spears to serve for a second year as a spokesperson for its Candie’s brand, which is available only at Kohl’s Department Stores and Kohls.com.  Under the deal Spears will appear in the Candie’s only at Kohl’s marketing efforts throughout 2010, details of which are forthcoming.

THQ plans to release SpongeBob’s Boating Bash, a new demolition derby-style multi-player video game, this spring 2010.  Based on Nickelodeon‘s SpongeBob SquarePants property, the family-targeted title is currently in development for Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi.

RATINGS

Monday night saw Nickelodeon set new records with the premiere a new iCarly (8p) episode, iSaved Your Life, that became the series’ most-watched telecast ever episode with Total Viewers and kid demos, and served as a lead-in to the network’s new live-action music series Big Time Rush (8:30p), which now stands as its highest rated live-action series premiere with all Total Viewers and kid demos.

  • The new iCarly episode also serves as the new highest-rated telecast for the series among Total Viewers 11.2 million, K2-11 5.7 million, K6-11 4.7 million and Tweens 9-14 4.5 million.  The Monday episode beats the previous iCarly record among Totally Viewers 8.9 million set on December 5, 2009.
  • Big Time Rush series also set live-action series premiere records for the network with Total Viewers 6.8 million, K2-11 3.8 million, K6-11 3.1 million, and Tweens 9-14 2.8 million.
