Cynopsis: Kids!

09/29/08

Good morning. It’s Monday, September 29, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

BBC Worldwide restructures its kid’s business on the heels of naming Neil Ross Russell as its Managing Director in August.  First off the division has been renamed Children’s and Licensing and is being restructured into three main areas, one each focusing on preschool, pre-teens and adult licensing.  Additionally, BBCWW expands its relationship with partner Ragdoll in a new deal that will see BBCWW oversee North American TV sales and licensing for Ragdoll-produced series including Teletubbies and In the Night Garden.  BBCWW already reps the global distribution rights, excluding UK broadcast, for all Ragdoll properties.  Finally, BBWW Children’s and Licensing is seeking a new Global Head of Licensing for the division.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Well, rumors being what they are  … word all over the internet is that George Clooney will star as The Lone Ranger in Disney‘s new movie version of the famed tale of the old west.  Last week Disney announced that Johnny Depp would star as Tonto in the feature film that is set for release in 2010.  The Lone Ranger was the source of material for series on film, radio and TV, with the best known version being the TV series (1949-57), which starred Clayton Moore’s as the Lone Ranger (with the exception of a few years when John Hart took over as the masked one, followed by Moore’s return to the role) and Jay Silverheels as his faithful friend Tonto.

Director Ridley Scott says that Russell Crowe will take on two roles, The Sheriff of Nottingham and Robin Hood, in the new movie adaptation of Robin Hood, according to an interview with MTV.com.  The movie is flips the well-known story around so that Robin Hood is the bad guy.  The news here is that Crowe, who has long been attached to star in the movie, will play dual roles.
