Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, September 28, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

BRB Internacional is working on a new preschool animated series Zookaboo! (104×2), it hopes will be the first 3D Stereoscopic series, which it will offer at MipJunior and Mipcom.  Zookaboo is created using real images and 3D HD animation and employs 3D Stereoscopic technology to create special effects.  By wearing special glasses to watch the show viewers will get the heightened 3D effects when viewing it on TV, low-demand internet video and Blu-ray.  Each episode of the series features a character hiding in a box and the voices of kids guessing what is in the box (“do you have hair? Legs?”), with the animal answering along the way (visuals corresponding to the guesses/answers are featured) – until the kid(s) guess correctly and animal reveals itself.  A co-production with Catalonia-based Screen 21 in cooperation with French design studio Image In, Zookaboo will be available for air at the end of 2010.  BRB Internacional manages all rights for Zookaboo worldwide (except in France and the Middle East).

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

NBA San Antonio Spurs star Tony Parker inks a deal with French animation studio Tele Images Kids to develop Basketball Adventures (working title), a new 2D animated series featuring Parker’s image, per Variety.  The program follows Parker and a street basketball team, comprised of five teens (boys and girls), as they travel across the US in a tournament.  Each episode of the series will be set in a different city and reflect the various culture and lifestyles of that city.  Directed by Franck Michel, the series is set to being production in January with a budget of $8.8 million and will, per the report, feature guest stars including Parker’s TV star wife Eva Longoria.  The series has been pre-bought by M6 (France) for air in 2011.  Tele Images Kids is a unit of Zodiak.

MORE KIDS STUFF

CBBC unveils its new season of new and returning TV and online programming (series and specials) aimed at K6-12:

  • CBBC is teaming with comedian Johnny Vegas to develop the comedy series Dead Puppets Society (13×28) for 2011.  The series will follow Johnny as he juggles his showbiz career with his secret life as a puppet hunter as he fights to protect the world.  The series will feature his sidekicks Rory and puppet Fleabag.  Dead Puppets Society is being produced by Woolyback and Double Z in Dublin.
  • The Singing Coach presented by Gareth Malone (12×28)  Malone (The Choir) takes a group of novice singers and works with them  ultimately giving them a chance to perform in front of a huge audience.  Set for transmission in 2010, the series is produced by Twenty Twenty, produced by Helen Soden for CBBC.
  • Newsround, the UK daily news series for kids, will feature two specials this winter  one about bullying (November) and the other focusing on the dangers of the internet (February).  The long running series will also welcome two new on air members to the team: Leah Gooding from Radio 1 Newsbeat and 1Xtra and Hayley Cutts who has worked on Panorama.
  • Kid chefs get their chance on Junior MasterChef, with MasterChef judge John Torode and Nadia Sawalha serving as hosts.   Based on MasterChef, Junior MasterChef will feature some of the UK’s best young cooks competing when it airs in 2010.
  • Drama on CBBC  will see the launch of eight dramas including the third season of the Sarah Jane Adventures, which will feature a guest appearance form the Doctor (David Tennant), the return of Tracey Beaker Returns (13 new episodes).  New dramas include: Spirit Warriors, an adventure series based on an ancient Chinese legend, the mixes live-action and CG characters; My Almost Famous Family, a musical comedy series; Ingenious a one-ff about three kids that discover an ancient bottle with a genie inside; Jinx about a modern-day Cinderella that is based on Fiona Dunbar’s Lulu Baker book series; Dani’s House; Dead Normal (working title) about precocious teen sisters that happen to be ghosts; and the spy series M.I. High.
  • Hounded (13×28)  is a sketch comedy series featuring comedian Rufus Hound that combines live action and CGI  when Hound is sucked into a parallel universe where the world is filled with special effects.
  • Roboidz (13×30) (working title)  a new game show set in the year 2110  when Roboidz have taken over the earth and turned on their human creators.  Only kids can save the human race.
  • Two new CBBC science series one, Blast Lab, starring Richard Hammond (Top Gear), and the other features Dan Wright and Steve Marsh on space adventures with Professor Brain Cox in Space Hoppers.
  • Also coming to CBBC is Relic (still in development)  Set for 2010, the series brings the history housed in the British Museum to life for kids visiting the museum at night; Big Babies is a new comedy that mixes live action, puppetry and CG imagery.  The programs stars two 10-month-old babies with heads of grown men; and Aardman Animations‘ new series, Shaun the Sheep, bows this fall.

Nerd Corps Entertainment is heading back into production this fall on the original series The League of Super Evil for a second season (26×30).  Commissioned by YTV (Canada), the new The League of Super Evil season is slated for a spring/summer 2010 delivery.  The most recent sales include Nickelodeon in the Nordic territories, Spain, Portugal and Benelux, Noga (Israel) and MBC (the Middle East), all of which signed on for both seasons. Cartoon Network Asia, which picked up both broadcast and merchandising rights for 25 countries in the region including Australia and New Zealand, has also now signed up for season two.  Additionally, Nerd Corp continues to develop and expand its interactive online world for the property, which beginning this fall will feature a multi-player online collectible card game and the recently launched create-your-own-villain avatar and evil lair system.

The Jim Henson Company enters into new broadcast and home entertainment deals for its CGI animated preschool series Dinosaur Trail (40×30 or 80×11).  Henson completes broadcast deals with Nickelodeon (Australia) and Al Jazeera (Middle East) and a home entertainment, TV and merchandising partner Selecta Vision in Spain.  Henson will offer the series at Mipcom.

Foothill Entertainment will showcase the new CGI animated series Raz & Benny (78×7) at Mipcom looking for co-production and pre-sale opportunities.  Created by Simon Hodgkiss, founder/President SphDigital, UK, the short-form non-verbal series is a buddy comedy that follows two mice (Raz & Benny) on their various big missions, which finds the inseparable duo posing as international spies, racecar drivers, and expert explorers in the deepest jungle as they beat the odds each time.

Shaftesbury Sales Company signs three new deals for its teen-targeted comedy Overruled!  Picking up the first season (13×30) of Overruled are Turner Latin America, ZigZap/Camal + (Poland), e-junior (UAE), and Noga (Israel).  Shaftesbury will showcase season three (13×30 new episodes) of the series at Mipcom.  Overruled is produced by Shaftesbury Films in association with Family Channel, with the participation of the Canadian Television Fund, The Astral Media Harold Greenburg Fund, Rogers Cable Network Fund, The Shaw Rocket Fund and the Independent Production Fund and with the assistance of the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit and the Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit.

BBC launches a new Red Button interactive service for CBeebies, which follows the launch of the CBeebies iPlayer earlier this year.  By pressing the red button on the CBeebies channel kids can head to an interactive area that features games based on the channel’s series and a Birthdays and Star of the Week interactive areas, where parents can request their kid’s name be featured on screen.  The new Red Button CBeebies design was developed by BBC’s TV Platforms as a place to house all CBeebies content in one place and make it simple for kids to find their favorite TV content and games regardless or what platform they are using (e.g. digital satellite, cable or terrestrial).  Additionally, on Sky they can listen to CBeebies radio and Virgin Media customers will be able to access kid’s content on the BBC iPlayer.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Italy’s Atlantyca Entertainment heads to London as a first-time exhibitor at Brand Licensing Europe 2009 this week.  Atlantyca will show off its slate of brands including Le Petit Prince, Tea Sisters and three versions of Geronimo Stilton, Geronimo Stilton: Classic, Geronimo Stilton, The Animated Series (26×22) and Geronimo Stilton’s The Kingdom Of Fantasy.

WordWorld launches its first iPhone application, Build A Word ($3), at Apple’s iTunes store.  The Based on the PBS series WordWorld, the Build A Word app helps kids learn about reading, spelling and writing and make words come to life with the help of WordFriends from the series.

Weta Workshop (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) will launch the WotWots toy line in the UK at the London Zoo on Tuesday, September 29.  With Hasbro as the licensing agent and master toy licensee for the WotWots, the toy line features mini plush, talking plush, vinyl figures, feature plush among other items, will be available in the UK at retail from October 1.  The line has already debuted in Australia and New Zealand.  The toy line is based on the preschool aimed WotWots TV series, which is produced by Pukeko Pictures and made at Richard Taylor’s Weta Workshop.  Pukeko Pictures is a partnership between Taylor and author/kid’s TV creator, Martin Baynton.  Taylor and Baynton previously teamed to create Jane and the Dragon.
