Good morning, it’s Monday, September 28, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The FCC’s new neutrality rules are already causing some finger pointing. AT&T filed a letter with the FCC on Friday accusing the Google Voice web-based calling system of violating net neutrality principles. AT&T argues that Google Voice, which enables users to consolidate several voice lines and forward calls to a single number, unfairly discriminates by restricting outgoing calls to some numbers such as adult chat lines and conference-call centers. In a blog posting, Google counsel Richard Whitt notes that the FCC’s net-neutrality principles “apply only to broadband carriers – not Web-based software applications. Even though the FCC does not have jurisdiction over software applications, AT&T apparently wants to use the regulatory process to undermine web-based competition and innovation.”

Warner Music Group has completed a deal with YouTube that will bring back music videos from such prominent artists as Madonna and U2 to the site, reports Ad Age. Warner Music pulled the videos from YouTube last December after the two parties could not agree on a new revenue sharing arrangement.
Turner Sports’ NASCAR.com is reaching out to race fans on MySpace with a new community page, integrating the 80k member NASCAR.com community with MySpace, along with several other social media feeds. The site enables racing fans to embed photos and videos, create photo galleries and participate in contests, polls and scheduled online events.
Zookaboo, a new pre-school targeted series in pre-production by Spain’s BRB Internacional, hopes to become the first series to be shot in 3D Stereoscopic. The show will use the new visual effects technology, which requires the use of special glasses, to broadcast in 3D across TV, low-demand internet video and BluRay. Zookaboo is a co-production between BRB and Catalonian company Screen 21, with French design studio Image In contributing.

It features more than 600 elements including promo opens and closes, video bumps for IDs and support messaging and web elements. PBS stations will debut the new package in conjunction with the Sept. 27 premiere of Ken Burns’ The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.
In its battle to match Verizon’s FiOS fiber-to-the-home service, Time Warner Cable launched its Docsis 3.0 Wideband Internet service in New York, its first major market deployment. The 50 Mbps down/5Mbps up service will be priced at $100/month and is available now in Manhattan (below 79th Street), Staten Island and Queens (Fresh Meadows, Forest Hills and South Flushing). The service will be available throughout TWC’s entire NYC footprint by next Spring.
News Corp.’s IGN is acquiring independent content site What They Play, a gaming-themed news site helps parents determine which games are appropriate for their kids. The site was founded by former Ziff Davis employees John Davison and Ira Becker.
Shortened URL web addresses that are crucial to microblogging service Twitter could end up being used by malware authors to infect computers, warns computer security firm Symantec. The company released a video Friday on the dangers of clicking on the short URLs that link users from a tweet to a story, photo or video. One way to protect against such evildoers is to utilize browser plug-ins that will check a shortened URL for you and show you the final URL before you click through.
Social networkers who frequent Facebook, MySpace or LinkedIn tend to be more affluent and more urban than average Americans, according to the Nielsen Claritas service. Carved into “Young Digerati” or “Beltway Boomers” segments, social networkers also vary in demographic makeup depending on which services they frequent:
- Facebook users are largely upscale – the top third of lifestyle segments relative to affluence were 25% more likely to use Facebook than those in the lower third
- The bottom third segments related to affluence are 37% more likely to use MySpace than those in the top third
- Users of Facebook were also much more likely to use professional-themed LinkedIn than those who use MySpace
Despite data slowdown concerns, AT&T finally enabled multimedia messaging (MMS) for 3G and 3GS iPhone users. MMS enables iPhone customers to embed photos and videos within their text messages. The feature can be turned on by updating your carrier settings. while re-synching the phone with iTunes.
Robotvision is a new iPhone app powered by Microsoft’s Bing search engine that allows you search for restaurants, bars, museums and other points of interest by sourcing geotagged Flickr posts from users in the area.
Mobile marketing firm 2ergo has appointed John Orlando as Managing Director of the Americas for 2ergo. He begins immediately and will be based out the company’s New York office.
CBS Interactive CEO Quincy Smith joined the chorus of critics against Hulu in an internal email sent to staffers that was “leaked” to the blog TechCrunch. In it he suggests that this fall’s ratings declines may be a result of “reckless Hulu streams,” and that authentication (which CBS has committed to in Time Warner Cable and Comcast’s TV Everywhere initiative,) may be a “nice option” with which to limit the erosion. Whether it was intended for public consumption or not, the missive outlines the conundrum the networks now face regarding their much beloved online video portals Hulu and TV.com. While visitors, usage and ad revenue all continue to trend upward on the sites – TV.com just reported its ninth consecutive month of growth with monthly gains in unique viewers (16%), video streams and minutes (19%) – the networks don’t want to wait too long to either begin charging for content or to start packing more ads within the video.
