FOX signed an expanded renewal agreement with Chef Gordon Ramsay which keeps him as host of Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares for at least two additional seasons, as well as an option for a third series. The pact also gives Ramsay the opportunity to host a cooking special sometime during this season. Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares are produced by Granada America and A. Smith and Co. The third proposed series would be similar to a show Ramsay is involved with now for UK’s Channel 4 called Man Camp where guys are put through physical and intellectual challenges and learn to cook at the same time. The upcoming special would also mirror a live program Ramsay hosted for Channel 4 last January allowing viewers to cook at home along with Ramsay.

Season premiere of Saturday Night Live this past weekend, featuring Olympian Michael Phelps as host and a cameo by Tina Fey as VP Candidate Sarah Palin, drew in 7.4/18 in metered markets, reports Nielsen. That number marks the highest rated episode since September 29, 2001 with Reese Witherspoon hosting, which was also the first SNL episode following the 9/11 attacks.  National numbers for the SNL season debut will be out on Thursday.

Elsewhere with Palin – the real Sarah Palin – ABC News’ Charles Gibson’s interview with Palin on 20/20 last Friday night pulled in 7.9 million viewers, the highest number for that news program in more than six months. In the key Adult demo, the program averaged a 2.1/6 A18-49, per fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen.

Cake Distribution and FRESH TV made a global distribution agreement for the animated series Total Drama Action from FRESH TV. This second series, now in production with an expected debut launch next spring, picks up where the series Total Drama Island finishes and takes 15 of the original contestants to a deserted film studio lot for even more challenges and the opportunity to win a larger prize. Total Drama Island is currently airing in the U.S. on The Cartoon Network and was commissioned by TELETOON Canada.

Prior to the Primetime Emmy Awards on September 21, ABC will air Jimmy Kimmel’s Big Night of Stars special at 7p on both coasts, according to B&C. The line-up of stars includes an introduction by Barbara Walters and interviews with Ryan Seacrest, Tracy Morgan, Salma Hayek and Michael Phelps. Several other stars will make appearances such as William Shatner, Rachael Ray, Regis Philbin, Kelly Ripa and more.

A group of media, entertainment and consumer electronics companies will announce the “Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE)” today, a push to set standards and usage rules to insure interoperability of digital content on multiple devices and platforms. Devices built to DECE specs would be able to play DECE-branded content and work with any DECE-certified service, eliminating annoying territorial divides. CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Life is not a picnic as we well know but it now seems that BskyB will not have any picnic.  The U.K. company’s plans for its over-and-over delayed Picnic digital terrestrial pay TV service have been under scrutiny from the Ofcom watchdog org for the past year and a half due to BSkyB’s rather large presence in the overall English pay TV realm.  Due to the regulatory questioning, BSkyB had decided to stop its Picnic go-ahead efforts until Ofcom issues more approval.  The 4-channel Picnic was to have consisted of entertainment, movie, news and sports networks on the Freeview platform.  The decision to not take the Picnic “outside” may result in the loss of nearly 30 jobs at BskyB. Thursday – A18-49 Analysis: FOX was leader of the pack Thursday night at 2.6/8 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. At 8p, CBS’ Big Brother was in charge at 2.7/9 while Hole in the Wall on FOX officially made its debut with two back-to-back episodes that posted a 2.0/7 during 8p and a 2.6/8 at 830p. FOX was on fire at 9p as Kitchen Nightmares won with 2.9/8. Then at 10p, CBS was #1 with Flashpoint at 2.2/6.
