TBS announced late last week it is renewing My Boys for a fourth season, the comedy starring Jordana Spiro who plays a Chicago-based sports columnist. TBS ordered nine new episodes for 2010. The series is from creator Betsy Thomas and is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Pariah with Thomas, Gavin Polone and Jamie Tarses serving as executive producers.

ABC Family picked up a sophomore season of the frosh comedy 10 Things I Hate About You about the Stratford sisters, Kat and Bianca. Ten new episodes are on the docket from creator/executive producer Carter Covington. ABC Family though, did not pursue more of the comedy Ruby & the Rockits, opting to conclude the series after its original 10-episode run.

Showtime heads to The Real L Word: Los Angeles, a new nine-episode, one-hour reality series about a group of real-life, well-known lesbians as they lead their glamorous daily lives. Ilene Chaiken, who was the creator/executive producer of Showtime’s drama series The L Word is executive producing the new series along with Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz of Magical Elves. The Real L World: Los Angeles will premiere in 2010.

In other Showtime news, the premium network debuts Lock ‘n Load a new six-episode 30m reality series October 21 at 8p. The series, staying politically neutral, centers on The Shootist gun store in Englewood, CO where hidden cameras survey the many gun transactions revealing varied reasons why people purchase fire arms. The series is produced by Authentic Entertainment with Tom Rogan and Lauren Lexton as executive producers.

This Wednesday’s two-hour season finale of America’s Got Talent on NBC at 8p features a live performance by Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle. Earlier this year, Boyle entranced the world with her voice during an audition on Britain’s Got Talent show. Though she didn’t place first on Britain’s Got Talent, Boyle now has a recording contract with Sony BMG and is working on her debut album which has already reached #1 via Amazon.com’s bestselling music list through pre-orders. FremantleMedia N.A. and SYCO Television produce America’s Got Talent.

Larry Gelbart, 81, the comedy writer who developed the classic TV show M*A*S*H, died of cancer last Friday in Los Angeles. Mr. Gelbart wrote the pilot for M*A*S*H in 1972 based on the 1970 movie of the same name from director Robert Altman about smart, funny doctors operating on wounded soldiers during the Korean War. Mr. Gelbart wrote additional episodes of M*A*S*H and served as executive script consultant and additionally shared an Emmy award with producer/director Gene Reynolds when M*A*S*H topped for outstanding comedy in 1974. Other major achievements during his career included co-authoring a book called A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum which became a hit Broadway musical in the 1960s and co-writing the 1982 movie Tootsie.
