Cynopsis: Kids!
09/14/09
Good morning. It’s Monday, September 14, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Fred Seibert and his Frederator Studios inks a multi-year deal with Sony Pictures Animation to develop animated feature films. Seibert, formerly President of Hanna-Barbera Productions, launched the Frederator animation studio in 1998 and has developed animated properties including The Fairly OddParents, Dexter’s Laboratory, My Life as a Teenage Robot, The Powerpuff Girls and Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! Frederator is currently in production on Fanboy & Chum Chum, the CG animated series launches this fall on Nickelodeon, and Adventure Time at Cartoon Network set for May 2010. Additionally, Frederator is developing a feature film based on the animated series Samurai Jack at Paramount Picture with Bad Robot Productions. Seibert also launched Next New Networks and served as the original creative director of MTV: Music Television and later toiled for Nickelodeon and helped create Nick-at-Nite. Sony Pictures Animation’s, which recently inked a development first look deal with The Gotham Group, newest kid/family aimed movie, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, opens nationwide on September 18.
A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM THE WALTER KAITZ FOUNDATION
Those words from Muhammad Ali capture the sense of purpose that has made diversity part of the business DNA for the 2009 Walter Kaitz Foundation Diversity Champions. Congratulations to Comcast Corp. and Turner Broadcasting System. Please join us at cable’s pre-eminent fundraising event to honor them, and to unite behind our industry’s commitment to diversity. With your support, we’re all champions.
Some of the news out of Walt Disney Studios’ fan-targeted D23 Expo marketing event includes:
- It’s official – we are getting a new version of the 1968 animated Beatles’ movie Yellow Submarine. Disney Studios completes a deal with Apple Corps to develop a new 3D performance capture adaptation of Yellow Submarine that will be penned and directed by Robert Zemeckis. The new movie will keep all 16 Beatles songs and recordings featured in the original movie under license from Sony/ATV Music Publishing and EMI-Capitol Records respectively. Produced by United Artists and king Features Syndicate, the original movie was directed by George Dunning with art direction and design by Heinz Edelmann and featured music by The Beatles and their animated likenesses (but not their voices).
- Disney Studios is partnering with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro to launch the new production banner Disney Double Dare You (DDY), which will develop new animated feature films for all ages. All DDY movies will be produced under the guidance of del Toro, who will also direct some of the films. The first project in developing is Trollhunters, an original story by del Toro that he will also produce. Del Toro is currently directing back-to-back movie adaptations of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, which are set for release in 2011 and 2012.
- Appearing in his full Jack Sparrow pirate regalia Johnny Depp appeared at D23 Expo offering that the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie is titled On Stranger Tides and will release summer 2011.
- Director Tim Burton will indeed create a feature-length version of his short film Frankenweenie (1984).
- The new Muppet movie project will, according to Studio head Dick Cook, be titled The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made. The movie features a screenplay by Jason Segal (How I Met Your Mother, Forgetting Sarah Marshall). The movie plot, an old concept originated by Jim Henson, finds Gonzo directing a Hollywood movie and not managing its budget very well.
- Joining the voiceover cast of Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3 are Jeff Garlin, Whoopi Goldberg and Bonnie Hunt. Who they will play remains a secret.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Ian James Corlett, Skywriter Media and Entertainment Group and Atomic Cartoons are partnering to develop a new animated TV series, Elliott & Lucy, for a Canadian broadcaster. Based on characters from Corlett’s book E Is for Ethics: How to Teach Kids About Morals, Values, and What Matters Most, the series follows the brother/sister duo as they learn about life and even have some fun. The book will be published by Atria Books/Simon & Schuster this December. A voice-over actor, Corlett also created the animated series Being Ian and was co-creator of Yvon of the Yukon.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Nickelodeon is set to premiere five new episodes of its animated series The Mighty B! Monday-Friday September 21-25 at 5:3op. The series is co-created and co-executive produced by Amy Poehler, Cynthia True and Erik Wiese. Poehler also serves as the voice of the shows star Bessie Higgenbottom, while True and Wiese also serve as Story Editor and Creative Director respectively. The Mighty B! is produced at Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, California.
This weekend saw MTV Networks International’s Emerging Markets group launching a Nickelodeon branded programming block on commercial terrestrial broadcaster TV2 (Hungary). Airing Saturday and Sunday mornings, the 2-hour block features Nickelodeon titles such as Dora the Explorer, Wonder Pets, Avatar The Last Airbender and SpongeBob SquarePants. This marks the first Nick branded block on a terrestrial channel in Hungary.
