Cynopsis: DIGITAL

09/14/09

Good morning, it’s Monday, September 14, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Look out Nielsen. A coalition of 14 media giants including Time Warner, News Corp., Walt Disney and NBC Universal – calling itself the Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement (CIMM) – announced plans to team up to develop new methods to measure TV viewing across multiple platforms. The group plans to mine set top box data, measure internet video consumption and analyze cross-platform usage to gain a more accurate picture of how audiences now consume premium content. The companies have agreed to make contributions of at least $1 million combined to build new research apparatus. “The velocity of today’s technology developments enables us to demand a more sophisticated measurement model that provides greater accountability and accuracy to increase the effectiveness of our clients’ media and marketing investments,” wrote Nick Brien, President and CEO, Interpublic Group’s Mediabrands about CIMM’s missions. “We can no longer subscribe to outdated perceptions of engagement.”

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

If the new Rock Band game whetted your appetite for more Fab Four content, you’re in luck. Disney, Apple Corps and director Robert Zemeckis announced they are departing on their own magical mystery tour to remake Yellow Submarine as a 3D animated feature. The film will incorporate 16 Beatles tunes and be put together by ImageMovers Digital, Disney’s performance capture animation studio.

In more animation news, Sony Pictures Animation announced a deal to develop animated features with Fred Seibert and his Frederator Studios studio, one of the founding Next New Networks micro-nets. Frederator’s credits include Butch Hartman’s The Fairly Odd Parents, Genndy Tartakovsky’s Dexter’s Laboratory, and Craig McCraken’s The Powerpuff Girls.

Ready for a walk down memory lane? The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation has raided the non-profit Archive of American Television to put together a newly redesigned online interview archive section at EmmyTVLegends.org. Browse interviews of legends including Mary Tyler Moore, the late Tim Russert, the incomparable Rita Moreno and former Cagney & Lacey star Sharon Gless, who manages to steal many of the scenes she graces in USA’s Burn Notice. Browse by name, show, profession and topic. The Academy has also put together a few embeddable clips of interview excerpts to give users a taste of the over 2,000 hours of oral interviews available to license.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Girl2Watch.com is a new site founded by former AOL and Facebook marketer Vince Thompson, profiling up-and-comers in Entertainment and new media. The idea is to help raise the profiles of personalities such as Marina Orlova (creator of Hot For Words) by generating safe, snark-free interactive content to syndicate out to social networks including Twitter and Facebook.

MTV.com teamed up with social media companies Radian6 and Stamen to bring fans real-time online Twitter visualization to accompany last night’s airing of the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. A custom dashboard built by Radian 6 tracked tweets about designated VMA personalities while a visual application and user interface created by Stamen expanded celebrity images as their Twitter tag cloud activity increased. Video blogger iJustine (Justine Ezarik) served as official VMA “Twitter Correspondent.”

Music and entertainment photographer Frank Micelotta has launched PictureGroup, a digital media production company specializing in the production and web-based distribution, licensing, and monetization of still photography and video. PictureGroup begins with a strategic alliance with The AP to license photos via the AP Images platform. Micelotta will run PictureGroup with Paul Melcher, former CEO of Rex USA and VP of Sales for DigitalRailroad.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Twitter amended its Terms of Services late last week to give the start-up more leeway when trying to sell advertising to its 45 million monthly users. “We leave the door open for advertising. We’d like to keep our options open, as we’ve said before,” wrote founder Biz Stone in Twitter’s official blog entry discussing the changes. The amendments relate specifically to ownership of specific tweets; while the service reserves the right to “use, copy, reproduce, process, adapt, modify, publish, transmit, display and distribute” (and advertise against) posts, ownership of tweets belong exclusively to their authors.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Online video platform Brightcove announced that it has doubled the size of its global partnership program in the past 7 months to include more than 200 companies in the areas of content management, transcoding, email, content and live streaming.

Internet phone service Skype has shuttered its third-party application Developer Program, citing lack of user interest. EBay sold a controlling share of Skype to an investor group led by Silver Lake earlier this month.

Edgeware and Inlet Technologies announced interoperability between Edgeware’s Web TV servers and the latter’s Spinnaker live streaming appliance for delivering video over the internet. The combination supports both Microsoft Smooth Streaming and Apple Live HTTP Streaming.

France-based IPTV set-top maker Netgem unveiled NetgemTV, the company’s media center software platform complete with open APIs and a software developers kit to attract third party services.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

EA’s
Madden NFL 10 launched for the iPhone for the upper echelon price of $10. (The game is pretty impressive for such a small screen however, with an easy to figure touch interface, head-to-head gameplay and excellent graphics.)

ExerciseTV is utilizing the iPhone 3.0 platform to launch a new subscription business. The new $2/month ExerciseTV Trainer App allows you to watch exercise videos, track your work-outs and log your progress. The app is taking aim at Medical Production’s popular iFitness App, which leads the category by offering graphics and instructions for more than 150 exercises.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Former 8020 Media VP Rob Klingman has been hired as National Digital Director for Time Inc.’s SI.com.

The World Summit Award for new media has tapped Catherine Warren, President of FanTrust Entertainment Strategiesm for its executive board of directors. The WSA is a United Nations initiative developed to recognize and showcase digital content and innovation.

Laura Relovsky will become Executive Producer of New York-based music and visual effects studio Fluid. She reports to Marc Schwartz, Managing Partner.

Sometimes less is more. The world’s leading social networking platform unveiled a preview of Facebook Lite in the U.S. and India, a streamlined version of the site with no chat and no apps (sorry Farmville and Mafia Wars fanatics) – designed for mobile platforms, casual users and slow connections. This will inevitably be described as yet another ploy to compete with Twitter, but it’s really just a smart way to focus on the site’s core competency, as well as to hook users in less technically-advanced places. (Roughly 70% of Facebook’s 250 million users live outside of the U.S.) Offering the ability to post messages, photos, events and updates is probably enough to keep most casual Facebook users happy, as well as cut down on bandwidth costs in the process. With such costs ramping up for many in the online content business, speeding up and slimming down could become a larger trend.
