  • Additionally, Opus Distribution will be pre-selling two films, Locked Away and Bus Stop Conspiracy.

During MIPCOM, DLT Entertainment announced it will preview to broadcasters the new comedic mockumentary, The Academy based on the fictional Clapham Academy of Creative Arts headlined by Sir Ian McKellen. DLT is co-producing the project with 2act Productions.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Latino owned and managed Maya Entertainment, whose goal is increasing the US Latino film-attending audience, made a deal with iN DEMAND Networks, effective immediately. The new arrangement will have Maya Entertainment films now available by VOD to cable subscribers via major cable operators across the US.

~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ~

Producer Chris Lilley and Princess Pictures are beginning pre-production on the new comedy series Angry Boys in Australia this month. The 12-episode 30m series is a co-production of HBO and ABC TV in association with the BBC. Lilley and Princess Pictures are behind the previous comedies Summer Heights High and We Can Be Heroes.

NBC finalized a competitive bid against ABC and CBS to pick up a spec project from Warner Bros. and J.J. Abrams’s Bad Robot about a husband and wife spy team cites THR. NBC gave the drama project a pilot commitment with a major penalty attached. This project reunites Abrams with the spy genre after his successful turn with ABC’s Alias.  Furthermore, NBC made a deal involving the crime drama project Midnighters based on Alloy Entertainment’s book series and produced by Warner Bros. TV. Chad Hodge will write the project which is receiving a script commitment. Hodge will executive produce with Alloy’s Bob Levy and Leslie Morgenstein. Midnighters is about a group of people, all born at midnight who solve crimes during the 25th hour of each day.

Also at NBC, the network cut back its midseason drama series Day One to a four-hour miniseries. Originally, NBC had planned a 13-episode series though after reviewing the production budget, NBC executives decided to run it as a miniseries instead. Day One’s creator Jesse Alexander was involved in the decision and NBC has said it will keep the door open to making Day One a full series particularly if it proves successful. Day One is still scheduled to debut following NBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics. Day One is produced by Universal Media Studios.

Comedy Central gave a pilot order nod to the 30m project Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down, reports THR. Based on the 2006 independent film from Paul Sapiano, the pilot is a how-to guide for 20-somethings living in the city with a narrator offering tips. Sapiano will executive produce along with John Lynch and Luke Greenfield who will also direct.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   Comcast‘s potential purchase of NBC Universal has analysts salivating over what the cable giant could bring to advertisers in terms of reach and addressable set-top-box-based services. The tie-up would give Comcast access to more than 45 million customers across TV, the web and phone services. Gaining more channels would help protect Comcast against the erosion of live viewing, notes AdAge, as well as position it against upcoming revenue sharing shifts that may involve the splitting of DVR rental fees with programmers.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: DQ Entertainment (DQE) unveils plans to produce the new live-action series, Toomai The Story of an Elephant Boy (26×30) for kids 14 and under.  Based on Rudyard Kipling’s Toomai of the Elephants, which is part of his The Jungle Book stories, and will be entirely produced by DQE on location in India with a budget of between $11 million – $12.4 million USD.  DQE plans to raise funds for the production through pre-sales, some of which are currently in discussion.  DQE is showcasing the trailer for the series at Mipcom this week.  Set for release in early 2011, Toomai The Story of an Elephant Boy is supported by ABC (Australia) and other broadcasters.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.
