Good morning. It’s Monday, October 5, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
DQ Entertainment (DQE) unveils plans to produce the new live-action series, Toomai The Story of an Elephant Boy (26×30) for kids 14 and under. Based on Rudyard Kipling’s Toomai of the Elephants, which is part of his The Jungle Book stories, and will be entirely produced by DQE on location in India with a budget of between US$11 million – $12.4 million. DQE plans to raise funds for the production through pre-sales, some of which are currently in discussion. DQE is showcasing the trailer for the series at Mipcom this week. Set for release in early 2011, Toomai The Story of an Elephant Boy is supported by ABC (Australia) and other broadcasters.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Director/producer/writer Sam Raimi‘s Ghost House Pictures expands to include the new Spooky Pictures banner that will produce scary family-targeted movies, per Variety. The first Spooky Pictures title will be The Substitute, which is a remake of a Danish movie that will be directed by Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism o family Rose) and co-financed by Columbia Pictures, which has a first look deal with Spooky Pictures. Derrickson is co-writing the script with Paul Harris Boardman, who co-penned Emily Rose with him. Spooky plans to finance, develop and produce its family movies under Ghost House Pictures, which has a deal with Mandate Pictures.
Peace Arch Entertainment Group partners with producer Barnet Bain to acquire the movie rights to the kid’s book, Milton’s Secret: An Adventure of Discovery through Then, When, and the Power Of Now, by spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle and Robert S. Friedman. The plan is to adapt the movie as a live-action family-aimed movie.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Hit Entertainment is showing off its new look for Bob the Builder property with its new CG-animated series Ready Steady, Build, which will premiere in early 2010 on Nick Jr. in the UK. The new format focuses on characters and locations that help build familiarity and play patterns for the audience, which can translate to new consumer product lines. Additionally, Hit renews its EMEA Master Toy licensee deal with RC2 for Bob the Builder, with plans to launch the new line in spring 2009. Martin Yaffe International continues to serve as Hit’s UK toy partner.
Nickelodeon celebrates King Julien Day on Columbus Day, October 12, with a three-hour marathon of The Penguins of Madagascar, 5-8p, with a new episode of the series premiering at 8p.
Aardman Animations gets a pick-up from CBeebies for 26×10 more episodes of its preschool series Timmy Time. The new order follows the 52 episodes already in production. The new series is salted to being production in June 2010. Four new Timmy Time licensing deals in the UK have also been completed: Next (apparel); Blues Clothing (outerwear, leisure); Worlds Apart for Ready (beds and kid’s furniture); Mookie Toys (playballs). These partners join Vivid Imaginations as the master toy partner for the property. Aardman has also completed a licensing deal with Golden Bear (wooden toys) and Trade Mark Collections (bags and accessories).
RDF Rights, a division of RDF Media Group, completes deals for Yo Gabba Gabba! Produced by Magic Store and Wildbrain, season three of the live-action preschool series has been acquired by Disney Latin America, Treehouse TV (Canada), while seasons one and two are picked up by ATV (Hong Kong) and Mediacorp (Singapore) for Okto Channel. RDFR has sold Yo Gabba Gabba to 10+ international territories, with broadcast deals including ABC (Australia), Nick Australia, Nickelodeon Asia and Hop! TV (Israel).
Treehouse (Canada) picks up the preschool series Manon (52×7 HD), a Canadian/French co-production between Cyber Group Studios, Planet Nemo and Montreal-based animation studio Sardine Productions. Treehouse, which debuts Manon this fall, is the 5th broadcaster in Canada to acquire the series, where it already airs on Radio-Canada, TFO, Knowledge Network and SCN. Manon is based on books written and illustrated by Gerard Moncomble and Nadine Rouviere. The series has also been acquired around the world by broadcasters such as Tiji (France, Disney (Latin America), Vme (US), TV2 (Norway) and Duna TV (Hungary). Manon is distributed by MICO in Japan, Mirax in Eastern Europe and Mediaway in Poland.
CCI Releasing signs new international broadcast deals for the family-aimed movie, Alice Upside Down. Picking up the rights to the film are Super Ecran (Canada), Disney Channel Germany, France, Italy and Japan, and Canal + (Poland) and TVI (Portugal). Additionally, Germany’s More Brands takes the home entertainment rights to the picture. The movie is based on the Alice book series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor.
Apparent Gravity Media (AGM) licenses its slate of action sports programming to Cartoon Network for its new weekly Saturday night (9p) one-hour action sports block that premiered over the weekend. The Cartoon Network block includes 10 Count, an extreme sports countdown series at 9p, and Re:Evolution of Sports, which looks at new challenges for extreme athletes. Upcoming editions of the action sports block will feature AMG’s Alli Presents, a new HD series that focuses on extreme sports and its top stars; and AWE, an up-close look at the world of action/extreme and adventures sports and its stars. Cartoon Network’s new action sports block airs Saturdays at 9p and repeats Sundays at noon.
Elsewhere, Apparent Gravity Media (AGM) will attend Sportel Monaco 2009 next week (October 12-15) where it will showcase its youth-targeted lifestyle programming including: The Alli Show (7×30 HD) which follows athletes in six different extreme sports pushing their sports to the next level; Free Flow Tour (3×30 HD) the amateur action sports competition, featuring highlights and stories of amateurs (Tweens/Teens 12-18) from the 2009 Summer FFT (skate and BMX) and 2009-10 Winter FFT (freeski and snowboard) as they make their way to the pros; The Stairsmasters & Fashion Jam (1×30 HD) a specialized snowboarding and lifestyle event featuring street riding through downtown Quebec City and top sinter fashions; The Very Best of Mavericks (1×60) explores the history of surfing, champions and incredible wins and wipe-outs.
MIPJUNIOR/MIPCOM
9 Story Entertainment pre-sells its new live-action movie, Harriet the Spy, to Disney Channel. Based on author Louise Fitzhugh’s 1964 classic book, Harriet the Spy, 9 Story will produce and distribute the movie, which will premiere on Disney Channels worldwide beginning in 2010. The co-production is the first of its kind for Disney Channel. 2 Friends Entertainment’s Nancy Steingard and Wendy Moss-Klein will also serve as Executive Producers on the movie.
In other news, 9 Story Entertainment is partnering with Just For Laughs to develop and co-produce Standup4Kidz (26×11, working title), a new kid-targeted standup comedy series based on a concept from Big Hug Productions. The mixed live-action and animated series will feature top comedians performing their cleanest/family-friendly comedy.
ABC TV Australia acquires the mystery series Kaitangata Twitch (13×30), which is produced in New Zealand. Based on the stories about the Maori culture by author Margaret Mahy, the series features a mix of live-action, CGI animation created by Animation Research. The cross-cultural tale is a personal one for Mahy, dealing with her family roots, her European New Zealand background and her part-Maori nephews and nieces as well as focusing on the environment, family and young people finding their identity. Kaitangata Twitch was commissioned by Maori Television and is supported by Te Mangai Paho (TMP) and NZOnAir. The deal was brokered by Canadian Lenz Entertainment, which holds the international distribution rights to the series.
Canadian animation house Cuppa Coffee Studios inks a distribution partnership with Bejuba! Entertainment. Under the deal, Bejuba will represent Cuppa Coffee’s kid/family-targeted properties including the 2D Flash-animated series Bruno (50×1) and its spin-off Bruno and the Banana Bunch (26×11), the 2D Flash-animated preschool music-based series Tigga and Togga (26×3), and the stop-motion animated A Very Barry Christmas (1×45) among others.
Canal Plus (France) inks a deal for CJ Entertainment‘s 3D HD animated kid-aimed series Bolts and Blip (26×30) for Paybox Canal Plus and its digi cable network Teletoon, per Variety. Bolts and Blip is co-produced by CJ Entertainment and Toronto-based ToonBox Entertainment.
PorchLight Entertainment‘s KidMango is on the ground in Cannes searching for new programming content (shorts, series and feature length) and additional distribution partners. KidMango recently added distribution through partnerships with Yahoo! Kids and Boxee, which will expand KidMango’s service to millions of potential new viewers. With its current library of 1500+ hours of programming, KidMango distributes content via three channels, online at KidMango.com (www.kidmango.com) in North America, through online syndication with the KidMango Content Network, and on-air through KidMangoTV, a programming block in partnership with PorchLight Entertainment and MyFamilyTV.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Lisa Marks Associates (LMA) grows its candy brand programs with several new retail deals:
- LMA continues to develop the Just Born (Peeps, Mike and Ike and Hot Tamales) licensing effort as it inks new deals with: Mighty Fine to create a line of Peeps knit tops, tees and fleece for men/women/girls/toddlers for specialty stores and Old Navy. The apparel items will be available from spring 2010; Garan to produce a range of Peeps, Mike and Ike and Hot Tamales boys and girls t-shirts exclusively for Wal Mart, available from spring 2010; and HYP is tapped to develop a line of Peeps and Mike and Ike socks for various retailers and junior t-shirts that will be available exclusively at Sears next spring.
- New deals for Dum Dum Pops include one with Jerry Leigh for a line of Girl 4-16 and junior apparel; HYP socks and junior tees, the latter exclusively for Sears in spring 2010.
- LMA teams Warheads (doesn’t your face just squish up thinking about them) with manufacturer Jel Sert to produce a line of Warheads freezer pops for early 2010.
- The Smarties candy brand licensing program gets two new apparel deals for spring 2010 with Garan creating boys and girls tees for Wal Mart, and HYP producing junior t-shirts for Sears, and socks for all retailers.
Aardman Rights finalizes a deal with Haynes Publishing, a publisher/distributor of books, manuals and DVDs, to produce a new Wallace & Gromit manual. With the first title set for release this fall, the book series will uncloak the inner workings of Wallace’s myriad of inventions/contraptions featured in the various TV series and films.
Classic Media grows its consumer products program for Where’s Waldo? with a new deal with TDC Games to create a range of jigsaw puzzles featuring images of Where’s Waldo. The new line, which includes 2,000-piece, 1,000-piece, 300-large piece puzzles, 234-piece world’s smallest) puzzle, 24-piece puzzles, and hide-and-seek figural games, some which include 3D elements, will rollout at retail from summer 2010 in the US and Canada.
Scholastic’s Weston Woods Studios releases two Scholastic Storybook Treasures home entertainment series this October 27:
- Treasury of 100 Storybook Classics a re-release that includes 100 classic stories (e.g. Where the Wild Things Are, Curious George, Corduroy) read by celebrity narrators (e.g. Meryl Streep, Sarah Jessica parker, Forest Whitaker) on 16 DVDs and also features Scholastic’s read-along function for each story. The release includes an activity book, 15 additional stories and Spanish and French versions of Where the Wild Things Are.
- Chicka Chicka Collection a 2-disc set featuring versions of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Chicka Chicka 123, which are based on Bill Martin, Jr.’s books and features animation of Lois Ehlert’s illustrations.
Factory Entertainment, manufacturer and distributor of entertainment collectibles, is awarded a worldwide license to produce a range of Beatles and Yellow Submarine die-cast collectible models by Caroline Mickler Ltd. on behalf of Apple Corps Ltd. Set to be available from 2010, the initial models in the range will be buses and taxis at different scales.

The preschool-targeted Shushybye Dream Band is set to perform its bedtime-themed music in Liverpool, England in Williams Square and at the Cavern Club on October 10 and 11 respectively, as part of the ongoing Sky Digital Switchover roadshow. The band is the star of the Shushybye Baby show, which airs daily on BabyFirstTV.
