Comcast‘s potential purchase of NBC Universal has analysts salivating over what the cable giant could bring to advertisers in terms of reach and addressable set-top-box-based services. The tie-up would give Comcast access to more than 45 million customers across TV, the web and phone services. Gaining more channels would help protect Comcast against the erosion of live viewing, notes AdAge, as well as position it against upcoming revenue sharing shifts that may involve the splitting of DVR rental fees with programmers.

NPR is planning a new journalism project with funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to develop in-depth, local coverage on national topics critical to local communities. The groups will provide $2 million and $1 million respectively, to organize a pilot group of local PBS and NPR stations to expand original reporting, to hire journalist bloggers to focus on issues important to their cities, and to curate, distribute and share online content about high-interest, specialized subjects. Stations will feed their work into NPR’s content management system, where each pilot participant will have access to each other’s work. Topics will include politics, the economy, healthcare, immigration and education.
Game software giant Electronic Arts and Twentieth Century Fox began setting up a CG-animated feature film version of Will (The Sims) Wright’s latest immersive video game Spore, reports Variety. Greg Erb and Jason Oremland (“The Princess and The Frog”) will write the script and Ice Age producer Blue Sky Studios will co-produce. Spore, which EA sold 1 million copies of last year during its first 3 weeks in release, was one of the first games to emphasize and incorporate user generated content, showcased in the Sporepedia compendium.

Twitter began testing a new feature called “Lists,” which allows users to subscribe to and share groups of users the follow with friends. The idea is to enable the sharing of curated sets of known twitterers.
Online family video producer KidMango struck new distribution partnerships with Yahoo! Kids and media software interface Boxee, increasing the potential audience for a range of shows from producers such as Millimages, Your Family Entertainment AG and Devine Entertainment. Weekly shows will be added to the Yahoo Kids lineup via kids.yahoo.com. The deal also includes the creation of Boxee’s first kid-targeted app, offering access to full episodes from KidMango.com, organized by age level.
Entertainment brand-targeted merchandise e-commerce platform Delivery Agent has raised $25 million to expand internationally and to extend its technology to serve “click-to-buy” applications for online video, mobile and set-top boxes. New investor Focus Ventures led the round, joined by T-Venture, Coral Group and Ironwood Capital and existing investors Bessemer Venture Partners, Worldview Technology Partners and Cardinal Venture Capital. The funding brings the company’s total investment to date to $60 million.

Mobile advertising platform AdMob signed an exclusive deal with iPhone App developer Tapulous to become the company’s exclusive display ad network. Tapulous became a high-profile developer with the success of the hugely popular music game Tap Tap Revenge, registering more than 15 million downloads across its catalog. Tapulous will work with AdMob to develop brand new ad units contoured specifically for mobile. The game publisher will also utilize AdMob to promote its upcoming titles.
Craigslist won a preliminary ruling against eBay as a Delaware court dismissed two of eBay’s claims against the online classified site for being “moot” and “speculative,” per Reuters. Five remaining claims are expected to be heard in an upcoming trial scheduled for December.
The U.S. ranks 15th in world in Broadband Quality, placing it in the “Comfortable enjoying today’s applications” category but out of the “Ready for tomorrow” ranking, according to the latest Cisco-sponsored study from the Univ. Of Oxford and the Univ. of Olivedo in Spain. The report claims that top ranking countries saw increased investments in fiber and cable network upgrades, coupled with competition diversity and supported by “strong government vision and policy.” South Korea, second only to Hong Kong and Luxembourg in Broadband Penetration, ranked #1 in terms of overall broadband quality, surpassing last year’s leader Japan with a 72% improvement in its Broadband Quality Score (BQS). Japan boasted the cities with highest BQS scores in the world, with Yokohama, Nagoya, Sapporo and Osaka all in the top 10. Sweden had the highest score among European nations.

The speed tests also measured future apps including high-quality video file sharing and streaming, high-definition IPTV and cinema-quality live event broadcasts.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski announced several new staff appointments at the agency:
- Catherine Seidel, Chief of the Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau, has been named Deputy Chief of the Wireline Competition Bureau
- John Branscombe, Chief of the Spectrum and Competition Policy Division, was also named Deputy Chief of the Wireless Competition Bureau
- Monica Desai, former Chief of the Media Bureau, has been named Deputy Chief of the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau
- Mark Stone, Deputy Managing Director of the FCC, has been named Deputy Chief of the Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau
Entertainment union specialist Jonathan Handel, a lawyer with TroyGould’s Entertainment, Sports and Media Department, has become an adjunct professor at the UCLA School of Law. He will teach a semester-long class on entertainment unions and guilds in January 2010 and will continue to represent clients at TroyGould.
Fox International Channels (FIC) upped two of its global content executives, Sharon Tal Yguado and Jason Simms, to SVP/Content Development and SVP/Global Acquisitions, respectively. Both will continue to oversee all aspects of global content across the FIC group. Sharon and her team work out of Los Angeles while Jason and his team are based in London.
Illeana Douglass, probably best known for her supporting roles in Scorsese movies such as Cape Fear and GoodFellas, has found new life as an online video star on EasytoAssemble.tv, the home for the award-winning web series she writes and produces for Ikea. (In the most recent episode, she explains that decided to do the “bad internet TV show” after her agent kept hounding her to do “bad TV movies for Lifetime,” trading a paycheck for control.) EasytoAssemble has become a model for the celebrity-infused web series because it strikes the perfect tone – it’s dry, understated and ironic, without taking itself too seriously. (It also doesn’t hurt when the producer has gifted actors like Kevin Pollack in their speed dial to call on as guest stars.) Web entertainment portal My Damn Channel has gotten into the Illena Douglass business this season producing Sparhusen, her new Spinal Tap homage co-created and co-starring Rob Mailhouse and Todd Spahr. MyDamn is hosting a premiere of the series on Wednesday night at the Egyptian Theater on Hollywood Boulevard that should be loads of fun.
