Cyn opsis: Kids!

10/02/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, October 2, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

It isn’t just the entertainment industry that is losing money from movie piracy according to a new research report, The True Cost of Motion Picture Piracy to the US Economy, issued by the Institute for Policy Innovation, a non-profit, non-partisan public policy think tank.  The report illustrates that the effects of movie piracy permeates beyond the confines of the entertainment industry and resulting in the loss of jobs, two-thirds of which are outside the industry, wages, and revenue. Major findings from The True Cost of Motion Picture Piracy to the US Economy:

  • $5.5 billion in lost annual earnings among US workers
  • 141,030 jobs lost
  • $837 million in lost annual tax revenue
  • $20.5 billion in lost annual output to all US industries

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Robert Downey Jr. will star as Marvel’s super hero Iron Man in the Marvel Studios’ feature film of the same name.  Slated to be released on May 2, 2008, the Iron Man project marks the first theatrical release to be produced independently by Marvel Entertainment.  Iron Man will be directed by Jon Favreau and distributed by Paramount.  The story follows billionaire industrialist and inventor, Tony Stark, who is kidnapped and forced to build a deadly weapon.  He then builds himself a high-tech suit of armor and escapes his captors and returns to the US where he must confront his past, and finds himself donning his armor to thwart the efforts of evil doers.

Mipcom Jr./Mipcom

PorchLight Entertainment will be at Mipcom with a collection of stop motion animated holiday/seasonal specials that live under the banner of Holidaze.  Co-created by Jonathan Prince, produced by Madison Road Entertainment, and animated by BixPix Entertainment, the first title under the Holidaze banner is The Christmas That Almost Didn’t Happen (1hr), which includes a gaggle of celebrity voice-overs.  Designed to look like the stop-motion holiday specials of the 1960s and ’70s, Holidaze features an ensemble of animated characters that will appear in each of the six specials.  PorchLight represents Holidaze in worldwide distribution (excluding the US) for TV, DVD and Licensing and Merchandising.  Madison Road will release this first special in the US beginning this November.  The Christmas That Almost Didn’t follows Rusty the Reindeer (Fred Savage), who has been demoted to a minor role in prepping for Christmas at the North Pole.  Frustrated by his lack of understanding about Christmas, Rusty leaves the North Pole to find the only support group of its kind for Holiday Icons, where Rusty meets: Albert, the perpetually nervous Thanksgiving Day Turkey (Harland Williams); Candie, the southern Easter Bunny (Gladys Knight); Mr. C, the grouchy Cupid (Paul Rodriguez); Trick and Treat; and the moody teen Halloween Ghosts (Emily Osment and Brenda Song).  The special also stars Santa (Fred Willard), Mrs. Claus (Edie McClurg), Kringle (John O’Hurley), and Kid (Dylan and Cole Sprouse).

Foothill Entertainment, Inc. and Malaysia’s Vision Animation have inked a production and distribution deal that will see Foothill distributing a range of programs and Vision will provide financing and will produce some Foothill properties.  Foothill will attend Mipcom as the exclusive worldwide distributor (excluding Asia) for five Vision Animation programs including:

  • Space Clowns – a new animated Sci-Fi/comedy series that follows the planet-hopping adventures of a group of intergalactic circus clowns who find themselves going up against the Evil Ringmaster.
  • Bubble Town Club – an underwater adventure series about the everyday life of the cute sea creatures from the South China Sea’s Coral Reef.
  • DigiSquad – the show follows Net, a computer whiz kid who unknowingly releases a destructive computer virus.  Net and his friends set out to fix the problem.
  • Microbe Patrol  a CGI animated series about four surgical soldiers who agree to be shrunk to a minuscule size in order to use quantum science to cure the world’s most deadly diseases.
  • Solar Ice – a fantasy/comedy/adventure about a pair of superhero twins, a guru and a group of monstrous villains, clashing in a surreal medieval setting.

Additionally, Foothill will also showcase the following properties at the market:

  • Snapper – a new pilot for an animal series set in the Amazon created by UK’s Phew!! and produced by Malaysia’s POV Studio.
  • Kid Guides – an educational series produced by Echo Entertainment
  • Milton the Monster – a cult favorite animated property produced by Hal Seeger
  • Rarg – produced by UK’s Collingwood-O’Hare
  • Dress Up Box – a live-action pre-school series from New Zealand’s Papageno Productions.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The Hatchery and My Gym Children’s Fitness Center have entered into a production, licensing and merchandising deal, under which The Hatchery will also provide strategic direction and manage licensing and merchandising opportunities for the My Gym brand.  Product lines will include DVDs, music CDs, publishing and TV and toys, with the first product resulting from the pact, Mymo’s Adventures, a mixed live-action/animation and interactive DVD-CD is available at My Gym Centers and on its website.  Additionally, The Hatchery is currently in working on a deal that will see a broader distribution of the DVD-CD as well as a full marketing effort.

THQ Inc. has released Unfabulous, a new game title for Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance in North America.  The game is based on the Nickelodeon series of the same name starring Emma Roberts, and marks the first game title to be released based on one of the network’s live-action TV series.  The Unfabulous game is rated E for everyone.

STONE SOUP
