10/23/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, October 23, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The CW has confirmed the full season pick up 7th Heaven and has also given the same shot of confidence to freshman sitcom The Game. The Game is produced by Happy Camper Productions and Grammnet Productions in association with CBS Paramount Network Television Inc.

Elsewhere, CBS has announced a full season order for its new series Shark. To date, the legal drama has averaged 14.36 million viewers and a 4.1/11 with A18-49 on Thursdays at 10p. Shark is produced by Imagine Television, in association with Twentieth Century Fox Television.

Tonight’s Premieres:
National Geographic Channel: Dog Whisperer at 9p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

The Military Channel will debut the new series My War Diary which recounts actual, first-hand experiences in the Middle East, with footage shot by American soldiers deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Premiering on November 10 at 9p, the Friday before Veteran’s Day, some of the individual video diaries depict battles and explosions, while others capture the down time and camaraderie between the soldiers and the visible emotional hardship that goes along with being far from home. A marathon of encore episodes of the series will be shown on Veteran’s Day, November 11. My War Diary is produced for Discovery Channel by LMNO Productions.

Lifetime will premiere its new original primetime drama Monarch Cove on November 4 with double episodes at 9 and 10p.  Monarch Cove stars Virginia Williams as Bianca Foster who returns to the seaside resort town after being falsely imprisoned for the murder of her father. The series also stars Rachel Ward and Shirley Jones among others. The series is produced by FremantleMedia North America.

Nick at Nite’s reality series competition, Funniest Mom in America will debut its third season starting April 3 at 930p. The six-part series has moms across the country vying for a $50,000 prize and a chance to host a special night on the network. The series follows twelve moms as they audition, then move on to regional competitions and finally advance to the semi-finals.

RHI has cut a deal with Sci Fi Channel to produce up to 10 monster films over the next two years, title which Sci Fi will have license to for a period of seven years.  According to Variety, RHI will maintain all home video, new media and VOD rights of the films. The upcoming titles include Blood Monkey, Eye of the Beast, Maneater and Grizzly Rage. While termed as being “low-budget monster films”, each title is expected to be produced with a budget exceeding the usual $2.2 million because of the additional rights RHI will maintain.

News Corporation is keeping a so-called “poison pill” provision in place for another three years. That provision, voted in at the media conglomerate’s annual meeting last Friday, is expected to fend off any hostile takeover attempt by John Malone, head of Liberty Media and arguably the media world’s canniest investor, who holds approximately 19% of News shares, compared with the 30% held by Rupert Murdoch’s family trust. The way is now open for a possible deal in which the Malone News stake is swapped for Murdoch’s interest in satellite broadcaster DirecTV, or for as-yet-unnamed News-owned TV stations, according to analysts and other observers. “If we can believe Liberty, we’re very close to closing a deal,” Murdoch said at the meeting, where the toughest questions came from culturally or politically conservative shareholders, who questioned Murdoch on everything from his views regarding Senator Hillary Clinton to the so-called “smutty, vulgar and violent” programming on Fox networks, to why BSkyB carries Al-Jazeera. A full report on the meeting, from regular contributor Louis Chunovic, is coming this Thursday, in the next edition of Cynopsis Weekender.

At the extraordinary age of 96, actress Jane Wyatt has died.  Most will remember her best as Margaret, the mother on Father Knows Best. a series for which she won the Best Actress in a Dramatic Series award on three occasions.  Trekkies also know she played Mr. Spock’s mother in the original series as well as in the film Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.  Wyatt also appeared in numerous films, including Gentlemen’s Agreement with Gregory Peck and My Blue Heaven with Betty Grable and Dan Dailey.  She died peacefully in her sleep and leaves behind three sons, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
