Cynopsis: Kids!

10/20/08

Good morning. It’s Monday, October 20, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Chapman Entertainment entered into a partnership at Mipcom Junior last week with Pukeko Pictures to produce a CGI animated action series based on its new property, tentatively titled Trooper Tom (26×22).  Targeted to K6-12, Trooper Tom revolves around a futuristic Pinocchio, an experimental android infused with human DNA.  Pukeko Pictures is a new kid’s TV endeavor from New Zealand’s Weta Workshop.

In a pre-emptive move, Walden Media acquires a screenplay titled Tough Cookies by sisters Carley and Chelsea Steiner, per Variety.  The plot follows what happens when a judge orders  “deadbeat dad” and his daughter’s friends to start a troop of their own, and the unique methods they employ to compete against a troop of snotty popular girls to win a competition.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Atlantyca Entertainment inks a license deal with Random House Children’s Books in the US for the English-language translation rights to Italian publisher Edizioni Piemme’s four-book series, Century, by author Pierdomenico Baccalario.  The Century series follows the story of four young kids who, according to a prophecy, are selected for a special mysterious mission that will settle a pact between man and nature.  The books were acquired by Jim Thomas, Editorial Director, Random House Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books.  The first title in the series is set to publish in North America in fall 2009.

Jakks Pacific Inc. acquires the kid’s product businesses of Hong Kong-based Tollytots Ltd, and Westborough, MA-based Kids Only, Inc. and its Hong Kong affiliate Kids Only, Ltd. The acquired businesses include licenses for well-known character and brand licenses, and their kid’s product lines.

Animatus Studio recently completed work on Help Mikey Make It Out, an interactive animation in collaboration with www.homefiredrill.org.  The project is designed to help educate kids about what to do when a smoke alarm goes off.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The food chain Del Taco celebrates Halloween by including Edgar & Ellen in its Kids Loco Meal.  Edgar & Ellen and their hairy-eyeball pet, Pet, will be featured on toys and point-of-sale materials at 500+ Del Taco restaurants this month.  The premiums include an Edgar & Ellen themed puzzle, a concentration card game, door hangers and a Pet mini-plush (www.deltaco.com/page5.html).

AL Ovadia & Associates is appointed by KJG Ltd to handle licensing and merchandising rights for Absolutely Cuckoo Ltd‘s Love & Stuff and The Greetlings brands across North America.  Additionally, Al Ovadia & Associates will handle licensing rights to Zoo Zoo.  This follows KJG’s recently completed deal with Empire Multimedia to handle the licensing and merchandising rights for five of Absolutely Cuckoo’s properties in the Far East
