Cynopsis: Kids!
10/15/07
Good morning. It’s Monday, October 15, 2007, and this is your first early morning, back on terra firma in the good old USA.
BBC Global Channels will launch CBeebies, BBC Knowledge and BBC Lifestyle channels in Hong Kong IPTV’s, now TV, on Wednesday, October 17, 2007. The move marks the first time that CBeebies will be available in North Asia. Targeted to preschoolers, CBeebies became available for the first time via BBC Entertainment in India this past May 2007. Together CBeebies, BBC Knowledge and BBC Lifestyle will make up a portion of The BBC 5, an exclusive pack for PCCW’s now TV, which counts 850,000+ subscribers. CBeebies will feature programming such as Teletubbies and The Roly Mo Show, with Phui Fran lee, as a presenter.
Michael Eisner’s The Torante Company and Madison Dearborn Partners completed the acquisition of The Topps Co., the trading card company, at the end of last week for an aggregate price tag of about $385 million. Founded in 1938, The Topps Co. sale has been in play for some time, with several dissident members of the Topps board of directors vocally fighting against the deal, believing the sale price undervalued the company’s worth. Earlier this year as Topps prepared for a shareholder vote, rival trading card company Upper Deck through its stick of gum into the ring to purchase Topps of with an unsolicited offer of some $420+ million, but ultimately retracted that offer.
FAO Schwarz returns to Chicago, but not with its own storefront. Instead, FAO Schwarz will offer its specialty toys, plush and other products in an in-store shop in Macy’s, at the State Street location, better known to most as the former home of the flagship Marshall Field’s store, from November 1, 2007. While I agree with FAO Schwarz CEO Ed Schmults that Chicago is a “perfect city for this expansion,” it will be interesting to see how the shop does given the current negative feelings that many Chicagoans have towards Federated Department Stores. FAO Schwarz is stepping into the middle of a bitter fight between Chicagoans (and others who adore Marshall Field’s) and Federated, which owns Macy’s and acquired Marshall Field’s in summer 2005. Shortly thereafter the decision came down to re-brand the Field’s stores a Macy’s, and since then there have been constant protests, boycotts and lawsuits against Federated.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Family Friendly Films, LLC is heading into production on a CGI animated short titled, Zea Zoo and the Land of Boo: An Urban Fairy Tale. The story follows a young boy caught in Hurricane Katrina, who finds himself in a magical land after almost drowning. Based on the kid’s poem, which was featured as an e-book of the same name, the property is aimed at urban kids/families, a market Family Friendly believes to be an underserved one. Produced by Family Friendly Films, LLC, Family Film Animations Studio and Blackmon Entertainment, equity and distribution partners are currently being sought. Women in Films (West Coast) and Universal Studios are sponsoring VIP screenings of the short. ( www.landofboo.com or www.zeazooandthelandofboo.com.
If one isn’t born with greatness, then certainly it is cast upon them or in the case of the new Warner Bros movie Justice League, director George Miller is doing just that. He is casting the roles of the superheroes yesterday and today, bringing in some 35-40 actors/actresses, per the Hollywood Reporter. Those who have been asked to come in and audition for Miller include, Adam Brody (The O.C.), Joseph Cross (Running With Scissors0, D.J. Cotrona (Windfall), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Grindhouse), Michael Angarano (Sky High) and others.
MORE KIDS STUFF
DQ Entertainment Ltd., the Indian-based animation and gaming company, enters into a partnership with America Greetings Properties (AGP), Classic Media, Taffy Entertainment and MoonScoop for three animated projects, which are in different stages of development:
- Twisted Whiskers, CGI series to include 9×30 second mobile shorts and 26×30 episodes. The series revolves around squash and squish cats and dogs.
- Maryoku Yummy (52×11), the previously announced AGP animated property is a co-production. Created by AGP’s super Studio Chief, Jeffrey Conrad, the preschool-targeted series revolves around Maryoku, a Yummy, who lives in a world where all wishes go.
- Casper’s Scare School, a 3D animated series in which Casper continues his efforts to be a scary ghoul.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Scholastic is heading back to the presses for the second printing of the US edition of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (780+ pages), the seventh and final book in the J.K. Rowling series. Like the first US printing, which included 12 million copies, the second round will be published on “environmentally-friendly paper” composed of 30% post-consumer content and pulp from Fraser Papers. HP7 had its initial release on July 21, 2007.
Sierra Entertainment is supporting the release of its new videogame The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night, with a Wendy’s Kids’ Meal promotion. The four-week promotion runs through the end of this month and features a premium character from the new game in Kid’s Meal bag, including Sparx Flyer, Flapping Spyro, a Spyro Keychain, Spyro Checkers and Ruby Reveal. Additionally, the promotion includes a $5 off coupon from GameStop for any platform of The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night. The newest chapter of the Spyro franchise, which includes a Spyro game trilogy, The Eternal Night carries an ESRB rating of “E” for Everyone, and is available for PlayStation 2, Wii, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo DS, with a mobile phone version available in early November.
Charles in Charge of our days and our nights …
Fans of the Charles in Charge will want to get ready to lineup for the 3-disc DVD box set (26 episodes) release of Season 2 of the 1980s sitcom set for release on November 20, 2007, from Arts Alliance America. The series starred dream teens (well then anyhow) Scott Baio and Willie Aames. Arts Alliance America will launch a marketing campaign including a 30 second spot that will run on cable networks including VH1 and TV Land among others, a viral internet promotion, and print ads, as well as websites of cast members. Charles in Charge also starred Ellen Travolta, Nicole Eggert, and James T. Callahan.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: What was the name of the New York based popular children’s TV show that featured segments such as Snake Cans, Good News, a whopping round of Simon Sez, and all with Sonny Fox at the helm? WONDERAMA (small bit of trivia – Cynthia Turner was in a commercial for Wonderama when she was about 9. Sonny Fox rejected the commercials because he considered Cynthia and her brothers and sisters the ‘ugliest kids he’d ever seen’! LOL) Kudos to: Emily Brenner-HarperCollins Children’s Books/NY; Norma Rosenthal-Berenter Greenhouse & Webster/NY; Barry Solomon-Menudo Entertainment LLC/NY; Howard Leib-BrainCamp/NY; Stefanie Tier Friedman-Top Tier Licensing/Agoura Hills, CA; Rich Ross-Disney Channel/ San Francisco; Andy Kirk-TVN Entertainment/ Burbank; Grace Benn/LA; Jeffrey Alan Schechter-TotallyWrite/Toronto
Today’s Trivia Question: On the classic TV show, My Three Sons, Steve Douglas remarried later in the series and had a step daughter, what name did she go by? ( Click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
